"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Wow, quite a nice package of little goodies Jack! I think I need to give some things away, but it depends on how much I'm getting on my next paycheck.

Quite simply, I don't need to have knives in my collection that I never use. I don't get to enjoy them, nor does anyone else, so I see no benefit only missed opportunity to enjoy it.
I traded my most valuable knife away recently and am now using the heck out of my new sowbelly. I think the sowbelly, being a Select series from Case, would catch a prettier penny but that doesn't matter because I'm using it all the time.
I have come to the conclusion that I must finally trade for, beg for, or buy a trapper so that I can try out having two big blades. I'll chop the spey into a sheepsfoot, and see how it works for me. It's one of the few major patterns I have yet to try, and a beefy one could be my new favorite.

Unless I have the fortune of running into this big bone beauty at the flea market again, that is.

That's a 53 Cuban for comparison.

ooo! i was so close! thanks any way Jack Black

Thanks for having a go sir :)

Jack what is that tiny tiny knife on the lower right?

It's the smallest knife I've ever seen Randy, a market trader I know spotted it in a box of junk, and gave it to me. How he spotted it, I'll never know! :) I think it was made by the faerie folk! :D

A very sensible approach Connor

That's some nice old bone

Thanks Mr K :) Those are beautiful, fantastic work

My grandad used to make tiny spitfire out of ha'pennies. I'll have to take a pic of mine

I will say the spey blade is becoming very nice for food, but only in a long length. My Case sowbelly is proving quite nice for that, and has freed up the clip for regular cutting duties. Normally I use the main clip on stockmen for food only, and it has its drawbacks being on the sidelines for everything else.

The big spey is one of the reasons I really love my jumbo Camillus trapper:

Queen offers a variant on their #19 trapper, that ACSB sure is beautiful:

Or you can seek out one of those big Case granddaddy Barlows, they occasionally come with The Mother Of All Spey Blades as a secondary:

As for stockmen, I really do like my CV #75 for cutting food, it's probably my most versatile carry knife:

I don't think I have any preference with blade count. I find plenty of opportunities to carry my thin single-blade or single-spring knives, but I almost always have a multi-blade on me as well. It's more about how the knives complement each other, or if I just can't resist how one looks/feels/makes me feel carrying it.

I hope none minds, I read this in the daily carry thread but thought I'd reply here. Sounds like a truly hard week. God bless.

Yes indeed. TsarBomba, I'm so sorry for the loss of your cat. Plus the piling on of work stress, health stress, sports team stress. (I confess I don't quite get the last one. :) ) Be sure to take care of yourself.

Oh no, I was going to try to email Tsar yesterday and then got caught up in stuff. Im very sorry to hear about a pet passsing.
Kind thoughts for those needing them from me.

Thank you very kindly Paul, Rachel and Connor. Your thoughts are very much appreciated. I'm slowly emerging from the doldrums, hoping to feel normal again after some rest this weekend.

Please pray for my uncle, it looks like hospice is the next step for him. I can't say the things I'd like to say about cancer, here. Our hopes are up for him, but his body is rejecting treatment. Your prayers are appreciated, I haven't given up. Most importantly, neither has he.

My deepest sympathies for your uncle and your family. I hope he turns it around and beats this thing.

I recognize the words as English but I still can't make heads or tails out of this! ;) :D

LOL! It doesn't help that there's a couple of typos in there! :D  Sorry, think I need a new keyboard! :o

Hi Jack. I don't mean to get "off topic" :) but I picked these up yesterday and you and Codger are the first people I thought about.

Those are both fine pieces. I especially like the Golden Spike. Based on the tang stamp of the Spike, it was made sometime between 1973 and 2004. Hang on to that. I have no information on the razor.

Thanks. I've been in a bit of a drought lately. I was happy to find them. I appreciate the info.

Ohhhhh...a tiny Spitfire from a ha'penny! Gotcha. Wonder if I could make a tiny Raptor from a penny (which, along with our storied nickel, have been more expensive to produce than their face value for some time now).

I think that would be "getting on topic" which would be off-topic in the lounge which is off-topic so off-topic would be on-topic and on-topic would be off-topic... My head hurts.

LOL! :D  Lovely pieces. I particularly like the razor. That looks like it might be made from whale baleen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baleen), like one I have gifted to me by a kind member here. I'm just about to rush out of the house now GM, but I'll get back to you later if that's OK

LOL! Got to be worth a try! :) Like a lot of folks of his generation, my grandfather was always making things. He had a lovely old brass Spitfire he'd made during WW2, one of many he'd made. It was much more polished and detailed than the one I have, which was made in the 70's. I think he left it looking rough so that me and my brother and sister (who also got one) could see they were made out of a coin :)

Hi Jack, Off topic, you see what I did There? :D

Yep! :D

I live in the most blooded county in America. Fredericksburg, Salem Church, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, the Slaughter Pen, etc.

At the end of my street was one of the largest Confederate encampments, and my little neighborhood was the site of a refugee camp from residents fleeing Fredericksburg.

Gasman I understand about being in a drought. I not only love knives but also love guitars and found a couple of pretty pricey ones recently that I just had to have. So I made the decision to sell knives and some other things to fund the purchases. I was looking at my knives just this evening and realized I have sold all of my nice knives. Only one GEC left and a few other decent slipjoints and must say I was a little sad by the realization. So I guess I will suck it up and start rebuilding my collection. I truly have champagne taste on a beer budget

Hi GM,

Sorry for the slow reply, I was out most of yesterday. Would it be possible for you to take a clearer photo of the handle of your razor, and also of any markings on the box? Also another of the tang?
