"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Spam is very big in Hawaii also.

Yeah, I read that :) When I was a kid, we were so poor we didn't even have REAL Spam, same at school, they served this hideous stuff that was nicknamed 'pink lint' - not by the kids, but by the people who served it! :D

I still get the hankering for Spam now and then. My wife and I were at Costco the other day and they had a real deal on a huge package of Spam tins. My wife gave me one of her "Over my dead body" looks and I kept on walking....

LOL! :D Sometimes when you taste food you haven't tried for a long time, it doesn't live up to expectations. When I was a kid, a range of tinned meatballs was launched here. Some kids I played with down the road lived on these things, and I was quite envious of them, but my mother would never buy them. I remember trying them as an adult, and they were like dog-food! :D

I get the same thing from Karen! I love a couplel eggs sunny side up, with some nice slices of Spam fried to a nice golden brown and slightly crispy.:thumbup::thumbup::thumb up:

Toss in a well made Bloody Mary and ti's the perfect start to a day!

Someone had to do it.:D
Janette being a Pommy herself (as am I ) puts a bit of Keens Curry Powder in ye olde beans.YuM.
Are we to take it that the campfire scene from Blazing saddles would not make it past the mods? Not surprising really. It disgusts me EVERY single time I watch it.

Well I was on the shopping mission today and I saw Heinz BBQ beans. might have to try.
Anyone remember the spam ad?
"Spiced ham? Yes Ma'am Spam"
I also think the pink lint mentioned earlier is not actual SPAM (TM REG.) but in fact canned Corned Beef. It is definitely among the "I used to like it as a kid when we were poor/thrifty but these days I would not feed it to a dog" category of olden day foods.

I've tried the Heinz BBQ beans, thought they were quite nice

The 'pink lint' at our school came in a large round catering tin, and was like thick, cheap 'luncheon meat' after it had been sliced. They used to batter and deep-fry it, and then list it as 'Spam Fritters, but it certainly wasn't Spam. Ugh! No wonder British school dinners had such a bad reputation! :barf:

I was brought to the Antipodes in 1972 almost 43 years ago to the day -I think it was the 7th-we left when I was 7 and I turn 8 in October- 51 to be precise:D I doubt my mental capacity has evolved that much anyway so not to worry..
I can still smell the school dinners now as I type-and oh yummy what about semolina?
It could be worse. In fact it did get worse. Just when young 8 yo meako was feeling like it was safe to go back for school supplied meals I was introduced to "the pie" . A staple "aussie" food the meat pie is iconic in Australian culture. Most pies I buy nowadays are delicious gourmet treats with rich ,wholesome ingredients. They come with a massive variety of yumptious fillings ranging from prime kangaroo fillet to wagyu beef or a plain beef n guinness. Free range Chicken ,lamb with blue cheese, and the Tasmanian Scallop(a shellfish) feature in the latter day pie. Scrummoh !
None of this however featured in the factory made pies of the school canteen in the 1970s.No.What we had could be variously described as gristle, fat, crap, rats tails or human fingers.
(Everyone knows someone who knew someone whose mate knew a guy whos brother found a rat skull in his pie)
The best that can be said about them was that were sometimes hot ,well warm...ish.Sometimes cold -mainly on the cold Winter days-which is the saving grace for young Meako because it never gets as cold here as it did in Nottingham.
thanks for listening.

what about semolina?

I actually gagged just reading that word! :barf: :D

thanks for listening.

A pleasure mate  Those were grim times for sure, and to make matters worse, my mother was a terrible cook (and my father a lazy $%£&@)! It took me a long time to realise what the phrase 'just like mother makes' actually meant! :D The only thing I did like at school was 'cheese pie', quite an odd thing really, but at least it wasn't full of bits of eyeball, hair, and gristle! :barf: It seemed to be unique to the British school menu of the time, as I've never seen it anywhere else.

"I'll 'ave your Spam, I love it!" :D

I can't handle Spam since an overload of it in 'Nam. Never had it as a kid. Mom did fix rice and I didn't care for it growing up. Then in 'Nam, a cost of being in Base Camp mostly was Spam and Rice everytime we turned around it seemed. It made it a treat to eat C rations.

Don

Spam.
Sometimes I get the urge for it and fry some up...Never tried grilling it..Hmmm!!:)

Fried Span, mayonnaise, sliced white onion, on white bread makes a great sandwich. We get individually wrapped slices of Spam here so you don't have to use a whole can just to make one or two sandwiches. Peanut butter on spam is pretty good too - no bread, no mayo, no onion - just spam with some peanut butter spread on it.

I haven't had it for decades, but many years ago (in the Middle East), I used to enjoy corned beef and onions fried in olive oi. Crack an egg over the top while frying and you have a feast! ;)

In Germany we know Spam as "Büchsenfleisch" or "Dosenfleisch" is also wellknown. I know it in two forms, one is the spam, known per se; the other one is red spam. Made as some kind of bloodsausage. And it keeps until eternity. I have two of these cans at work - so to say as a last resort when I forgot meal at home.

I like it as it is - with some bread and salt and pepper. Never tried it somehow other.

A few years ago, an ex-wife and I went along with another couple camping one weekend. An easy camping meal the other lady said she was making was "Treat" (made by the same people as Spam) cubed up and mixed in with Mac & Cheese. With my dislike for Spam I though Oh No!!! to myself. Turned out it was very good. Just glad it wasn't Spam instead. :highly_amused:
