"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

well the quick pick for 10 didnt work out, the ones i picked out did better, but not much, one of the games i got 2 numbers but no powerball, and a different game i got the powerball only. so i guess terrible return on investment. shoulda just saved that $30 bucks for knives

My mother was visiting last week, and we were talking about what we would do if we won. It's fun to daydream about, so I bought a ticket. As long as you think of it like throwing a dollar in a wishing well, and not like a financial investment, it's harmless. It was in the news so much, I think folks that don't usually play bought one just to be part of the cultural event.

Oh well, I didn't win, so back to work........:D

Well, I bought one too. I was in the grocery store the other day and there was no lotto line so I picked one up.

Needless to say I won't be buying up every Tony Bose knife I can find......bummer. :D

Even if you didn't win the Powerball take your ticket to a Powerball retailer and have them run it through their machine. You never know what you may have won - i.e. the Powerball number is good for a $4.00 payoff and even one number that is not the Powerball number may be worth two bucks or so.

yeah i think thats all i get back, just $4

If anyone is near the St. Louis area there is a knife show January 30 - 31st at Carpenters Hall. Here is a link to a thread about it in Community: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...w-2016-SAINT-LOUIS-MO?p=15623203#post15623203

I attended last year and there were a lot of Traditionals for sale, I picked up an AG Russell premium scout I had been seeking at the show. There were custom makers, dealers, and individual sellers in attendance. Bladeforums members are planning to meet by the concession area at 11:00 Saturday.

That's the way I look at it. It was worth the $10 to spend some time with my wife daydreaming about what we would do. It's still a heck of a lot cheaper than going to the movies to find out about somebody else's dreams, and a better conversation to boot. ;)

I was able to daydream about it without buying a ticket. Saved a couple of bucks, still got to daydream. This particular jackpot was way too big. I wouldn't want to win it when it's 1.5 billion. Too much attention. Give me a nice, simple, non-newsworthy jackpot of about 30 to 50 million. Enough to erase money worries for us and various family members, without enabling drastic lifestyle changes.

When they say "all your dreams will come true " and You've got to be in it to win it" etc etc " on the OZ Lotto and Powerball commercials I always think "you have to be in it to lose it as well" .
My gold coin change goes into my knife tin and when that's full roughly every couple of months depending on how diligent I am;) .Guess what? I use it to patch up holes in the credit card that get made by new knives.
I guess I'm not a gambler.
I certainly know that the hundreds of dollars I put into lotto as part of work syndicates over the last 30 years yielded nothing but the occasional $20 win which when divided between the 9 syndo members amounted to zilch because the majority vote puts it back on for next week.
Sorry

We've had it here for over 20 years, but I've never played, I genuinely wouldn't know how to :o

I buy one occasionally at the urging of my other half. The odd thing is, I have genuine concerns about winning a jackpot (the two of us argue about this often). I know it might be a pessimistic view but I'm quite sure that winning such a ludicrously obscene amount of money would significantly alter our relationship with just about every single person I know as well as with each other, and probably not for the better. I'd much rather a little extra that would vanish my mortgage.

I know the chances are miniscule, but I know what you mean, the prizes are so absolutely vast. My grandad won the football pools twice, but a relatively small amount, one of my aunties got a wedding out of the larger win, and we all got nice Xmas presents (I thought Santa had gone to the wrong house!). My dad won once when he was first married, went out and bought everyone presents, and then found out the win was so small he was out of pocket! :D

I would get just as much enjoyment out of setting a dollar bill on fire and letting it burn :)

LOL! :D Hey, I have a dollar bill somewhere! On second thoughts, with my luck, I'd probably burn the house down! :D

Howdy folks. I posted this in another place but after visiting the place shown below, I decided that the traditional crowd might appreciate this more and it fits this thread better anyway.

I've been on a business trip in Charlotte, NC for almost two weeks. I've come across a couple interesting things. I went by the race tracks and Hendrick's race shops. Boring, business related stuff.

The absolute coolest place I've found is this one:

Yesterday, I stopped by on my way to the shop for a couple photos. I swung back by around lunch time to go inside but, wouldn't you know it, they're closed on Sunday and Wednesday. I looked inside and it is a real General Store. Mostly hardware and a lot of new stuff but there are some old items here and there.

I did some looking on line and it turns out, the place was used as a set for a Cinemax television show called Banshee. You can see it at the 10 second mark of this trailer:

Anyway, I got a break at work this morning so I went by to see what was on the inside.

Almost all of my expectations were met and then some. It was better than Disneyworld (at least to me it was :D)

I have photos of the inside and more to tell. I'll be back in a bit.

It's true, I buy one from time to time (maybe once a month at most) I usually get a "scratch-off" as the prizes are smaller, but the odds are better. I'm poor enough that it wouldn't take a million dollars to change my life. :)

It's an interesting thought exercise to be sure. "What would you do if you won $1.5B?" I don't know. I have some ideas, but you never know.

I do savor the prospect of being able to do absolutely whatever I wanted. Except being president of course, and I'm not interested. How many people do you know can honestly say that life, with all its myriad choices, is fully open to him? I don't know anyone. Of course I probably wouldn't get anything done, being overwhelmed by paralysis by analysis.

What is certain is that winning would be a secret, shared only between my wife and I. I'd set up a privately owned corporation to claim the ticket, which in turn is owned by another corporation, and then another, with the family trust the owner and various members as beneficiaries. Oh I'm sure that a determined person could figure it out, but it won't be easy. I don't think I'd even tell my daughter, at least until she's matured and long past her formative years. She'll know she's upper middle class of course, but I don't want her growing up knowing that she's obscenely wealthy.

Oh, wow-- I am looking forward to your next post. :)

From the trailer it looks like they changed it from a general store to a forge in the show. Curious.

I'm with Sarah in that I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for your followup post. Very cool indeed.

Yep, that's a cool looking store, Rupestris, and I can't wait to read about how "[a]lmost all of your expectations were met and then some".:eek:;)

As for the lottery, my attitude is similar to meako's. I satisfy my "gambling itch" by purchasing slip joints online!:D
