"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Winter's finally here in Central New York. We took a walk in the woods today. The sun was shining and the temp was about 25 degrees F or so. The lake surface was frozen but not enough to walk on it yet.

We came across a couple of Pileated Woodpeckers that were having a dispute. It definitely wasn't courting they were doing. I didn't want to see any dead woodpeckers so I broke it up.

Wow! Fantastic photos Gary! I absolutely love Pileated Woodpeckers...wish I could find one around here. We supposedly have them but I've yet to spot one.

Even during your time away, to what should have been a tranquil walk in the woods you're called upon to break up a squabble. Must be your lot in life Gary. :D:)
I'm glad you were there and here.

James, I was thinking the same thing myself! Thanks!

Thanks guys. I see the Pileated Woodpeckers pretty often, even now and then at my backyard feeders. I've never seen a confrontation like this one. They were seriously going after each other. Quite an experience to witness.

Gary, that must have been a rather bizarre encounter! I've got a Pileated around here that I have managed to see a few times, but it always flees whenever I can get a really good look at it. I hear it more often than see it...that is a great shot!

LOL! :D Fantastic photos Gary

I once had to separate two chameleons! Normally they move really slowly and gently, but these two were going at it like a couple of tigers!

My Case Barlow is back. I found it between the cushion and arm of my couch. Needless to say I am a happy camper.

Good deal, Randy!! :D:thumbup::D Along with Drew's Northwoods that some honest soul turned in at the store where Drew lost it, that makes TWO prodigal knives returning in the past couple of days!:cool: (Could my Sunday-go-to-meeting pearl pen knife that's been gone for almost 50 years be the next one to reappear???)

Really cool pic of the woodpeckers! I hear them often in my woods, but only rarely see them.

So why is it when I'm working the weather is beautiful and then when the weekend rolls around its cold, grey, and stormy? At least this fine Arkansas weather isn't giving us twisty winds. Looks like I'll be inside touching up some edges and applying a little Flitz this weekend.

Tonight after the reappearance of my 74 Case Barlow I decided to count my knives. Now I knew I had gifted a lot of knives through the Holiday season some to friends, some to family members and some to forum members. I am really glad to have been able to do this because I truly enjoy gifting knives almost as much as buying knives for myself. Anyway my final count was 127 knives, now to most people (including my wife) that's a stupid amount of knives to own. My thoughts however, were that's not enough I need more. So my dilemma is that I had resolved to only spend $100 or less per month this year on knives and I announced this to my wife (dumb thing to do). Now I would really like to have 200 knives by the first of the year but with a total budget of $1200 for 73 knives, well that's only $16.44 per knife and with my heart set on a Todd Davidson you can see that budget is shot. I do have money sitting in my Paypal account but that is earmarked for a project that Glennbad is working on for me. Now for years I played guitar in working bands and have a ton of PA gear and a couple of guitars I no longer have use for so I decided to sell it all to fund my knife purchasing without using any additional "household" monies and problem solved. Now my question is has anyone else sold off the spoils of an ex hobby to fund their knife addiction and if so please tell us your stories I believe it would make for some great reading and a lot of folks here on the porch would enjoy it.
