"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

The dog pictures are great, everyone. Thanks!

-- The holidays were decent (and in some ways quite nice) for me and mine, but right after Christmas I was felled by a flu from which I continue to recover. I am grateful that my brain has finally stopped dissolving my eyeballs.

ed. to add:

'bye, Crimmus.

Bummer about the flu, but glad to hear that you are feeling better!

I'm away from home for my winter holidays, so I won't post much this month, yet I'm trying to take some pictures for you, and I'm also collecting thoughts to share.
As for knives, right now, I'm travelling with just a SAK Classic and a Case SBJ.
Take care and and have a nice 2014 ;)

Have a great trip Fausto! I look forward to chatting again when you return home  ;)

Just saw a meteor streak across the western sky when I let the dogs out to take care of business.

Hope that everyone has the furnace and/or wood stove going, it will be a cold one tonight in Maryland. About 0 degrees in my neighborhood, with a -20 windchill. I foresee the pups coming in right quick tonight. I'm going to pick up makings for a pot of vegetable beef stew on the way home.

It was -14 on the front porch this morning with a wind chill close to -40.
i called in to work and said I may be in by noon but not to count on it -- the boss encouraged this.
SWMBO bundled up on the couch under 2 blankets until 9 or so when the sun started shining on her through the window - then she kicked off one blanket.

yup - they're calling for mid-40's here this weekend.
I'm going to have some muddy dogs.

mid 70's here.
But dry as a bone. Does not bode well for next fire season.

Finlay (1 year old, short haired) follows Jess (6 years old, long haired) everywhere and adores her. Time he had his wotsits removed.

Just because it's t-bone day.

Car said -6° this morning when I cranked her up. The little diesel didn't want to be bothered this morning.

I don't know how many of you listen to the Knife Journal podcast. It is entertaining and can pass away the hours when nothing else is on the radio. The hosts are Jim Nowka, former owner and the creator of Knife Forums, and BF member AverageIowaGuy. Both are southpaws, and commented on the most recent show about a certain knife company basically stating that they would not make a left handed framelock. This thread is not for the purpose of discussing modern one hand openers, but traditional folders and fixed blades.

Why would it matter you ask? The same way I feel, but I am righthanded. The reason I ask is because, three people right off the bat I know are southpaws. My brother, brother in law, and a buddy. Both were gifted knives made by this buddy, and both got the knives with right hand sheaths. They carry their knives on their left side, cross draw, and don't NEED a left hand sheath, their words. They've never complained about the nail nicks placement on any knives, and both will use their knives in their right hands if necessary. How do the southpaws out there feel? Is it an issue to you?

Finally got the well head pipes thawed out so we can have running water again. (Thank goodness the pump was fine.) Bought a bunch of R 19 and replaced the old degrading insulation inside the casing.
.
(But I'm gonna try to remember to leave a tap dripping tonight in any case since I didn't do so last night.)

I've got a new furnace being installed tomorrow. It's 7 degrees right now. I hope the old one makes it through the night.

It's easy to forget about the effects that extreme cold has on everyday things when you don't deal with it on a regular basis. Glad your pump didn't get damaged, Elliott.

Gary, I hope they get your new furnace installed without too much trouble so you're not without heat for very long.

I can't say that I've ever felt a need for anything specifically designed to be left handed. Since most things are designed for right handed people, you just learn to use them without really thinking about it and that often leads to being able to use either hand for certain tasks. It isn't until you use something designed for left handed people that you notice a difference. Before I really got back into knives, I never even thought about it. When I bought my first ambidextrous knife, it was kind of weird at first trying to open it with my correct hand. Now that I'm so used to it, I would have a hard time going back.

When it comes to slip joints, I have never complained about where the pulls are unless it interferes with access or they are just poorly positioned. It takes two hands to open them anyway. The only time I think about it is if I'm having a custom knife made specifically for me. I see it as a small detail that makes it a bit more personalized.

Sheaths are the only time being a lefty is bothersome for me regarding knives. Not enough left/ambi options available. Leaves southpaws with the additional expensive of having a lefty or ambi sheath made.
