Leghog did you make this?

Thanks for the kind words guy's.

GT I am going to try to rebuild my collection with some kind of order to it this time. I'm not sure exactly how because there are so many different ways to go with traditional knives. I just counted and I still have 83 knives left  and two more fine guitars added to my collection I purchased with the money from the sell off along with some PA gear I sold. I hated to sell my knives but I dropped nearly eight grand on the guitars and for some odd reason my wife became very unhappy with me. :D Three knives I know I'm going to buy are a Mnandi another Charlie Mike and a Todd Davidson. I will post pictures as my wallet shrinks.:D

a Mnandi? very classy Randy. for some reason i could never justify buying any of Mr.Reeves' knives. Almost decided on a semicustom, but ferrom forge stopped taking orders. Single blades!! Get more single blades!

Good to see everyone is doing well atm, at least better than they were for some (good thoughts still headed to all of you from me).

I decided to clean up a knife for a girl I'm friends with who is graduating, and ran into a 1/2" long, painted problem: Nails.
No way could you open a slipjoint with long nails, without risking breakage. So I went back to the workbench, put all my knives out, and thought for a long time.
It wasn't until I started opening knives that I realized I have never used the nail notch on my opinel, and that I could easily buy one and modify it, so I went to a cool small business in my city that I bought my first opi from, and bought a No. 6 Inox.

Some sketching, taping paper to my nails to see how I could manipulate them if I had long nails, and some days of resting on the problem later, and I have a solution.

Currently it is drying outside, so I cannot take pics to show its features, but tomorrow I'll show my long lady nail friendly Opinel. It's been pretty interesting to design it, as it is so specialized.

Now I realize that I need to start buying fixer uppers to prepare for the graduation season, and get to work!

Intriguing! I can't wait to see it.

Great old razor, GasMan1! Thanks for the photos and it would be neat to have it put back into service! I don't know about baleen, but horn can be eaten by bugs. That damage on the handle--does it look like bugs or something else? If bugs, that might indicate horn.

As always, you are a fount of knowledge, Jack, and master of many trades! Thanks for posting that shell casing candle--what a terrific example of "swords into plowshares", and solemn reminder of WWI. During the WWI Centennary years, I've read Tuchman's "The Guns of August", Fussel's "The Great War and Modern Memory", and am almost through Keegan's "The First World War". I have newfound respect for the suffering and privations of those dark years, and the individual acts of heroism against impossible odds.

the answer to that is switch blade, but some how i dont think the legalities work out

Aye, a switchblade would work, but not be very traditional. Unless I could score an old Schrade, but I'd probably keep it :D.

So I'm guessing an Opinel with an easy-open notch?

I work with my hands so much, I can't imagine purposely hobbling myself with long nails.

Thanks Robb. I really don't know what caused the damage to the handle. I thought it looked unusual but never thought it could be bugs.

Yes. Apparently, horn can get et by bugs.
Here's a nice little knife that got chewed on: :(

Yes but this young lady is going to have those nails attached to Connor's arm, as in "candy" as he shows out on the town. Can't risk breakin' them to cut a thread off the little black dress! :p :D

That is horrific and it prompted me to go check on my horn-handled knives to make sure no critters had B&E'd their way into a free snack. :o

You're very kind my friend, that sounds like very interesting reading, there are some incredible stories from that war

Rodents will also nibble horn, leather, and presumably baleen if they get a chance  Some rotten creature made a mess of this one :grumpy:

I don't particularly collect straight razors, but I have a few, will have to take some pics

To disquiet the yokes and pokes, I present the long nail opi.
It still needs more stain and then tung oil.

Note how the ramps in are on different sides, this is to let you use thumb and forefinger to open without any chance of nails getting in the way.

I like that. What is it, about a No.5? My own mods have been more restrained, but I can see how your thumb and finger would lay in there. How does it affect the feel when you hold it for use?

Darkening the handle is something I haven't tried yet, but I really want to dunk one in beet juice. I have this idea it would look really good, but it could just as easily be quite ugly.

It is a 6 with the ring off, I'm still working on that. It actually really feels nice in hand, I lock my ring finger on it for a 4 finger grip. I didnt take off the butt too much because I wanted to have room for the pinkie. Staining is very tough, I need to sand this down with 80 grit again and stain a few more times.

I love a dirty looking opinel myself, and mine is just that.

Good looking job Connor  I'm sure that young lady will be very happy.

Rachel you hit the "nail" on the head with that guess. :D

EXTREMELY nice knife that one. Tip bolsters mmmhh:thumbup:

But, that doesn't look much like insect damage to me, more like canine or feline chompings:eek::D:D

Been wondering about this horn boring by weevils/beetles. I don't think they'd attack horn on a knife unless it were left laying about in some warm dark drawer for years on end. I rather suspect they'd attack the horn in storage before it gets put on a knife, the cutler might have put it there as a blemish type thing. I say this, as you don't seem to hear of horn being attacked on knives these days, only stories of it from long ago. I have this beaker/cup on my desk which I keep pens in which is made out of a straight section of blonde horn. Been in the family beyond living memory...and it's always had a few bore holes near the top, they look like they went to work when the cow was alive and eating:eek:

I suppose a puppy could have teethed on it.

That's a good candidate to have recovered in some nice Ebony Blackwood Rachel.

Not a bad idea, Bob. Though I really like how well the bar shield is fit, and that bit of light feathering- just enough to know it's real horn. When I got it, someone joked that it would be the new fashion: "soup-bone horn" :D

Yes, I agree Rachel, that feathering is a quality touch. It's the sort of knife my cat might have a go at:eek: Caught her playing 'football' with one of my knives she'd pulled down, She ran off with it in her jaws !:D That was a lightweight Shadow horn knife too....
