"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thank goodness they are safe. Elliott thanks so much for the update on Jerry and Janice. They will be in all our prayers in the coming weeks. I had just talked to Jerry a couple of weeks ago.

Good for your reaching out Elliot, a true concerned friend. Prayers for Jerry and Janice, the loss of Bandit and all others in a similar situation:thumbup:

Elliott, thanks for not only making the effort to contact Jerry, but also for the follow-up, posting the information here for us.

Smoke raised for that whole area of Texas.

Wanted to let folks know that I contacted the San Marcos, TX PD and Hays County Sheriff's office today to see if they could help me track down Jerry Halfrich who I had been unable to contact since the flooding in Texas devastated his area.

They were supremely professional and kind enough to go out and find Jerry on my behalf, (whose home and belongings (including knife making equipment) have been damaged, ravaged or destroyed), and have him reach out to me. He and Janice are safe and sound after escaping their home through a window and making their way to the roof. Tragically, Jerry lost his longtime companion "Bandit", his beloved Jack Russell terrier to the catastrophe. And their parrot was also lost to the ravages of the flood.

Jerry's cellphone was washed into the raging torrents due to the rotor wash of a rescue helicopter so he can't be reached and there is no longer a land line...but I told him I'd let folks know that he and Janice are alive and being well provided for by family and friends locally.

Please keep them and all that find themselves in such straits in your thoughts and prayers.

Hello,

Thank you for this update.

They will be in our prayers.

Cate

As others have said, thanks Elliott! Thoughts and prayers go out to Jerry and Janice.

Thanks Elliott!
I hope they don't suffer too much getting their lives back in order - it's going to be tough!
Let me know if I can help!

Wow, sorry they lost their home and pets, but glad they are alive. Thanks for finding out that they were alive Elliott. Prayers from Maryland for them and everyone else affected.

But the forum changed somehow in last few months. It became more a challenge of who is getting which knife / item and not the discussion about it.

I agree with you Andi. Even though I haven't been around as long as you and others, I try my best to avoid this behavior. I'm glad for those who do get one or ten new knives, don't get me wrong, it's an awesome feeling! But the discussion, the background, the why you picked that model and not this, the history, that's what I love. I've avoided a few threads, and knife patterns (barlow) because it was getting out of hand. My other beef lately, is people opening a new thread, when there are 5 threads open on the same topic!:thumbdn: I'm glad you love your new 'xyz', but there is an 'xyz' thread, a new knife thread, a manufacturer of 'xyz' thread, a picture of 'xyz' thread, etc, etc, already going. Instead of a new thread on "what xyz should I buy?", do a little digging!

This is the best subforum I have ever been a part of. Thanks to BF, moderators, and keepers of knowledge and history for that! Glad you're back Andi, and you're not alone in your feelings on some issues.:)

Andy and Brad, we hear you regarding the focus on the "challenge of who is getting which knife". We do our best to maintain the focus on the knives instead of the buying process, but the line gets blurry sometimes. And we get push back as well for our efforts. But we continue to do what we can.

Couldn't have said it better.

Frank and Gary, thanks for all your work here, you are the gatekeepers against a tidal wave of grabbiness! ;)

The Lounge is a good place to share different perspectives, voice concern, be irreverent, share details about the grim and the beautiful. On the latter and lighter point this beautiful European Red Squirrel has been visiting the country place. She has a drey nearby and prominent nipples meaning either pregnant or nursing some kits, she certainly has a huge appetite and Red Squirrels generally only feed twice a day, she seems to be feeding constantly! Hungry mouths to feed...

She is not alone, this pair of fine Bullfinches were busy earlier this month and I think there are about 5 pairs visiting regularly with nests very close by.

Enjoy the coming week everybody, Will
