I have known Ryan Daniels for some time, I've been trading with him for some time. I met his lovely wife Courtney and just met Ken at the recent Mason Dixon show. I picked up the traveling bug bad from both my grandfathers, they were both traveling salesmen. One grandfather sold on the Eastern shore, the other sold in the mountains of Pennsylvania. This was where they were from. My Jogie, a really poor spelling of the Polish word used for grandfather, was still traveling after he retired, and had a gigantic soda truck he used. One time he called my father to come meet him at the Conowingo Dam, his brakes had gone out and he wanted my father to leave his shop and let my grandfather follow him, in the soda truck, if he hit anyone he would hit my father. My father told him he would come and get him, but he sure as heck wasn't going to let my grandfather rearend him with the soda truck! My grandfathers reply was "That's what your brother said!". Anyway, long after this, my grandfather went to the coal hills to visit family often. My mothers father passed when he was 39 from the same ailments that afflict me, except I don't smoke and the Irish gene for drinking passed over me. He did however get around and was a frequent guest of Robert Mitchum's, who kept a horse farm on the eastern shore.

I love to travel, and for health reasons, I don't always do well in long car rides. I have to stop and get out, a lot, to just walk around. The most I've traveled is about four hours by car, at least I'm a lightweight in some things. I'd really like to take a week and visit the factories in Titusville and in Bradford, possibly Canal Streets factory in New York. That's a lot of driving. It is almost a sure thing that I won't be able to make it to Great Eastern Days, can't do Queens open house which Ken Daniels said is only once a year because that's what his insurance allows. I'd love to get a tour of the Case factory but I'm not sure what that entails, maybe the Zippo museum is the only option for a visit or tour. I'm sure their company stores are pretty impressive.

I know a few of you have traveled to the GEC and Queen days, and some of you have been to the Case factory. I don't know if CSC offers tours. Thanks for any tips or suggestions you may have, and I'd love to see some pics. Also, if you had been to the Camillus or Schrade plants before they closed their doors, I'd love to see pics and hear stories.

Lovely pic Sarah. A little pride goes a long way.
Now pardon my complete lack of knowledge but "what is The Big Suck.?":confused:

Thanks, everyone!

Meako, within the USMC universe, "TBS" stands for The Basic School, six months of intensive training for every newly-commissioned officer (out of which each officer's MOS -- career-- is determined/confirmed).

The TBS mission statement:

"Train and educate newly commissioned or appointed officers in the high standards of professional knowledge, esprit-de-corps, and leadership to prepare them for duty as company grade officers in the operating forces, with particular emphasis on the duties, responsibilities, and warfighting skills required of a rifle platoon commander."

More colloquially, TBS is referred to as, The Big Suck. As I understand it, there's lots of sleeping on the ground involved, with a toss-up between which session is worse-- summer TBS in the Virginia swamplands, or winter TBS in the frozen Virginia swamplands (my son endured the latter). :D

CSC does not have usually scheduled tours, but we contacted Eric ahead of time, and they were gracious enough to allow us to tour their facility. The wawarsing historical society and cutlery museum is also in town, most worthy of a visit!

Thanks, Vic!

I think of you (and John L) often, and always whenever my son takes another new step forward.

Our hearts remain full due to your generosity and encouragement; Isaac still holds (and speaks of) the knife and your kindness with great reverence. Thanks again!

(Reference: From the Archives-- 2012?!)

We really don't know how to thank you guys.

Vince's description and close-ups of the knife here.

Vince, thanks for the continued glimpses into Mr. Lloyd's philosophy and approach-- much appreciated.

We're still in awe of what just happened....

Congrats, Sarah!! And thanks for the follow-up explaining TBS. Since I have no military experience, I had googled that upon first reading your initial post and found it quite interesting. Does your son know what's next for him? What did he select for his MOS (or is that assigned according to the wisdom of Marine powers-that-be, rather than selected by the individual according to her/his interests and talents?)? Anyway, your pride seems well-warranted!:thumbup:
