"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Well, you may find a stub of a pencil, like a golf pencil. Good for taking down a note on something, but also used for scraping with a pen knife blade for the graphite. An exellent source of a dry lube. The pencil stub will be wrapped with some black electrical tape. That tape was the duct tape of their day. Can hold a lot of stuff together with some of that old cloth type electrical tape.

There will be a stub of a candle in there. Good for a lite in a cabin or something, also good for getting a campfire started. But the wax is also a good lube. Rubbed on a zipper, the zipper will work better, as will a rough screw or bolt. Also drip a bunch of wax on threads of a screw, and it fits tighter in the hole and won't vibrate loose as quick. Sort of a primitive locktite.

There will be some wooden strike anywhere matches, wrapped up in some tin foil. The foil serves multiplle uses. Keeps the matches dry and together, and also can be used for other things.

A few rubber bands and paper clips. Paper clips are a good source of a piece of steel wire for a makeshift repair.

Some spare flints for a Zippo lighter. In a pinch, a Zippo can burn almost any kind of fuel, but when you need a flint, you really need a flint.

A few fish hooks and split shot sinkers.

A few nuts and bolts and washers.

Maybe a little piece of broken off carborundum stone, for touching up that pocket knife.

Some thin but strong twine of some sort. A few yards of it coiled up small.

That tin was thier survival kit. It could change, depending on where they were in their life.

Carl.

Awesome. Thanks for the response. I love the the idea of this type of set up. It all seems very practical and useful in many situations, as opposed to the "personal survival kits" that people put in small tins, and probably never use. I might have to try putting one together and see how it works out. Thanks again.

Hey guys, thought I'd share with the trad folks some good news...my visa to the US has finally been approved! just one more step before I can head home to my wife and kitty (plus a pile of knives I've bought :p). Pretty excited, while this immigration has drawn out we've pretty much had to put our life on stand still until it approved.

I can't wait to get back to the US!

Congrats, Robert. Hope it's a lot sooner than later at this point.

Congrats Robert, happy to hear that everything's coming along.

My 3 yr old daughter. She asked for a apple this evening just before I left for work.I got her one out and washed it and handed to her and she took a bite and went into the living room and i followed her and sat down at the computer. A few mins later I looked and she had a plastic knife from her tea set and was trying to cut her apple, I asked her what she was douing , and she said Im cutting my apple like you do daddy. It was a proud moment. She asked me awhile back for a pink knife. lol Just thought I would share. Thanks for reading. I know that there isn't anything traditional about this post, but traditional knifes are about all I own and hopefully she will grow up and like the simple things in life like a well made slip joint.

 good stuff right there- little girls will sure make you smile :D

My girl is 2 1/2. She has a pink mini trapper as well as a few other knives she will get when she is six or so. I made her a wooden knife for her birthday and she opened that bad boy up and started shaving arm hair 'just like dadda'. Bought broke my heart. She is very careful and respectful when we "play" with my knives. If I had a boy, we'd have been to the ER already I reckon.

Hi,

If brought up properly, young Ladies do enjoy fine slip-joints. My Daughter Samantha, will be heading off to Guatemala Wednesday morning for two weeks. She is a member of Engineers without Borders. She and a number of others will spend two weeks rebuilding a water system for a small remote village. She will be packing a Vic Super Tinker for her trip. She knows a good tool when it's needed.

On a totally unrelated note. Last week was a very bad week here. A photo of my part-time job. I obviously didn't take the photo. I was a bit busy. But it's one of the best I've seen published so far.

