"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I get hit with dotdefender about every other post.
clearing cookies did not work.

How bizarre - I was hit with it yesterday for the first time ever. I had no idea what it was. At first I thought it was something on my own Mac sent to plague me!

Never come across it yet

get plenty of Bladeforums 'Date Base Error' messages though :(

There is almost a thread about it in the "Technical Support..."-Forum. It seems to happen quite often, unfortunatelly. Spark seems to be fixing on that problem. It hit me just about one hour ago. :(

And Jack, you are right. The Date Base Errors seem to be common for almost some time, unfortunatelly.

my good buddy is turning 40 and i decided to drive out to see him. he just-so-happens to live about 40 minutes from Great Eastern Cutlery. i am going to stop in and check it out. i have been wanting to get there for a couple years. this it the excuse i've been waiting for!

it will take about 9 hrs to get out there from VT. time well spent, if you ask me. :)

there really is no point to this post. i'm just excited, and i expect some of you folks would understand. :D

as you were....

Nope. No luck. Shop was closed. This will give me an excuse to get back out that way, i suppose. i know my buddy wants me to join him for camping. I will say "yes", and he will think it's cuz i like him. :D

Someone asked for pics. This is the only one i could get. Treated myself to a steak dinner at Delmonico's near Albany on the way home.

Thanks for the tip Frank!

It may have been password memory lapse too.....:foot::D

Database error has become more or less permanent (unwelcome) visitor....

Greetings you fine folks,

I wonder in wat way the economical recession affects your knife hobby.
Back in early 2004 when I started my knife crazyness I joined the Spyderco forums.
Having a steady income at that time I could participate like many of you do on this forum; buying the latest models and talk about them on the forum.
Heck I have 6000 + posts on the Spydie forum :)
Then disaster struck in noveber 2004 and they pulled the plug out of the printing shop I had been working for over 14 years.
From that time on I have been going from contract to contract...
When the savings were all gone and with longer times between jobs there was no way I could join the Spydie crazyness anymore, so in 2010 I tried my hands on traditionals being a lot less expensive.
Being unemployed for one and a half year now, I have close to nothing to spend on knives.
I love coming over here because of the friendlyness similar to the Spyderco forums way back.
Only I find it a pity I can't participate like the most of you do.
There are quite a few models I would like to try out, but for a GEC Barlow for example or other, I can eat and pay for gas for two weeks.
So for the time being I try to enjoy the few Traditionals I have and hope for better times.
Maybe then I can join like the most of you and post a little more.
Sorry for the rant, but I felt I had to share this with my second (cyber) family ;)

Thanks Carl for the wise words.
At the moment all of my spare money goes to my son for the most part.
After two and a half years of problems (including drugs) he is slowly but surely crawling back on his own.
He lives a good two and a half hour drive away from me at a house for room training where he learns how to live on his own and cope with his ADHD and weed withdrawl (he's 18 now)
His mother is in deep debts so all of the extras has to come from dad.
Luckily I have a nice array of European working knives and 3 Peanuts I was able to buy in the better times.
Most of the time the big aution doesn't send overseas unfortunately.
But hey, who needs more than a Peanut anyway? :D;)

Hey folks,

I have to get something off my chest.
I'm afraid I took advantage off tthe goodness of this forum by posting the above with the intention that there would be someone of you giving me a knife.

And sure Sitflyer and pmew were that friendly to give me resp. a nr 15 boy's knive and a nr 25 sheepfoot.
Despite the fact I love both knives, I still feel bad about it and am reluctant to use them.
So sorry Duane and Paul :o

But little update:

Financial situation still the same and so is the situation of my son( although a bit better luckily)

And a few months ago I thought it would be wise to skip the last step of the stairs in my girlfriends apartment and there flew 300 pounds of Arend to end shoulder down on the cold concrete.
Kept on going untill the pain became too bad.
Right shoulder appeared to be fractured in 2 places.
So, hospital, major surgery and there's spydutch recovering from a "frozen shoulder".

No, 2014 isn't been so kind to me. Hoping for a better 2015 :D

Arend, I hope 2015 works out better for you than last year did.

Hey - that #25. Don't feel guilty about using it, you should feel guilty about NOT using it! It belongs in your pocket or in your hand, so get to!

:D

Arend, Please, no apology needed my friend. Please put any guilty feelings away. It was my pleasure to send that knife your way, and it would please me if you would use it somehow. Here's hoping that your shoulder heals quickly, and that 2015 will be a much better year for you!
:)

Duane

Thanks Paul and Duane :thumbup::thumbup:

Still have a hard time sharpening being right handed but just finished touching up the 25 and now my shoulder is a bit shot LOL
As soon as it has recovered a bit the 15 will take it's turn and both knives will go back in my rotation ;)

Arend, look at me, listen up!

A knife unused is a knife unloved!

Use them.

Well my start to 2015 was a bit nuts. We had a passenger plane with 26 passengers crash on take off at Stornoway airport on my first day back from paternity leave...

The crazy was just beginning.

On another note, at home Finlay has become very protective of wee Rory and hardly leaves his side. This surprised us, we thought Jess would be playing mother hen.

I'm not surprised and am interested in what happens when Rory starts to walk. Finlay is a herding group dog.

When our youngest child was born, we had a Cardigan Welsh Corgi named Samy. When Matt started to stagger about, it was okay as long as he was in the crib/living room area. If Matt started down the hall or into the kitchen, Sammy would get in his way and bark at him to herd Matt back into the immediate area of his crib. It was actually hilarious that Sammy would herd Matt, and keep him out of trouble. Better than a nanny, Sammy would work for just bacon treats.!:D

Herd dogs are so darn smart. They know what to do.

Thanks for sharing the pic of Rory, Paul. :)

He is what we in Germany call a "Prachtkerl". Word to word translation wouldn´t make any sense, but he is a great looking boy.

Great looking young man there Paul! Did the nose gear just not come down on the plane? Hope all on board were fine, scary ride was had I bet! Steven

On take off, just as they approached lift off speed a strong gust pushed them onto the soft ground. The landing gear at the nose simply collapsed under the pressure of off-roading it! A couple of walking wounded but aside from that, no injuries other than pride and the airline's bank balance. A very lucky escape.

The official aerospace term for that is an "oops".

Glad there were no serious injuries.
