"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Christian, I can't see the makers name, who made that? Really nice looking, looks like a great user too!

Thanks, the maker is Stuart Branson. As to whether or not it's a great user, I hope to never find out. This knife was designed to be a weapon, not a tool. It isn't overbuilt like most "bowies" you see today. Instead it is nimble and quick. It's a bit scary actually. Handling it gives me the shivers sometimes. An appropriate choice for a bedside blade.

That sounds great Mark. What knives are you going to send with them?

Instead of lending them each a knife, it might be time to get them one of their own so that they can start making proper memories with them. An Opinel would be perfect for the task.

- Christian

Well, both of them actually want Vic Classics. But my plan is to give them a couple loaners to take to camp (Gerber LST for the girl, Opinel no. 6 for the boy). That way I can hold out the carrot of getting a knife of their own as a reward for taking care of the loaner and not cutting themselves. This plan was hatched with the input of my reluctant wife, who's not all that into the idea. :D But to her credit, she's letting me handle this part, while she shops for sleeping bags, flashlights, bug spray and so on.

That's a great pic Christian, looks like you've got all the bases covered ;)

Thanks Jack. I also keep a gladius and khukuri nearby. What can I say other than I like my sharps? :D

Robert, what a bummer!
But, on the plus side, you get to show off how nice your guard-to-blade solder joint was. ;)

haha heres some more pics, i have images start to finish...I was impressed with my joint.

I am going to take the next bowie project to the next level and instead of re-purposing a blade I can go start to finish.

RIP tony soprano. James Gandolfini died of a heart attack in Italy.

Aww, that's sad news :(

Nice to see your name added to your signature Dan. I'm a stickler for etiquette, and so try to only use people's first names in posts where that is the case, or where they've signed their posts, as I know some people prefer to keep their real names to themselves. But your Member name has always been a bit of a mouthful! :D

RIP tony soprano. James Gandolfini died of a heart attack in Italy.

Oh man, that's a huge bummer. Loved his acting. He was also a active member of the NYC vespa riders club, like Robert Denero. Only a few years ago, James was knocked off his Vespa by a NYC taxi.

We'll miss ya, Tony!

I found out about it while I was driving home from the docs office, where I found out my BP was 170/100! All I did was miss one mornings medications. Somewhat skeered fat people dontcha know?

Almost drive ya to drink, ya know!

Sad to hear about that. Wasn't a follow of the show, but did catch a few episodes.

RIP

I want to confess and apologies folks.
I was a bit naughty earlier today and made a glib remark about having a liver biopsy today. Apologies if I caused any undue concern.

Have been in hospital to be tested for what could be 'autoimmune disorder', a non-contagious form of hepatitis (inflammation of the liver) that sees my body attacking this area for some reason. The biopsy is the way to confirm/deny this, plus the degree of damage it may have caused aka. cirrhosis.

It's treatable, that's the main thing. The biopsy procedure itself is more unpleasant than than the disorder. There's is a potential of internal damage or bleeding, so I have been laying on my back for hours today, under obs in the hospital. But finally discharged and back home.

They did it under a local, which is pretty unpleasant. The needle is about a foot long. It hurts....and it didn't grab enough the first time around so they had to take a second stab at it.
Now it feels and looks like I've had a good hoofing, and pretty much uncomfortable in all positions bar laying down flat.

Results in two weeks.

So again, apologies for not mentioning it sooner, and being so aloof before. I didn't wanna think about it too much. And it feels trivial to complain where some others here have had greater health issues than my own, in their lives or their beloved's.

I'll be sure to let you now how it goes and not be a martyr.

Thanks to those of you who messaged.

Glad to hear you're back home now Thom, and hope the test results are good. Sounds like a rotten day, and if you're not a martyr, I bet you look like a rotten tomato!

Hope to see you soon pal

Apologies accepted.

Whew.

All kidding aside, thanks for the update, and I'm sorry for the rough go. I'm glad that the prognosis is (guardedly) good, whatever the results. I couldn't think of anything less than dire that would prompt such testing. Not that your condition isn't serious, by any means.

This, I entirely understand. My own approach to illness is similar to a dog's: find a bush to crawl under, crawl back out again if I live.

I'll be sure to let you now how it goes and not be a martyr.

Thanks, please do.

Good luck to you Thom.

Dude! That does NOT sound like any fun.
At least it is treatable.
Holding a good thought that it is VERY treatable.
