"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Do not ever send those revolvers to Ruger or they will be returned with the transfer bar safety (for idiots who insist on regularly loading the cylinder under the hammer of single action revolvers.

I too have an unmodified (no transfer bar safeties) Single Six and an unmodified Bearcat. The transfer bar safeties just screw up a good single action trigger pull.

Why are they idiots?

Personally, I'd rather have a transfer bar safety in a field gun. I would not have the gun modified to include it though. Also, a perfectly acceptable trigger can be had with one.... you need a good wheelgun gunsmith to do it though. There are only a handful of them out there though.

Ed - that is a great looking gun, a great reloading bench and a mighty catridge. Congratz, my friend!..

Thanks Andi. I've taken a couple elk and quite a few deer with that rifle. I enjoy the quiet time when reloading.

So today was fun, the wife and i got out and did a little shopping. First we went by the flea market/antique place. We didn't buy anything, but boy were they proud of their knives. I found a good looking old timer 80T pretty sure it was US made not the new chinese made version. It was obviously not "new" but looked to be in really good condition, they wanted $45. So i had to pass. I also found a buck 303 with some sort of bone handles, i started to get real excited about that, but they were wanting $35 and so the wife told me i had to pass again :/ I really wanted to see if could have any luck finding a decent hatchet head i could restore for cheap, but no such luck :/

Anyways, the reason for this story, I was walking around the parking lot (couple separate buildings) when i hear crying. I come around my truck and between my wives SUV and the truck next to ours was a little boy on his hands and knees crying and had quite a puddle of blood underneath him. So not knowing what was going on, i went to check on him. Long story short, there were 4 kids, 3 boys and a girl and they were messing around and the kid fell off the truck and hit his face and got a decent little nose bleed. So i look around and nobody had anything, so I pulled out my bandanna and let the kid use it to hold his nose. We got him seated on a bench while his sister cleaned him up with baby wipes nobody found until AFTER i had donated my bandanna ;).

So the kid was alright, the parents were found (like i said 4 kids, but the parents were shopping at the flea market and they had to be found) in which i stuck around until the parent showed up. After awhile the bleeding stopped and the little girl tried to return the now bloody bandanna. Sweet kid, she really was, good sister too from what i saw, taking care of her brother like that. Anyways, i donated it to them, in case he started to bleed again...

I never really carried a bandanna until i started reading Carl's stories, and while it had come in useful to me on a personal level, I can now see just how useful it can be in other circumstances. At least for that one kid, got to be a little bit of a hero i suppose :p. Also, another piece of wisdom Carl always espoused was to carry two. Now i see the wisdom in that, cause i only had the one on me and i was without any after that. So the SECOND stop was a tractor supply store, where i bought two more ;)

so, that's my little story for today. Bandanna to the rescue :D

I've got a pretty good pile of bandanas and handkercheifs in my sock drawer. Keep one on me and another in my pack.

They are handy.

Enjoying some of Jack's treasures that was sent by Royal Mial carrier pigeon. First up was popping the top on a bottle of some nice hard cider we picked up while down in the mountains in Virginia last weekend. They have a lot of new distilleries making hard cider form Virginia apples, and I'm all of fit. Any fool can eat an apple, but making some nice grade hooch is a good thing.

I figured as long as I was having a nice drink, I may as well enjoy a pipe to go with it. I used Jack's pipe cover for the breezy night, and it worked great. Kept the ashes where they belonged.

They are idiots for carrying/using a firearm they do not understand or for which they do not know how to properly use (load) and carry. The transfer bar safety is only necessary for those type people.

Why pay for a trigger job when one is usually not necessary without the transfer bar safety? Just use the gun properly modification which men have been doing for 100+ years.

Transfer bar safeties just screw the trigger pull on a single action revolver. Either learn to use the firearm properly and safely or don't use it. The transfer bar safety isn't the first time lawyers have screwed up Ruger firearms. One simply has to look at the paragraph of lawyer talk Ruger now roll stamps on the barrel. "READ OWNER's MANUAL BEFORE USING GUN" or "BEFORE USING GUN READ WARNINGS IN INSTRUCTIUON MANUAL" roll stamped on the barrel. Come on! Yes, it too is for idiots and the corporate lawyers.

I've had them both with transfer bar and without in stock and customized by top smiths. Andy Horvath and Bowen. Some superb actions can be had though these guys with the transfer bar but it will cost you.
Alas I had to sell all my custom single actions because they hurt when I shot them thanks to a motorcycle accident I survived. The trigger guard would come back and catch my knuckles a little bit but it was painful.

Using a tool you don't understand, but honestly there is nothing wrong with a transfer bar safety. Plenty of folks shoot a New Model at ranges way longer than the average bear with a transfer bar safety.

I could do without the warning lable, but at least they are now on the bottom.

I hope to be able to order a Bowen or Linebaugh in 2015..... got to pay for some other things first.

I have no guns. I'll have to set these ferocious pups on ye!...

... no work for me today, I have some leave to use up. Out the moor with the dogs, the photos are curtesy of my father-in-law.

Here is Jess,

and Fionnlagh (Finlay).

Enjoy your time off Paul

Thanks Jack, I'm just done reading your latest epic. I love the bobby reference! I think I'm right in thinking that the Met are the only force still to use the helmets. Although strangely, female beat officers in every UK force still have hard hats. I suppose they just assume all us knuckle dragging blokes have thick enough skulls!

:D

I haven't seen one of those particular knives in years Paul. I'll put it in the post to you if you'd like it
