"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Welcome the newest member of the leghog clan. My first grandchild was born at 0251 EDT on Thursday, 23 April 2015. She was 4 weeks early. Tiny at 4 pounds 6 ounces. Emery Christel. We've called her TLO (the little one) since the beginning, and she lived up to that name. I'll probably call her TLO as long as we both live. My new name is Pops. TLO is in the NICU, but she's ok as is her mom. Haven't yet held TLO but got to touch her and kiss her. I cried. My daughter laughed. Her mom, my oldest daughter, should be discharged today. Don't know about TLO. Only thing keeping her is her in the NICU is her blood's bilirubin levels and the risk of jaundice.

Hello,

Congrats on your new name and on the birth of the sweet baby!

Beautiful baby! May she live a long, good, healthy, happy and beautiful life.

Cate
PS: April 23rd is a very good day in my family's history! Not a birthday though. I was a premature baby and my late Dad called me 'Small One' a LOT and I was called Little Catherine too. Big Catherine was my late Mom's best friend through HS, college, etc., she was my mentor and oldest best friend until she died and our family lawyer. We called her 'Aunt' Catherine even though she was not a blood relative. She was closer to us than any blood aunt or blood uncle too. Her old law partners from her old firm used to say Aunt C. to me when we discussed her too. Excuse the thread drift in my post.

Sending prayers, mojo and smoke for Andi's family AND Baltimore.

On a lighter topic, if I may ...... You've heard of a "pocket dump" where folks show what they're toting. How about a "shoe show" where we see what you're walking around in these days?

For me, it's my Ariat ropers. Dang comfortable boots!

And you?

Nice boots!

I don't have a picture to show you but I wear LL Bean leather moccasins or fluffy slippers the most here at home since I am retired.

Her father calls her Nugget. I'll probably go with that.

Sorry for your loss Carl

Thanks for the pics and an interesting piece of history

Thanks all, but we are not morning Uncle Ralph. Maybe we're a weird family, but instead we celebrated the heck out of his life. A nice old fashioned wake, with his favorite music, drink, Southern cooking, and lots of stories and shared memories of the man. Ralph was Karen's dad's youngest brother. Karen's dad, Billy, was a WW2 Navy man, and Ralph wasn't old enough for WW2. So when Korea rolled around, he served there on a Carrier off the coast. On his last day he told his family he didn't want any grieving being done because he'd had such a good time in life. So we celebrated.

From early April to early October my footwear is Keen sandals. Ilove them, and use them for 99% of the time. Hiking or lots of cross country walking I'll stoop to Merrill's or New Balance All Terrain shoes. It has to actually snow a lot to get me to wear any kind of boot. I just don't like heavy footwear. I've got an ancient pair of Red Wings that I only wear when it snows.

I love those too! I have a problem with stubbing my toes a lot, it seems I'm just rough on my feet, so these (I call them toe protectors) come in real handy.....I can finally wear sandals!

Keens are quite comfortable. When I'm working (which I'm not for a while now), I wear Keens Work shoes. They look like a low hiking shoe with composite toes for safety. They're very lightweight compared to the heavy steel toed boots I wore for many years. It really makes a difference, especially when you're on your feet for 12 hours a day. They are lightweight enough and pretty good looking to the point that I'll even wear them for casual wear too.

That's a great way to honor him.

That's the way to do it Carl

As for footwear, as an ex professional outdoor gear tester, I have more boots than Imelda Marcos had high-heels! :D With broken metatarsels and arthritis in both feet I can't wear the real stiff ones anymore, but I still wear boots for most of the year.

LOL! :D:D I wonder how old one has to be to appreciate this reference?? I make some incredibly hilarious remarks (just trust me) in classes I teach that fall completely flat with 18-21 year olds!:p:p

Well in this instance, that reference would definitely fly over their heads as they weren't even born yet when that all come to light. :D

We were born in the Industrial Age.

They were born in the Information Age.

And never the twain shall meet. (Another reference they will probably miss.)

I spend my working life in these....

...but when I'm not working my preferred footwear would be wellies or flip-flops (they're thongs Meako) :)

and don't I know it ! for I am married to an English rose .
In Australia they are also known as chinese safety boots.
I like this topic and will get a pic of my heavy duty bootys up later.

They look comfier than DM shoes Paul :D

When I was a wee boy, it was either wellies or Woolworth's plastic sandals, short trousers irrespective of the season so all the boys had red rings round their calves from the wellies. I know it was the same in Scotland back then. You'd have Social Services knocking on the door if you sent your kids out wearing shorts with snow on the ground now! :D

Paul - Haix is a great shoe company. A little expensive but very durable and long living. Great great shoes. :)

I´m just curious if any guys of you have a holiday tomorrow as well? In Germany / Middle Europe it is "Day Of Labour" (Tag der Arbeit). A little strange that we are off from work on this day... ;) ... but not unhappy about this fact.

America celebrates Labor Day in September.

I don't know why we ignore the traditional association of Labor with May 1st.
