Neat story, Primble! A boat lover cat..must have been a boat captain in its last life...lol

Happy Easter, Fausto!

I know it might be different in other countries, but in Italy today (Easter Monday) is also a holiday, so I took advantage of one of the first sunny days of the season, and took a walk at the beach with some friends :)

Apparently, it was a holiday here too, they just didn't tell anyone that showed up today ;). Fausto, I have been keeping your mantra in the forefront, I haven't really found many blades that I need to have over going on a vacation yet. Except for a cool and useful puukko from Scott Gossman, but that's beside the point...

As far as boat yard cats, I grew up around boats at Markleys Marina in Middle River MD. Old man Markley (Old Ben) was a boat builder from a long line of boat builders and died on the water, fishing, in a boat he built, with his sons on the Chesapeake Bay. Heckuva way to go out. Anyway, I remember Reba, she was the size of a whiskey barrel when she passed, and little Dixie, she was hit by a car from the bar down the road. I used to sit at this bar, and the gals would love it when Dixie came over. She of course knew me as the big guy that fed her, and the bar patrons had no idea that I knew her, and thought it was the cutest thing that she came right up to me. I of course had the food, and made sure to sneak her some treats. Got a few phone numbers.

Anyway, I've never seen marina cats. I've read about the obese cat that lived behind the bait station, and of course the boats that had Caterpillar engines. First time I have seen a boat yard cat was on Facebook, in the Chesapeake Maritime Museums page. Every boat they have for sale, this cat Edna Skrit is always on the bow, making sure all the work is done properly. I thought cats were bad luck back in the day on boats, but I've heard about old salts having a few around.

Dan, there are cats ALL OVER the wharfs and boat yards up here in Philly. Some of them are real salty, and chase the seagulls. I've even seen one of the big ones that hangs around our dock tangle with a mama goose, as she was leading her brood of chicks through the lot. He thought he was going to help himself to a baby goose dinner, and boy was Mom angry! For a minute or two they scuffled, but then I suppose he thought better of his situation and he took off. Pick your battles, huh? :D
As far as old salts keeping cats around... you can leave 'em behind when you set out, and they'll be fine taking care of themselves (might even clear out some of the riff-raff while you're gone). Try that with a dog. ;)

Hi folks,

My apologies once again for my continued absence. My home PC has had to go in for some work, and I'm still struggling with my newly-acquired IPad. I've got another Quest episode I hope to get up by the end of the week, and hopefully 'normal service' will resume soon. Hope you're all well and had a good Easter.

Glad to see you're still checkin in Jack, and tell your computer 'get well soon' :)

Just when we thought it was age to back in the water! ;)

Stick with that new fangled technowotsimy old man, you'll get there! :p

Hey Thom,

Last night was my last nightshift for this rotation and I've four days off now. I joyfully popped the cap off a bottle of miller this evening with the farmer you kindly sent. Felt all pleased with myself until Claire unscrewed hers. Then I felt foolish.

I'm just having a pint in the Benjamin Huntsman in Sheffield. The antique centres here have cleaned out my wallet! :D

Momma always said to keep enough for bus fare in your shoe, just in case ;)

Aye, but you didn't forget beer money did you! ;)

Just checking in a bit. Tomorrow Katie and I have to attend the funeral for Katie's great uncle Andy. He passed away peacefully in his sleep Wednesday night, at the age of 92. He was a great man. He served our country in WWII, where he fought and was captured at the Battle of the Bulge. He survived 4 months in a prison camp, and then went on to live a full life here in Ohio, working in one of Akron's booming tire companies. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Fran, one son, Mike, and one grandson, Chris. He will be sorely missed. Even as he was slowing down in his later years, he never missed a beat and could still perfectly remember any details of the war and his early life. He would joke around endlessly, and passed his days watching basketball and fishing shows on TV. :)

Every year at Christmas Katie and I would spend the day at Andy's son's house. Andy's daughter-in-law, Deb, would cook a HUGE meal and we'd all eat together and without fail, at the end of the meal Andy would push his chair back, sigh, and say, "Well, that was pretty good. Beats what we ate in the war, anyway," and chuckle.

Here's a photo we took last month of Andy and his wife when they met my daughter, Julia, for the first time.

Rest easy, Andy. You were a great family man, a tough soldier, and a fine American. You will be missed.

-Dan

Sounds like a life well lived. My condolences to you and your family, Dan.

My condolences to you and your family, Dan. Another of the "greatest generation" leaves us. May he rest in peace.

Sorry for your loss, Dan. Sounds like you were blessed to have circled in the same orbit as Andy, while he was around.
