"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

:D

Just checking in a bit. Tomorrow Katie and I have to attend the funeral for Katie's great uncle Andy. He passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday night, at the age of 92. He was a great man. He served our country in WWII, where he fought and was captured at the Battle of the Bulge. He survived 4 months in a prison camp, and then went on to live a full life here in Ohio, working in one of Akron's booming tire companies. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Fran, one son, Mike, and one grandson, Chris. He will be sorely missed. Even as he was slowing down in his later years, he never missed a beat and could still perfectly remember any details of the war and his early life. He would joke around endlessly, and passed his days watching basketball and fishing shows on TV. :)

Every year at Christmas Katie and I would spend the day at Andy's son's house. Andy's daughter-in-law, Deb, would cook a HUGE meal and we'd all eat together and without fail, at the end of the meal Andy would push his chair back, sigh, and say, "Well, that was pretty good. Beats what we ate in the war, anyway," and chuckle.

Here's a photo we took last month of Andy and his wife when they met my daughter, Julia, for the first time.

Rest easy, Andy. You were a great family man, a tough soldier, and a fine American. You will be missed.

My apologies as I hardly ever come here-in fact I have been very busy and haven't had much time to visit forums - I miss my Traditional family, I don't know what made me come in here - but I read this post.
What a lovely photo of complete opposites in life - beautiful older people - so frail and gentle - touching and holding with such care a wee new generation.

Andy sounds like the kinda guy I would have loved to sit down and spent the afternoon chatting to him, I really feel for his wife - my thoughts are with Andy's family right now!

We'll be off for a few days, Karen and I, camping down at Assateague Island National seashore. Been a while since we camped out so we're off to pitch a tent and rough it for a bit. The resolza will be my main knife for food prep, which is going to be Shepard simple. Nice Italian bread, couple nice cheeses, some hard dry salami, and other non cooking type of fare needing only a sharp knife. Of course the wine is going to be Italian as well. Karen will have her usual Opinel number 8 that has the hearts all over it as it was a Valentines day gift several years ago. So I guess one could say this will be a Euro themed outing.

See ya all in a few days.

Carl.

I don't know about you, Carl. But I am always surprised by how much harder the earth is each year under my sleeping bag. I always swear it wasn't that hard the previous year. Have fun out there!

Moving this thread to the lounge.

Good grief Carl!!!! You'll be there just in time for the sand fleas to hatch. Take a good bug spray with you. Oh, and enjoy the ponies.

Have a great time Carl

Me too Frank! :D

Enjoy your trip Carl.
As you might suspect, Sardinian knives, although born in the countryside and used by shepherds and such, are not alien to the sand and the sea...

Beautiful spot Fausto! This pic got me to wondering if there is any scuba diving in Sardinia? I may have to google it later to see ;)

As far as I know, there are a few spots here, but I have no idea of how they would rate on your scale :p
Anyway, if you need any info, you know where to ask ;)

Proud papa here! My youngest, the artsy-fartsy daughter, will receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts today from a very good art school, probably the best art program at any public university in the USA. I'm extremely glad she followed her gifts and talent at university. Today and tomorrow we celebrate.

That's three down and one to go. My son should receive his bachelor degree in December. There is light at the end of the tunnel. That'll be 4 family members we put through university in ten years --- two Associate degrees, three Bachelor degrees, and one Master degree.

Congratulations to you and your family Leghog

My youngest Mack was scared to death of the pool a couple minutes before I tossed him in. He was splashing and making a mess. The middle two chastised me for it, they wanted to relax in the pool.

So yesterday my artsy-fartsy daughter decided "my style" needs updating. Then she talked me out of the neon green ones though she did pick out a pair of neon green laces for me.

Wanted a pair when I was a kid, but Dad was just too tight. He did put my Mom and three kids through university so it's a wonder he wasn't even tighter.

Happy Mother's Day Ladies.

This year my son gets the family kudos for most amazing gift.
He lives in Hawaii and knows a lady who has a business making leis. She allowed him to pick flowers from her garden, then she showed him how to form them into a traditionally made Hawaiian lei, which he overnighted to his mother.

picked some 600 exotic flowers, made them into a lei with his own hands.

My daughter and I looked at each other and simultaneously said, "OK. Not going to come anywhere near that. Mike wins this year."

This is my first Mother's Day as a mother-in-law.

My daughter-in-law gave me this:
