"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Must have been a great day, Brian... I´ve never done this kind of shooting before but it might be fun with a pump gun (in Germany the correct term of this type of gun is "Vorderschaftrepetierflinte" - JFYI) - In Germany guys that do this sport use usually a double-barrell-shotgun. 120 at first time sound really much ;) but the more the bigger the fun, it seems :D

I´m no hunter nor a sporting-shooter, but I sometimes go to a fire range and shoot classic military rifles like Mauser K98 (8x57JS) or Carl Gustav Swedish-Mauser (6.5x55) or sometimes a lever-repeating-rifle (Unterhebelrepetierbüchse) in .30-06Springfield

HEY! DID EVERYONE FALL ASLEEP IN HERE?!?

No posts in nearly two days? I guess we're all having a slow speed summer. Katie and I are counting down the days until the Great Eastern Rendezvous (well, I am, anyway), and trying to stay cool. This humidity and 95 degree weather is awful. We both work at places with no AC, so by the time we get home we're just totally wiped out.

Hope you're all keeping cool!

And as long as I'm rambling on, here's a neat photo I snapped yesterday. I saw what I thought at first was a leaf on the bumper of a 1963 Corvair that's in our bodyshop. Upon closer inspection, I saw this moth:

I have no idea what kind it is (Chevrolet moth? ;) ), but it certainly was beautiful. It just sat there for about 5 minutes or so and then fluttered on out the open bay door. Neat. :)

That's awesome Dan. I could look at photos of insects all day, they are way too interesting :)

You know what the best thing is about living near a lake? Nobody cares about all the beatiful places which aren't directly at the lake...
I moved here just two weeks ago and was checking out the new surroundings this Saturday afternoon. Took the bicycle and drove around the lake, but it was incredibly crowded. Cyclists, people with roller skates, on foot, no quiet place around. So I went a bit away from the lake, not further than 1 km, and sat down beneath an oak.

I sat there for 2 hours whittling, and the only humans I saw was a girl on a horse and an elderly woman walking by. People are weird :)
Turns out this is just 5 minutes away from my flat :D

Enjoy your weekend everyone

I know that phenomenon. There's a little lake by our house, and the paved path around it is often crowded to the point where it's no fun to walk there. But five minutes walk up the creek bank that feeds into it, and we find seclusion.

Here's Pearl the wonder corgi laying on the bank watching the stream for who knows what, while I sit under a tree whittling.

Here is a little creek I discovered down in Tennessee. It was a great place to sit and ponder.

cant find the quote but i read somewhere that something like 75% of the people never go more than like 100 yards from the parking lot at any attraction or natural area. my experience certainly supports this.

I think everyone was reeling from Andi's post regarding German firearm names. I still can't figure out how to say them. ;)

I miss having a forest 1/4 mile north of my house. People need places to ponder.

LOL... I don´t hope you do that.. though I would be very curious about the results that show up... ;)

Great photo Fes!:thumbup::thumbup:

Caption should read; A rare photo of the mysterious bushman. No body knows who he is, he only appears when someone needs help, then vanishes.
:D

SCARY bicycle ride today, guys. Three of us were riding on a rocky, very narrow trail with about a 3-meter drop down to the river. Long story short: One of my buddies fell head over heels, breaking his collar bone and -- they think -- a couple of ribs. EMTs had to come via boat and take him up river, as the area we were in is inaccessible by car. It's no exaggeration to say that his helmet probably saved his life. My other buddy and I were able to retrieve his bike and walk it about two miles to a boat crossing that took us across the river, where we caught a train and came on back home. Now I have to jump in the car and go walk his dog for him, and bring him some stuff to the hospital. If you're riding, don't forget that helmet!

Mark,
I just hope your friend will get better soon. A friend of mine, years ago, had a close encounter with a tree while he was riding downhill (he's been into dangerous things since he was a teenager) and the helmet saved his life. Not his teeth and nose unfortunately.

I heard they're looking for an actor for a new movie called "the lone bushman" :D

Kris,
wonderful picture and landscape. Someday I will travel to the Northwest and fill my eyes with such beautiful places.

I'm back home after my holidays. The last two days were a bit hard; the kid of the family I was staying at got sick with a serious infection. He seems to be getting better now, so everything is fine. I did enjoy my trip to southern FL quite much: the weather wasn't good, and didn't let me do all the things I wanted to do, but I've learned never to plan my trips too strictly a long time ago (due to a desert storm in the south of the Sahara desert). I also got my new custom slipjoint, and that's one of the highlights of the trip :)
Time to get back to my beaches though (I will be working but I will find some time to get there from now on... :p)

Out of a maximum of five thumbs up, I'll rate that as a six. Being a lifelong motorcyclist and now Vespa motor scooter rider, I've known more than a few people who had grave or fatal injuries from accidents. And the head injury was the only serious injury to their bodies. In one case, a guy was pulling into a gas station and was literaly going a walking pace, and his front wheel of his Triumph skipped out and he and his girl friend who was on the back, fell over. She got up with a skinned elbow, and he was just laying there. She kicked him and yelled "Stop screwing around, Donny." Donny was dead from his head hitting the pavement. Just a 5 mph drop sideways.

I never kick over my Vespa without fastening my helmet.

Carl.

Great pics guys

Mark, hope your friend gets better soon.

Shocking story Carl. I once came off MY Triumph many years ago, can't have been doing more than 10MPH as I was just setting off. I went over the handle-bars and was launched towards a wall, hitting it head-first. Because of my helmet, apart from minor scrapes and bruising to my legs, I was uninjured, and was more concerned about the damage to my bike at the time!

My posts have been thin and sporadic recently, this weekend has been the Hebridean Celtic Music Festival (HebCelt) in Stornoway Castle grounds and the whole Island has been heaving with tourists and drunken eejits. It's been great! A really good atmosphere and very little trouble considering. This festival is a family affair and its always full of kids and people of all ages enjoying the eclectic mix of music and the real ale! If any of you like such things, make sure you visit next year.

For my part, I have worked 42 hours in three days and I'm back in work again, feeling a tad weary now. I'm very jealous of you all zipping out into your quiet spots for some R&R and the photos look fantastic!

Dan the heat here is about 80-85 degrees and that's about as hot as I can physically handle (we Scots don't do hot), I'm not at all jealous of your own climate!

Have fun everyone, happy Sunday!

Paul
