"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Just had a couple of pints with my Godaughter and her dad at what The Guiness Book of World Records recognises as Britain's oldest pub. Don't know if that's right, but it's certainly pretty old!

Bit of blurb from The Bingley Arms website:

Situated in picturesque Bardsey in north Leeds, The Bingley Arms is no ordinary English pub. Set against a leafy backdrop, well away from busy roads and with the sound of a gentle stream trickling close by, the pub is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest in Britain.

The Bingley Arms, or The Priests Inn as it was called hundreds of years ago, has a known history that dates back as far as 953AD when Samson Ellis brewed in the central part of the building. However, evidence suggests that it might even date back to 905AD and was standing before All Hallows Church, just a few yards away, was built in 950AD.

The Priests Inn was a popular spot for travelling monks to rest. The inn was on a main route between Kirkstall Abbey and the Abbey at St Mary’s in York so monks would take a break before continuing on the journey to York. The rest house was later used by stagecoach passengers for a meal, with the adjoining buildings being used as stables for weary horses.

From around 1000AD a local court was held at The Priests Inn with offenders being taken to the pillory across the road, opposite the church.

Inside the chimney, in the main part of the building, are two priest holes dating back to 1539AD. Here Catholic priests hid for safety following the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII. Such priest holes are not rare, but it’s uncommon to find two in the same place.

During alterations to the building in the 1700s a fine stone inglenook fireplace was revealed. It takes pride of place in the tap room next to a fully-functioning Dutch oven for making bread – one of the few to still be in its original position in England.

In 1780 the Inn was renamed and came to be known by its name today, the Bingley Arms, after it was taken over by Lord Bingley.

With such a rich history it’s no wonder that The Bingley Arms has had its fair share of spooky goings-on over the years. Objects have moved or disappeared, pans of water have boiled on stoves which weren’t on and candles have lit on their own.

Several ghosts have also been spotted at the pub. A cavalier, known as a practical joker with a great sense of humour, has been seen by staff dressed in fine clothes with a large hat, a young girl is said to have been responsible for strange activity and a mysterious dog has been seen walking around by visitors.

The Bingley Arms boasts history like no other pub in Yorkshire or even England. Come and experience it for yourself.

I thought Jenny Watts in Bangor N.Ireland was the oldest.... I've been led astray by actual Guinness I think.

Kevin, Prayers sent for your grandfather. My condolences to you and your family.

Kevin, I am sorry to hear of your grandfather's passing.
May the knife always bring good memories to you.

Yeah, I always thought it was the Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham. I guess they keep finding Ye Olde pubs! :D

Thanks guys and gals, it means a lot from this group as you all know me well and even supported us along through past hardships.

Alright Ladies & Gentlemen,

I need to tell you some news from my own personal side... Some of you guys & gals almost know it, but now I think the time has come to tell.

We (my wife and I) will have a baby in a couple of months.

I´m really very excited and I think this will be the greatest challenge in my life I´ve handled until now. But I´m propably the happiest man on Earth. :) :)

Haha! Good news Buddy! I wish you and your wife the best of luck in this new journey. :)

Kevin,
thank you for bothering to answer my email in such a hard moment. I appreciated it.

So...
A bit of chronicles of my days in southern FL. There are two things I'd like to relate about.
One is my visit at a Bass Pro shop. I had heard about these shops before but had never visited one. I can't relate much about prices and stuff, since I visited it more or less like a park attraction, but it's quite a nice shop to walk in. I understand why many American folks love these shops. Unfortunately, the knife section was poorer than I hoped for (instead, the firearm section was way bigger than I expected). They had some selection on modern folders, not so much on slipjoints; a couple dozen of Case knives, divided in 2 or 3 handle materials, but with a "bad" choice of patterns, at least for my taste. I had the choice to pick a "free" (for me) knife, and I was thinking about a Buck 30x series, but the only one I found there was a full size stockman with the reddish handles that didn't appeal to me, so in the end I picked a Victorinox Classic SD, put it on my "tool-ring", and I walked happy :-) in the end, I liked the shop, although I didn't spend much time there.
I have to say I enjoyed my stay in Hollywood beach. The weather was awful (rain and clouds), but the atmosphere was very relaxed; lots of people walking/cycling/jogging up and down the beachwalk, and a very nice feeling of being in a laidback holiday spot, which I enjoyed. To be added, an awesome meat dinner at an Argentinian place in downtown Hollywood, and a minute of fun when a man who was cycling there (I guess around 65 to 70 y.o. and some resemblance to our good Carl) spotted us (5 adults and two kids) cycling on one of those "family bicycle" (for lack of a proper name), and smiled at us saying "that looks alot like the US government: two workers and five supervisors" :D

Fausto

I surely have accepted all of the kind words and thanks again so much.

Fausto, any time and always my friend! Sometimes I get busy but I'm not going anywhere :)