Hello All,
This is my first post here but I have been an avid reader for quite some time. Like many of you, I have been on the search for the perfect EDC combo. This includes knives, tools, flashlights and other prep gear. I have also fallen in love with traditional slip joint knives and wanted to make sure to keep one in my EDC gear. I have gone through a few knives including case sod buster jr cv, mini muskrat cv, humpback whittler ss, and a Boker copperhead 1075 to name a few. I used to be a more tactical guy with my ritter mini-grip and a couple similar knives but I have steered away from those kind of knives. I am also completely addicted to SAKs and own at least a dozen at the current moment. I am a office type worker but a DIY and outdoors guy that wanted an EDC setup that would cover as much of my bases as possible without dragging my pants down. Dare I say, I think I found my setup! My Case Ruger red g-10 peanut arrived today. I am in love. I have been looking for a people friendly knife that I can use anywhere I go and never get a bad reaction. I am pairing this with my Vic Farmer which I love as well. The only thing I wanted to add to my farmer was a small blade as a back-up/people friendly blade. The peanut does this and then some. I have alse settled on the Novatac 85p as my EDC light. I know it isn't by any means the brightest but offeres everything I want in a size I like and is made here in the states.

Wow that was quite a ramble. Sorry bout that. Long story short, I have found my (for now) perfect EDC setup and I wanted to know what the other traditional guys carry besides their favorite slippy every day. Go ahead and list all your gear and what things you are happy with and what things you might want to improve in some way. Maybe we can all help each other find the perfect balance.

My pocket contents as of now:

LF - Novatac 85p and Case/Ruger red G-10 peanut
RF - Vic Farmer, copper Zippo and keys dangling from clip inside the pocket
LR - Wallet with band-aids, fire-steel, map, toothpick and electrical tape. I also carry a fisher space pen beneath the Saddleback leather wallet.
RR - Phone

Thanks for letting me ramble and I look forward to hearing about what you guys carry and what you are happy with and what you would like to improve.

Welcome to the forum. Your post has been moved to "Carl's Lounge" since the discussion of other equipment beyond traditional knives is off-topic for the forum. That is what this thread is for.

Welcome to the Traditional sub-forum, MadeInUSA! A Farmer and a Peanut makes a great combo! ;) This is what I carry:
LF - Vic Rambler & Fenix EO1 (always), car keys (carried separately) when I need 'em
RF - Vic Farmer & wallet (always)
Watch pocket - (changes daily) Traditional EDC ..... GEC Barlow today ... some days Case Peanut or Small Texas Jack or SBJ ... Buck 55 ... GEC Dogleg ... ??? :D
RR - Bandana, cotton, folded (always)
LR - Empty (always)

(Also, I think there's some threads in "Gadgets & Gear" that discuss this very topic).

Welcome MadeInUSA.

I believe I've got one of those Peanuts that you speak of:

My EDC gear is very conservative. Wallet with a Swiss Card inside, Keys with a Maratac AAA light attached, a Case Humpback Stockman and a company issued cell phone that I forgot to put in the photo.
I carry two knives but since the other gets rotated I did not include it in the photo. Today it's a GEC Barlow.

Quite so, Keith, and lots of good info to be gleaned there. Since "M.I.U." was addressing the traditional crowd I felt he might get the type of replies he was looking for over here. Great suggestion, however.

That's the one! I haven't seen much talk about the red g-10 case/ruger line but I find it very attractive. I love stag and all kinds of jigged bone but wanted something I could carry everyday without fear of cracking a scale. The g-10 should hold up well in my pocket with the HAIII light.

I love the Case / Rugers! I bought this Case Mako from New Graham last year and I've seen it referred to as "Ruger Red" although it has no Ruger markings. I wish Case made more knives in red g10.

Well, that's a bald-faced lie but I love ya for it all the same. :p

Thanks Elliott. I have read a lot of threads about EDC gear but they seem to be mostly driven by the more tactical kind of guys. I have been inspired by so many of JackKnife's storys about his dad's case peanut, p-38 and sears 4-way screwdriver that I wanted to share my take on the modern traditional EDC. I was really hoping to get a good discussion going amungst the traditional guys to see what their thoughts were on the matter. Thank you everyone for the warm welcome to the forum. I am seeing why everyone says you guys are the nicest bunch.

Checking in for our friends in Japan.

Wrote the Tozaki's and Ryu early yesterday morning and am thrilled to hear that Yuko, Shigeru and Ryu are safe.

Anyone heard from chinpo? A few of us are starting to get concerned.
