"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

That's the one! I haven't seen much talk about the red g-10 case/ruger line but I find it very attractive. I love stag and all kinds of jigged bone but wanted something I could carry everyday without fear of cracking a scale. The g-10 should hold up well in my pocket with the HAIII light.

Welcome MadeInUSA.

I believe I've got one of those Peanuts that you speak of:

Nice peanut.

It would be hard to mislay that knife, or loose it. I have to admit, as much as I love stag and bone, there's a nice practical side to synthetic scales. My own yella handle knives have that easy to spot look that I've come to love as an old fart. Last year I was doing some yard work laying pine bark mulch around, and I set down my chestnut peanut, and it took me a bit to find it again. Blended right in with the color of the mulch. Needless to say, when I'm working outdoors on the yard, and opening bags of mulch, top soil, sand, or whatever, I use my yella peanut, or one of my nice red sak's. I too love my sak's, it they ain't too fat. One or two layers only. I remember my dad teaching me to always when getting up from a spot where I was sitting, to always look back to see if anything fell out of my pockets. To always, allways look back at where you're leaving from. Surprising how just a little splash of color stands out.

I also find that the small pocket flashlight is sometimes used as much as my pocket knife. Surprising how handy a little lite that you can hold in your mouth, while looking for that something on a basement shelf.

Carl.

Siting here in comfort, watching the on the TV the horrible devastation in Japan, gives me some thoughts. Mother nature can be a holy terror when on a rampage, and can strike so fast, with little or no warning. It makes me think back to the old guys who I knew growing up. The guys who always had that stuff on them, to cut, make fire, signal, or just to see. A knife, a small flashlight, some means to make a fire to keep warm, and give them hope. It takes very little to keep going, but so many these days put all their faith in their smart phone. We live in such a techno society these days, but mother nature can wipe that out with a sudden earthquake, a hurricane, twister, and leave us worse off than some neanderthal. At least the neanderthal knew how to make a fire, make a spear, and survive. Food for thought there.

Maybe start making sure I keep a tin of some stuff like dad and his cronies did.

Carl.

Adam (Chinpo on BFC) lives in Sendai one of the hardest hit areas. Please keep him, his family and friends in your thoughts.

I have also tried contacting Adam by email and PM but no reply yet. Understandable considering how hard Sendai was hit.

I would also ask that we all pray for our friend and his loved ones.

Thank you.

My thoughts are with all of our comrades in harms way...

Thank you.

He was last on on the 10th, I hope all of our members that are in that area are okay. Several of my buddies and family have family over there. With the threat of meltdowns at several plants, it looks like it is just getting worse.

Happy birthday! I am not far behind as I will also be 45 in a couple of weeks.

Checking in for our friends in Japan.

Wrote the Tozaki's and Ryu early yesterday morning and am thrilled to hear that Yuko, Shigeru and Ryu are safe.

Anyone heard from chinpo? A few of us are starting to get concerned.

I hope all is well with Chinpo and family. Every time I see photos of the damage there, it makes me speechless....

Don't forget the cover charge and the two drink minimum...;)

My boss and some of the other drivers are motorcycle nuts. They all have new dirt bikes. For some reason, they decided it would be cool to work on them in a spare office, at our main office:confused:

One particular guy has been riding for years, and is a very good mechanic. The other day I was in there and they were frantically looking for a sharp knife to cut a portion of the grips off with.

The knives they pulled from their pockets, woldn't slice butter if they tried. The few they found in the drawers were in the same condition...

I asked them, will this work ? I had pulled my Buck 301 from pocket. I pulled the sheepsfoot blade out and handed it to him. They both looked at the knife like they had never seen a slip joint before. Billy tested the blade and said, OMG this ithing is sharp... He started doing the cutting he had at hand, and was in disbelief. I can't believe how good this little knife cuts. I actually have to be careful not to cut myself with it.

When he was finished, he asked where he could get one, and if I would keep it sharp for him :D
