"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Just a quick post to say hello and hope that you are all well folks?

I've been pretty hectic this last 3-4 weeks. My boss handed in his notice and I was thrown into a 2 week trip to China, oh and November 5th is now nearing fast.....

Lots of catching up to do at home, work and on the forum. Sadly, I'll have to catch up with the latter at a much later date.

Anyway, I'm sure Jack has been keeping the British end up in my absence.

C'thee!

EDITTED TO ADD:

Thank you to willgoy for sending a great gift to which I was welcomed home....

...you sir are a gent

My pleasure Thom and many, many thanks for the Fox you sent me before all this.:)
It's good that you are back here now.

Regards, Will

I always enjoy looking at photos from other countries and their landscapes, so I thought someone might enjoy some of these...

Today was a beautiful fall day, so I decided to grab my bicycle and see where it takes me.
First I went by the neighbouring lake. Like at other lakes around here, archaeologists found remains of stilt houses from the bronze age. I remember being fascinated with them when we went to a reconstructed village in primary school :).

Certainly not going that way :)

That's better. It went uphill a lot, so it was time for a break and the sandwich I brought.

Now is the time when the Herbstzeitlosen blossom, these (poisonous) flowers cover whole fields.

And some other late bloomers.

I ate so much wild blackberries, I wouldn't have needed that sandwich :)

Gathered some handfuls of these as well, to make some jam for tomorrow morning (nothing better than fresh jam for breakfast).

Almost at home, just after a swim in the lake to cool off. Doesn't take too long this time of year :D

And of course some knife content, these were with me for the day.

I hope everyone else has a great weekend as well.

Sturzi,

1) Where's the bicycle?

2) You bicycled in your bare piggie toes?

-- Nice photo journey! Thanks for taking us along. :)

Sturzi,

Thanks for the beautiful pictures of your bike ride...scenery there is lovely.

Thanks for the tour, Sturzi. I only hope one day I can tour some of those places you and Fausto show us.

Carl.

Great pics of a beautiful country Sturzi :) I was also out hiking and eating blackberries yesterday! Will try to post some pics at some point. For now...

Sturgi, those are great pictures. I would love to visit your country someday.

The last 5 weeks have been our bow hunting season here in Oregon. A few miles from our camp, as the crow flies, there was a lightning strike that started a small fire. It didn't burn a lot initially, but we had some really strong winds that made it sped out. I was driving by the fire as I went to another hunting spot, and stopped and took a few pictures. For some reason the stump burning from the inside out fascinated me. There were actually a few trees doing this, but this is the only picture I took.

Just wanted to add a quick comment on those of you who know the Lierenaar.
Some of you may have noticed in my take on the knife that I own an original one frm the early 1900s. It's smaller, the metal is nested inside the wooden handle instead of on top of it etc. However, last week my parents, my girlfriend and I had planned a nice dinner with a couple of older familymembers, the man of which is a cousin of my grandmother on my father's side. Not véry close relatives, but we see them more often than some of the cousins or other closer relatives so we have a good and close relationship with them.
Anyway. I knew that he (the cousin of my late grandmother) carried knives with him but I never seemed to notice much about it. Until he was sitting right in front of me at the dinner. It was a Lierenaar, from his own father (who was born in the late 1800s, he was 50 when he became the father of that cousin). It's exactly the same as the new Lierenaar by Robert Herder. Same dimensions, the metal of the lockface on top of the handle instead of nested inside,... So there must have been different types and variations made back then. Different sizes, different ways of nesting the extended lockface in the handle but the same overall blade and handle shap and the same locking mechanism. Really cool and interesting. Next time when we meet, I'll have my camera with me :)

Had a great day fishing for rockfish on the upper Chesapeake on my friends boat with my father, my little brother, my uncle, my brother in law as of this Saturday, his father and the best man. A little bit of a bachelor party. I caught two rocks and yes I have pics but we aren't home yet and I am walking my pup when I get home and then passing out wherever I fall. We went out of Middle River to Tolchester and then to Carroll island at the Key Bridge. My little brother and the groom caught a couple rocks and blues . We got out late about 630 7, but we were out 12 hours .

I didn't even use a knife to cut line, a filet knife was used on the rocks we kept. I took a Gossman UNK, my Charlow and my Tribal Spear. Fried chicken and Angry Orchard cider was the menu for me too. Best time on the water I've had in a long time. The best man caught the first fish and was happy. He is good people and I am glad he is marrying my sister and was glad to contribute to this trip.

Aw man, I'm jealous as all heck! Nothing eats as good as a nice baked rockfish. Even better if stuffed with a bit of backfin crabmeat. Some cold brewski's to wash it down and that's good enough for a last meal. My best wishes to the groom.

Carl.

I had a blast. The charter itself is the captains wedding gift, and my gift was covering fuel for the trip.

Following along with Sturzi, thought I would post a couple of quick phone pics of the wee isle I live on.

This afternoon I was up at the north of the island, a place called Port of Ness (Statistically the windiest place in the UK) and about a half an hours drive from my house.

Two wee wet dugs.

I had a conversation with a forum member recently about this place, Blues, this is where the murder takes place in the first Peter May book. The boat shed in shadow on the bottom left of the image.

A better shot of it from the other side of the harbour.

This is a view of Loch Orasaigh from my road, a minutes walk from home. Beautiful sunset this evening.

Thanks for looking, if any of you should fancy a holiday to the Highlands and Islands, I recommend visiting the Outer Hebrides.

Idyllic looks can be deceiving. I took this picture right outside my hooch in Baghdad 19 December 2009.

Most dangerous things I ever have to face here are marauding sheep and midges. It is a beautiful and diverse world we live in.
