"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I'm getting a copy of the Levines Guide to Knives 4th edition. Part of a trade.

I will be reading the heck out of it. No collectors item books for me!

Migration to Texas.

So, the jackknife clan may be migrating to the great state of Texas. Last year, Karen's youngest sister did the move back, to be reunited with her old High School sweetheart. This year, Karen's middle sister did the move back to the Austin area to be near the youngest, and get away from the mid Atlantic winters in her and her fella's retirement. Now, Karen and I are going to visit for a while and keep an open mind while looking at housing. The housing down there is a fraction of what it is up here in the Washington D.C. area, and I confess, I really don't enjoy the winter like I used to. I don't have a lot of family left up here, so I'm thinking 'why not?'

Starting the middle of October, we're taking a long road trip down there, and over to see Carlsbad Caverns which Karen and I have never seen.

I know we have some members here from the Lone Star state, andmaybe even from the Austin area.
while I'm very familiar with the San Antonio area having served at Fort Sam Houston, I don't know squat about the Austin area. Anyone have the pro's and con's of Austin as a retirement place. Actually Georgetown, just north of Austin.

Thanks,
Carl.

Jackknife, we need to get lunch one day before you move. I work in Northern VA. Live south. Do the death commute.

Hi Carl,

I remember you talking about a possible move before. Hope your trip goes well, and that you make the right decision. We DO have members in that area (I've sent one or two package there!) Sounds like another adventure :)

Good luck to you and Karen in everything.

Jack

Work at Fort Belvoir. Live in Fredericksburg. You're in the Gaithersburg area, aren't you? I'll drive.

Oh man, you do the I95 commute?

You're a braver man that I, Gunga Din! I passed on a few jobs downtown because I couldn't handle the idea of the I270 commute. But Karen has a cousin that lives in Richmond, and we pass that way pretty frequently. We've got a big road trip we're getting ready for, but we'll be back by mid November. We'll have to do lunch then. Maybe few brewski's.

Carl.

Just a quick post to say hello and hope that you are all well folks?

I've been pretty hectic this last 3-4 weeks. My boss handed in his notice and I was thrown into a 2 week trip to China, oh and November 5th is now nearing fast.....

Lots of catching up to do at home, work and on the forum. Sadly, I'll have to catch up with the latter at a much later date.

Anyway, I'm sure Jack has been keeping the British end up in my absence.

C'thee!

EDITTED TO ADD:

Thank you to willgoy for sending a great gift to which I was welcomed home....

...you sir are a gent

The wanderer returns! :D

Good to have you back Scruff. Hope to catch up with you soon mate

Jack

Heyyy! Welcome home! Nice to have you back, chum.
...and what a nice photo with which to make your reentry! Must have been sweet to arrive home to such a nice present.

Great. Let me know. Looking forward to it.

Just so you know, this year the area was designated the WORST commute in the country, but I'm doing what I want in the job I chose after my first retirement (Army). Life is good. Another ten years or so, and I'll retire for good and hopefully pack up and move to East Tennessee or Southwest Virginia.

Now, THAT sounds good. :)

Wish I could join you guys for that gathering. Carl, please be sure to let us know before you actually leave, so that those of us who are fairly close by may come see you off (I'm pretty sure Dan will be game for it as well, eh buddy?).

You bet, we still have to do that crab feast!!! There's probably no blue crabs in Georgetown Texas. I'll make do with the gulf shrimp. I do remember some great shrimp dinners in Corpus Christi. But I don't think I'll be going anywhere real soon. We're going down to look around a bit, and we'd still have to put our house here on the market, and that will take some time. But the crux of it is, as much as Karen is tight with her sisters, she's very close with daughter Jessica and granddaughter Briana. They will be a tough duo to leave behind. And to be honest, I figure the boys can drive or fly down for a visit, but a daughter is always daddy's little girl. It's be tough to leave the girls.

Taken last Christmas. Jess, Bree, and old Blazer the hound.

Carl, we have to get together before you move man. The Old Line state has gotten bad, I'm moving to PA, but it's only ten minutes over the line. Still have that hour commute on 83 and 695. I thought 95 was bad in MD, DE and Jersey. No man, I went to Falls Church with a buddy, to give a presentation for work a couple years ago, and the traffic in DC, on the Capitol beltway and on 95 going down was horrible. I think this was right around the time they were doing the construction on the Beltway.

We need to get together. I don't think I've had more than maybe one or two crabs this summer! I usually have had a couple dozen by now. I've had crabcakes, but no steamed crabs. Heresy! Hopefully after this bachelor party/fishing trip this weekend for my future brother in law, and my sisters wedding the following weekend, I am trying to get some dates together for a trip to the Eastern shore. Then, the weekend after Columbus Day, Scott Gossman is holding his Gosstoberfest. It's more bushcraft based, but some here that are local would like it.

I got a copy of Levines guide to knives 4th edition in part of a trade, and just flipping through it I can see why this is sought after. Wealth of information that blows the Blade Guide out of the water.

Carl,
as Jack mentioned, you told us about your idea to move south, and it seems that the idea is growing up with time.
Well, I've heard there's a shortage of resolza's in Texas, so maybe it's time you bring yours down there :p
As for the lunch, MD or TX doesn't change that much to me, but I hope we'll manage to get together someday.
Obviously, there's always the possibility of you travelling here ;)
Anyway, keep us updated :)

Here's a quick little tip for people like us that measure knives by their closed lengths:

If you hold down the Alt button, and type 171, you get ½. Alt + 172 for ¼, and Alt + 0190 for ¾.

In fact, there's a whole bunch of characters and symbols that can come in handy like °, ©, and ®.

I'm unaware of any that do fractions of 8 or 16, but typing 3¼" looks so much nicer than 3 1/4" or 3.25".
