"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Sounds like a perfect day to me. Reminded me of the times dad used to take me out on Tennessee back roads to teach me to drive. I still remember the first time he got me to drive with the whole family in the car. Highway 64 through east TN into North Carolina. Nice winding mountain highway. Almost 40 years later Dad still is a brave soul. Patient too. :)

Gus,

I am glad your doing well , as I am sure your dog's are also:thumbup:. They do look happy with foolish grins on their faces, as Charlie would say.

I remember My Dad teaching me to drive a stick in his 1966 Dodge pickup(really an ugly truck, imo!) and he made me so dang nervous. I was stopped at the four corners in the town I grew up, waiting for the light to turn green. I of course was so nervous I forgot to put the truck back in first gear. The light turned green, let the clutch out, and somehow was able to get her going in high gear without snubbing it(but not without plenty of jerking, over revving and clutch slipping). My dad just looked at me and shook his head:eek: I ended up with that truck as my first vehicle a few months later, and somehow it went from butt ugly to the coolest thing on four wheels!:D

Been a great day.

Went for a walk! First time since mid December that I have been able to do it without a decent amount of discomfort. Blade was ok, but by Friday afternoon there was too much pain to deal with. This Friday the doc and therapist cleared me to start getting back to normal. They said the foot would tell me when it was time to stop and all I had to do was listen to it. :D.

Learned quite a bit through this. Thanks to all for the encouragement along the way. The support meant and means a lot to me; not to mention all the patience for the forums knives.

I am only supposed to walk for the most part, but jogging a few feet is OK. Dogs and I went for a little over a mile.

Glad to hear that you are coming along, Gus.

Just a small observation. Watching the classic Chinatown over the weekend, and noticed that the guy who cuts Jack Nicholsons nose is carrying a swing guard, not an auto.

I've posted this before but it probably works well here at Carl's. The song is not about pocket knives but check out the slide that Mance Lipscomb is using.

The song may not be about pocket knives but the music, the Man, the era embody what this forum is all about.

Thanks for sharing this clip again!

I don' know what Mack the Knife used, but I do know that autos are very traditional, just not politically correct at present.

Don't get me started about salons. I started cutting my own hair in college because I couldn't find a decent barbershop near my school. I'm sorry, but unisex salons are anything but. They cater to women, children, and metrosexuals. No thanks. I'll pick the old barbershop everytime -- the one with cracked chairs, straight razor shaves, and off-color jokes. It just feels right somehow.

The dog gets a store-bought haircut, the wife gets a store-bought haircut, but me? I gets one in the kitchen (but I also gets cool stuff in the mailbox, if'n ya knows what I means).

Hi,

We took our 18 year old Daughter off to Collage today. And while I have three other Daughters, two older and married and one younger, Samantha has always been Dad's Girl.

I think she'll be OK. I left her with a Leatherman Surge, a Vic Super Tinker and a Vic Classic on her keyring.

When we left her there, I turned back to take one last look through the door. It was 4:23PM. I hope I raised her right.

Incredible shot. Hope you and yours are having a blast!

Thanks Gus! It's pretty nice out here but man is it HOT! I went on waverunners yesterday and my face and legs were a similar color to a tomato. Even at night it's in the high 80s low 90s it feels like. But it still is very nice and enjoyable :)

Mnblade-I actually don't drink but I did use a slipjoint to cut up a porkchop the other night :)

Man, that's one of the hardest things in life to do!!!

We only had one femalle issue out of our three kids, and yes, she was daddy's little girl.

It always comes as a huge shock when she has to leave home for the very first time. Or rather more exactly, you have to let go for the first time. Even when Jessica got married, and I walked her down the isle and handed her off to my future son-in-law, it took a great amount of will power not to tell him in my best Clint imitation, "Remember punk, you're bigger than me, younger than me, and stronger than me, but I'm a damm good shot! Think about that if you ever even think of being bad to my little girl!"

And I liked my son-in-law! But Jess was still daddy's little girl. It will never change.

First they learn to drive, then they go off to school, then they marry some guy who will never ever quite be good enough for her in your eyes.

But we have to let them go.

Carl.

Hi,

You are right as usual Carl. Got to let go of them eventually. This one is just a little tougher for me. But I'll get over it.

Just can't let her know how jealous I am of all the new adventures that lay ahead of her.:)

Been 10 days since I posted . . . just arrived in Seattle from an Alaskan vacation. We flew to Anchorage for 3 days, then took a cruise from Whittier, Alaska to Vancouver, B.C. and finished up with a 5 hours bus ride to Seattle for a couple more days. We had no internet service at sea. The cruise was great, but it's good to be back in the lower 48.

Congrats on your improved mobility, Gus. I know it's no fun being "sidelined."
