"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Here is a new sheath that my friend Paul Long made for me for a Bob Crowder fixed that I picked up a few weeks ago. 1 day turnaround is mighty impressive for Sheathmaker, thanks again Paul. Gator inlay.

... But then I start fretting about wether I'm over sharpening them and they'll waste away. I think to myself, is there less blade than a year ago?

lol
the great thing about having a bunch of rotating carry knives is that no one specimen actually gets all that much sharpening, really, when you think about it.
i dont have a strop but reading about it here leads me to think that they remove a really miniscule amount of metal. if that is going to wear down a blade then i say bring it on!

If you don't sharpen them how will they ever get that well-worn look?

Beautiful work Kris

Kris,
beautiful sheath and knife you got there :)

Personally, I'm not that obsessive about the sharpness of my knives. I try to keep them sharp (as much as my limited skill allows me to), but I don't check them that often.
It's been a month since I came back home from my holidays, so I thought I would share some pictures ;)

I think you might be after a GEC #66 jack. 3,5" closed, clip main, pen secondary, 1095 steel, few handle options, a very very nice knife overall, and a very comfortable frame as well.

Hmm, 1095, 3.5in that sounds about right, different handle materials. Very nice indeed! I might have to save up for that though. Just wondering, is it just the pics or is the blade on the 66 rather broad from edge to spine? I'll add it to the list.

Good shout Fausto. I think something on the #68 frame might be suitable too.

I'd be willing to post over my Northfield White Owl for you to try out if you'd like?

Wow, that's a very nice offer so thanks in advance! I've been googling it and I see that the blades are on opposite sides. Even though that would make a nice blade for sure, that's not what I'm after at the moment. I really prefer the esthetics of the blades being on one side. Thanks a lot for the offer though, that's much appreciated!

If anyone else has any suggestions, please do so! I seek to expand my range of options. I'm ok with outsourced, overseas made blades as well. Vintage, discontinued. or old blades are also welcomed since they sometimes pop up on auction sites.

I don't know...it's not as slender as other clip blades (like the clip on the GEC #48, or on Canal Street knives) but it doesn't look too broad to me.
Queen produces a similar model as well (I don't recall the name, but you can take a look at it online - Mike Latham has one for sale at www.collectorknives.net), and if I'm not mistaken, our "grumpy old mod" owns one :p

No problem at all. I wish I could offer you a Pony Jack, because it seems just like what you are looking for. I thought with the White Owl being on the same frame it might be interesting to get to know the size.

Best of luck hunting something down anyway.

Thanks again for the help! I'll look into it.

Thanks for understanding. I really think that it would feel different and turn me off. The frame wouldn't handle the same way since your opening motions are different.
I must admit, that 68 pony jack does look really great. What are the most prominent bladeforums supported dealers where I could get GEC knives? It would have to be someone/someplace that ships overseas since I live in europe...

I'll keep looking. Thanks guys!

Examples on my list:

-Peanut (Case, Camillus,...)
-GEC 66/68 pony jack
-Schrade OT (there seem to be quite a few Jacks in their line-up, plenty of old ones in good condition up for auction).

Yes, you are quite right. The single spring, orientation of the blades and bail. It is a different knife.

Kris - That sheath is a cracking work, especially for a such a speedy turnaround! I love the texturing of the main body, really goes well with the gator.

Fausto - Looks like you visited a real paradise there.

Thanks Duane :) Watching the video with a cold one is always a good choice.

I really like this song. They are not really known in Germany but very well known in Austria. (I could post more videos if you want to watch them.)

Ill watch them! You could PM them as well so they are easier to find;)

One more picture from my holidays (this one after a bit of photo processing - the original one was quite overexposed):
