"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Excuse the Yankee's ignorance, but do you get to carry a firearm on duty in Scotland? Or just a healthy nightstick like the Southerners?

How are y'all doing today? I want to talk about somewhat of a dying fad and that is cigars. As of late June this year I started smoking cigars. It started off with a Swisher Sweet that I saw in a gas station on my off night at my previous job as a camp counselor and since then I have quickly upgraded to hand rolled cigars. Right now my personal favorites are the Macanudo Portofino and the Wynwood 2012. I've tried many other brands as recommended by my local cigar shop keeper; which is a very classy store, but I only seem to like the two previously mention. I do like the sensation, the taste, and the appearance of smoking a cigar, but can't seem to find a good one. I was wondering if any of you guys happen to know of a cigar that has a subtle sweetness to it, because I like to smoke cigars after dinner when I do.

Same as the rest of the UK. A collapsible asp and a tin of CS to spray at the baddies ... Oh and of course, as batman calls them... The fists of Justice!

But back to the main topic... I kind of fancied trying out a fountain pen, but after the arguments I've heard I think I'll maybe pass. For the most part though, the simple reason of rain. I often have to write pages of stuff at soaking wet wind swept Hebridean road traffic crashes in the middle of the night. I don't think a fountain pen would cut it. :)

That brings up a question I've had. For the rest of the populace of the U.K., is the ASP collapsible baton legal to carry? The defense spray? Or would I have to just keep on carrying my trusty blackthorn stick?

I suspect that is the case!

I have been rolling in the street myself often enough with a bic crystal in my pocket and have had it explode.

I write a lot in work. A lot. I write in all sorts of conditions too and I'm obliged to use permanent black ink in my notebook which is a legal document. Once upon a time we used pencil. I would imagine it changed because pencil was too easy to rub out and change before giving evidence in court. It has been black ink throughout the duration of my service.

I'm enjoying this discussion. Thanks for your input ladies and gentlemen. :)

I've had a BIC crystal crack on me before, and they do break. I guess that's why I grew a love of metal body ball point pens. Very durable, yet easy to live with. My old Cross lived through 50 years with me, and the others have been about 10 to 15 years. Both the blue anodized and the red ones take a standard filler from staples, yet feel very upscale in hand when writing. Ihad a Zebra 701, but it grew legs and vanished. May have to get another one.

But I still love a pencil for general notes and reminder scribbles. :)

Edit to add; the Bic round stick pens are made of a much more flexible and durable plastic that you can actually flex back and forth. Very unlike the Bic Crystal that cracks and breaks if you stare at it too hard.

The asp is offensive weapon and couldn't really be argued as being carried for any other purpose than hitting someone. The spray is categorised as a firearm and thus carrying one without authorisation would create an offence.

I'd stick with the shillelagh. Which could very easily be and has often been considered an offensive weapon but of course, you require it for a walking aid, don't you?

;)

Of course I do! Doesn't this look like a poor crippled old man?

All this talk of fountain pens, they were all that I used in school, my handwriting is so atrocious that the fine point at least gave my teachers a fighting chance at deciphering what I had scribbled onto the pages. Nowadays for me, it is a Fisher bullet space pen, or a pencil if something needs scribbled onto paper, which seems to be more and more of a necessity as time marches forwards. Seems lately, if it aint wrote down, it don't get done...

I think fountain pens are great for careful handwriting, but not for scribbling or writing stuff down quickly, you need to use the nib with more care. Also of course, the ink takes a few moments to dry and can end up running. You'd definitely end up with a messy and probably unintelligible notebook Paul - which of course is a police officer's most important weapon! ;)

Have you thought about a Space Pen?

JB while I'm here I need to say how fnarkling good the quest knife is performing. 2 nights mess duty for diners club at work and tonights spag bol were a breeze. Little bit of a steeling after ,oil and away. A truly beautiful knife to work with. CHEERS .

Hi Meako, I'm sorry I missed this earlier. Great to hear it's working out. I've been keeping an eye out for a similar one, but haven't come across one yet. Hope you get many years of sterling use out of it my friend :)

From what we've seen and heard, I suspect it was meako that was doing the rolling! :D

:D

Actually I was sitting down to have a little rest on the way home from the pub and may have leaned over to examine an interesting piece of tar on the pavement for five minutes.A short while later whilst trying to decide whether to ring the missus for a lift up the hill I noticed that my smartphone screen had a large crack in it.It's a complete mystery -I mean it was in my backpocket where it always is.;)
At no time did any rolling take place...that I remember.

No- you need to hunch over more and look a bit confused. You actually look quite sharp and as for that Corgi-2 things -It's Welsh and It believes itself to be a gigantic wolf creature with the nippiest teeth in the whole forest. If I was to encounter the pair of you I would do that manly nod of the head and say "gdayhowyagoing" in my deep but somewhat standoffish voice whilst increasing speed but not enough to arouse the Corgis herding instinct.:D
Paul-Is it legal to posess a Corgi in Britain? I thought only her Maj QE2 was allowed to own Corgis.and eat Swans?
has anyone ever heard the story where the NASA Space station docked with the Soviet Space station ? The spacemen met in an atmosphere of friendship and political glasnost etc. The American spaceman showed the Russian his "spacepen" and told of how it took years and millions of dollars to develop a pen that would write in zero Gravity.
The Russian spaceman took a pencil out of his pocket and said "oh we use pencils" (in a Russian accent).

Paul-you could try Artline calligraphy pens 2.0mm water resistant felt tip. black.

Good day everyone.

Do you mind promoting the Manufactures Brand of Knives that you really like? or does that constitute being a Fanboy of sorts? I guess for me personally I don't mind. I have been wearing different guitar manufacturers shirts/hats for many years. Also H-D- shirts etc. I now wear Case XX and ZT shirts as well. They make great conversation starters.

Let's move this one to the Lounge. Thanks.

I wear some guitar stuff myself and if I had a Case, GEC or other hat or T-shirt I'd wear it. Obviously if I'm not a fan of what's on the hat/shirt I'm not going to wear it.

Hats are fine as long as I like the way they look. I'd love a GEC hat, but the ones they have been putting out are too busy with the logo and artwork and don't look to be great quality. If they'd make a nice clean looking hat, I'd buy one. I should buy a Case hat, they have one or two I like. Now if they are big enough for my head.....

As far as shirts, most of mine are plain..... mostly because I won't wear a shirt without a pocket.... unless I'm wearing my bib-overalls (as they cover the pocket needs).
