"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

It's been cold here and the loch behind the house froze. Then there was a semi thaw and the melt water ran into our lawn before it froze solid again. The lawn is now a solid sheet of green coloured ice with little divots and hummocks where the grass shapes it from underneath. Jess and Finlay were racing about it yesterday fighting over a tennis ball and Jess has torn one of her forepaws up. Silly wee dog. We only realised when Claire asked me where the red streaks in the ice were coming from. Jess pretends that there is nothing wrong and tries to hide it when I go to look.

lying on her rug trying to look superior.

have a good evening everyone :)

SWMBO's Aussie Shepherd gives me a similar look on a frequent basis.
(none of our dogs are "mine" according to them -- I'm just the monkey-boy who is supposed to provide food, water, and door opening services whenever called upon)

Paul, the look in those eyes, I wouldn't dare to try to look at the paw! It is amazing how strong their instinct to hide an injury is. Hope it's not too bad.

I have always been fascinated with small engines, I fly Radio control airplanes and love to dis-assemble those tiny engines and re-build them. Something I have always wanted to play with is a Sterling engine, and my better half got me this thing for Christmas this year.

I feel like a little kid, all giddy, just watching it ramp up to speed as the heat builds in the chamber.

Hey folks! I hope you all had a very good Christmas! As I posted before, I was recently fairly laid up by the flu, which morphed into a sinus infection.

Things got worse. My sinus infection turned into an upper respiratory infection. I didn't feel too bad, but I could only manage an hour or two of sleep each night since I was coughing so much when I'd lie down. Last Monday, after a particularly sleepless night, I left work early to head to the doctor's office to try to get something for the cough. I arrived at the office and sat down in the lobby, and immediately felt like I was going to freeze to death. I literally could NOT stop shivering. I'm a pretty big guy, I don't get cold easily. This isn't good...

I finally got called back into the exam room, where my 2nd wait began. I made it about 10 minutes and then had to run to the bathroom where I tossed up my lunch. I immediately felt better, but the doctor said that I had an upper respiratory infection and ANOTHER touch of the flu bug. Great. He prescribed me an antibiotic and some strong cough medicine, and said that the flu symptoms should pass by morning. I thought all was well. Wrong.

He cleared me to leave and I followed him out of the exam room. I felt a little woozy, but thought I was ok. I made it about 25 feet following the doctor, and the next thing I know, I woke up on the ground. Apparently I passed out and took a little dive. They called my wife and dad, and I got to take my first ever ambulance ride! I got checked out at the hospital and they determined that I was somewhat dehydrated and just plain old exhausted. Two bags of IV fluids and many hours later, I was cleared to leave.

I felt better and better, and wound up having a very merry Christmas with Katie and Julia. They even got me a new knife!

So that was all good. Yesterday, Sunday, was by 32nd birthday. We had a wonderful, relaxing day just lounging around and visiting with family. All was great, until around 9pm. We were just putting Julia to bed for the night and my phone rang. My mom was calling. Hmm... That's unusual. I answered, knowing that my dad was in southern Ohio at work until 6 the next morning. Oh, what's that? Your kitchen floor is flooded? Ok, just stay out of there, I'll be over.

Oh Lord. No, it wasn't flooded, per se. It seems as though something went horribly wrong with their septic system and the downstairs toilet pretty much grenaded. Yep. I spent the last three hours of my birthday (and two hours after) cleaning up sewage. It's a good thing these people gave birth to me...

In any case, I got the mess cleaned up, got the basement drains temporarily opened, and got them back in business until a professional drain cleaner can work on things.

So that's where I've been and what's been keeping me busy! Yikes! I'm glad New Year's is this week. I'm sorry if my story was a tad gross, but I just had to share it with someone!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and have a happy new years! Take care, and may your new year be filled with health, happiness, and traditional knives galore!

Dan, I may never complain about a holiday again! Glad you're feeling better and hope all turns out ok at your folks place.

That day was the REAL "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!" Glad you survived it, and hopefully it is all behind you know. Happy Birthday!

And I thought we had it hard with the newborn! Glad you made it Dan, make sure you treat yourself to a bevy at Hogmanay!

And I thought we had it hard with the newborn! Glad you made it Dan, make sure you treat yourself to a bevy at Hogmanay!

A bevy of….Larks? Swans? Roebucks? Beauties?

Do people buy bevies of beer on the Hebrides? Is that like a six pack?

Oh, wait. You said Hogmanay. A bevy of Scotch? A bevy of Haggis?

Throw me a clue, here. :p

Phew!! A bevy of good health will do!!

Happy Birthday, belated, to Julia and to you, and Happy New Year, Dan and everyone.

I am guessing "bevy at Hogmanay" = a beverage during New Year's celebrations.

Dan, sounds like you and I caught similar bugs. I was out with flu and associated illness right through the holiday week. Tomorrow will be my first day back at work.

Sorry to hear, Dan! I hope the mishaps are over now and you can go to the new year with a smile.

Strange bugs seem to be around. Here as well - I didn´t get it, until now. I was ill at mid November. But the flu will come every year.

Sounds like you've had some ups and downs Dan, glad you're OK my friend  That's a great pic of Julia :)

Here's wishing you, and everyone, a very happy 2015

Jack

Five hours cleaning up a horrible mess for your parents on your birthday, now that is love right there!
Hope you and yours have a Happy New Year, and may troubles leave you alone!

I suspected I was gradually getting "something" and by Christmas afternoon, I knew. I hit the bed. Didn't even have the traditional Christmas meal. Christmas was thursday and this is Wednesday almost a week later. I had an ear ache on Christmas. Went to the doctor yesterday as I was not improving on my own. Both ears are infected and I can barely hear anything. Pretty quiet world right now..... Doctor perscribed a double doze of super anti biotics which I started yesterday. Feel a little better this morning, but can't sleep consistantly.

Dan that is a terrible christmas story but you have a really cute 10 month old daughter.

It's a mite nippy this morning in San Diego. Currently 45°F with wind speeds of 20mph at 9 AM. That's parka weather for us thin blooded types.
