"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Jack, that looks lie a good score....a traditional frontier knife if ever there was.

Regarding those Slavery items; I wouldn't have known thats what they were for without you sayin, and assumed them a riding crop and ye olde handcuffs. Very interesting to see, but I can certainly understand why you were taken aback by them. Was this over Harrogate way?

Thanks Thom, I've had some interesting stuff this past week. Got a J Gregory & Sons 'The Incorrodible' baker's knife in "Spanish silver' too if you'd like it.

I saw the slavery paraphenalia in Huddersfield market, and like yourself, I at first didn't think the items were connected. I noticed the shackles first, and assumed they were from some old police station or jail. I was a bit shocked when the bloke behind the stall started telling me about them, and showing me the various unpleasant details. I dare say he'll be there next Saturday with them. Personally, I think they should be in a museum rather than on some market stall next to old toy cars and whatever else he had up for sale.

Well, of certainly be interested in taking a look yes....especially since you've been 'poaching' again! :p (I thought as much from your Grove picture. Did you check out the Hand Drawn Monkey's expansion?).

Not pleased to hear this paraphernalia was to be found on my doorstep. And slightly surprised they were selling it due to our towns large Caribbean community.

That said, I imagine those cuffs would be interesting to look at, in terms of how they were made and work.

I knew you'd say that ('poaching')! :D I'm getting better stuff elsewhere at the moment my friend! ;) I like Huddesrfield market, but it tends to be pricey for any slipjoints on sale, I don't know why. There were a lot of repro Nazi daggers on sale and not much else, though I did get an old Sheffield-made fake SAK and a small Richards - probably got overcharged for them both too!

I thought the 'Hand Drawn Monkey' extension looked a bomb-site! They really haven't made an effort with it at all. They'd be better turning it into a toilet, since the solitary existing facility was out of order, which is appalling in a town centre bar on a Saturday night. We were intending to eat there, but decided to just have a quick drink and leave. I ended up cooking! :grumpy:

'The Grove' was very quiet, but pleasant as always. That was a Magic Rock beer called 'The Juggler' in the pic.

Well, you always seem to do it when I'm out of town!

It is too pricey most of the time. Oh yes, Nazi knife man is always there.....on the odd occasion he has something more tasteful on offer its always about ten times what you'd expect to pay.

The HDM looks like a student common room in a run down college. I'm hoping its work in progress!
Indeed, the absence of better facilities is a problem.

I'm sure you found the ale enjoyable. Black, hoppy, saison.... :barf:

Got home from Whitburn to find my brother had a mash on, our Oakwood bitter.
That should be good. Found two of the last brewing that slipped us by, so we enjoyed them post mash, as is our tradtion.

Its high time we got the beer reserves replenished!

I'm trying to put a list together of some traditionals I might give a try in the future but I need some help on some suggestions...
Lately I've been carrying two jack knives mostly, and old Case 1972 6202 1/2 jack knife with a clip and pen blade and a Ka-Bar 1026, also with large clip and shorter pen blade.
I've been really enjoying them and I'd like something similar. So in short, I'm looking for something that is:

-Not too large (approx. the sizes of the Case 6202 1/2 and the Ka-Bar 1026)
-Don't mind about the steel, as long as it works OK. I do like carbon blades, but it's not a necessity.
-Clip main blade
-Pen OR sheepsfoot/wharnie secondary blade
-Both ends with or without bolsters, that doesn't matter. I woudln't want a very broad swell end as in Barlows, I'd like to keep it slim.
-Delrin, bone, wood,... handle scale material doesn't matter.

Any suggestions of model numbers, brands,...? Every opinion is welcome :)
I've been thinking about a peanut, but I'm not sure if that is what I'm looking for. Could be though. I like to try out different brands, so no need to be restricted with case/ka-bar/whatevs.

Thanks in advance guys ;)

I think you might be after a GEC #66 jack. 3,5" closed, clip main, pen secondary, 1095 steel, few handle options, a very very nice knife overall, and a very comfortable frame as well.

Fausto

Good shout Fausto. I think something on the #68 frame might be suitable too.

I'd be willing to post over my Northfield White Owl for you to try out if you'd like?

I don´t want to derail your discussion about knives here on BFC ;)

But I´d like to share a music video. It´s a great song in austrian dialect, somehow in this way we use to talk... a little different :D

Enjoy the video - the band is called STS and the track is "Fürstenfeld".

I seemed to have acquired a nasty obsessive habit: checking my knives for sharpness and obsessively sharpening. I'll find myself pulling out my knife in a moment of down time and cutting up a piece of copy paper, and if the blade doesn't quite glide through like I want, out comes the coffee cup to do some touch up. Does anybody else have this problem, or do I just have too much time on my hands? haha

I change EDCs frequently, and every time I pick up a different one I check the edge, and usually strop. They gotta be sharp!

Very cool Kris. People talk about the print world going the way of the dinosaur. I can check FB and forums on my iPhone, but I can't read books or magazines on them. I need the real deal. Nothing better than a used book store, except for maybe an old knife shop.

I don't have any old knifeshops nearby, or a smartphone or Facebook, but I agree 100% about the used book store. Ones that are disorganized are annoying in one way, but better in another, forces me to stick around longer looking through everything:) Musty old paper, great smell. PDF's lack that musty smell.

... But then I start fretting about wether I'm over sharpening them and they'll waste away. I think to myself, is there less blade than a year ago?
