"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Sorry to hear about your bad news, Kris. That must have been a heart-sinking moment! But it sounds like it's just a delay. As my grandpa always said, "Could be worse!"

Felt that one Kris, ouch! :( Hope you get a beautiful knife in due course

The family and I will be heading to Leicester, NC, a town outside of Ashville, for my little sister's wedding the first week of June. I've driven through Ashville a few times and it is a beautiful area. I have never stopped long enough to enjoy it though. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to see or do?

I know of two knife makers I would love to drop in on that live near there but not sure that would work.

Laura, my wife, will be entering her 9th month of pregnancy so, while I would love to get in a day hike, I don't want to leave her, or try to do something she can't do.

Thanks

Normally I'd recommend the Biltmore House but she won't feel like that much walking. The sheer opulence of the property is staggering.

Thanks Jerry. My sis actually works there and we may go look at the grounds and let Adalynn run around. It would be neat to get a picture of her where I stood at her age when I was there last. It certainly worth trying.

Man everything I would recommend is not appropriate for a pregnant wife.

My dad and I were just there last weekend for a guided fly fishing trip and we had a blast. There are a ton of good places to eat (and drink). One of my favorites was the Wicked Weed which had great food and some awesome microbrew beers...porch crawler was my favorite.

Is the Wicked Weed a historical shout out?

The use of hops in brewing was developed in German monasteries. Brewing beer with hops came to England in the fifteenth century, courtesy of the Flemings.

At the time conservative voices made great outcry against this newfangled foreign herb. They were sure “the wicked weed called hops” would ruin the good old English drink.

For a while a brew flavored with traditional English herbs was called ale. A brew made with wicked hops was called beer.

The other wicked weed I can think of gets rolled into joints. :p But it’s only wicked because it’s illegal.

KBA,

Have a safe and fun trip!

Blessings to you and yours.

Cate
PS: My former banker from my former GL region state moved to Asheville, NC. She loves it down there too.

local brewery here does a Heather Ale as one of their seasonals -- no hops.

Yep, they have a little story on the menu that names the British monarch that quote is attributed to. I would try to recall it but I indulged in a little to much porchcrawler that night.

Thanks Cate. :) If Laura, my wife, and I didn't have to live where we do, we would move near there as well. We actually dream of moving to North West Montana more so though. :D

Justin - Thanks for the heads up on a few places to eat. I don't drink but good food is always welcome. :D I'll certainly try to find a few antique stores to hunt through. I've always want to see Waynesville and the Brevard area and I'm sure there will be a few throughout there.

My son graduated cum laude on 9 May 2015, given and accepted a job offer in his field on 13 May 2015, and began working on 18 May 2015 with the understanding he'll need to take a break from his job for the month of July 2015. In July he'll be travelling to Israel to continue field work in conjunction with the Hebrew University in Jerusalem because his trip is being funded by the university from which he just graduated and the Biblical Archeaological Society. Proud papa here. Also with that, I was able to get my wife and three kids through post secondary school with degrees debt free. Didn't know if I could pull that off considering there were times three of them were in school at the same time.

Brett, Brevard is a nice area, one of my friends owned a summer home there for many years.

Food wise, the Weaverville Milling Company was always very good, but a little pricey. For more eclectic tastes, Tupelo Honey is popular.

Congratulations to your son for his recent and future accomplishments!:thumbup:
Special congrats to you, leghog, not only for what your son has done that makes you justifiably proud, but also for the amazing task of getting 4 people through degree programs without debt!!:thumbup::thumbup: I teach at a college and have some idea of how expensive college education has become, and really admire you for being able to get your family started on careers without the huge financial burden that so many grads start with.

I was wondering what's happened to Humppa?

Andi is usually a very keen poster on the Forum but he has fallen silent. I've sent him a PM some time back but I've yet to hear, I hope our friend is alright.

Thanks, Will

Thanks for posting this, Will. All week I've considered asking the same question here in the lounge. Please let us know if he responds to your PM.
