"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I used to trout fish a lot but the bugs drove me nuts. I found a big ole cheap Tampa Nugget was the best bug repellant I have ever used. :D Seriously though I know a lot of folks enjoy a good cigar but when I quit cigarettes in 82 something changed in me and I can no longer be around any kind of tobacco smoke it's almost like an allergy. My eyes water my nose runs and I just can't take it. I do however miss a good cigar sometimes but even more so a nice pipe.

I'm 11 months in after quitting, and I still have a jar of pipe tobacco. I can't stand burning tobacco anymore, but some days... Man it's great to open that jar and take a big whiff!

I resemble that remark. I quit smoking a pipe ~30 years ago. I still have my pipes. Every once in a while I still take one out, smell it and fondle it. Weird.

Sounds familiar. I do the same thing.

thats gotta be drying out no? pipe tobacco has to be kept a certain way if i remember correctly. i used to just buy the one oz in a ziplock bag at a time. it would last for a bit. not a huge pipe smoker, not a huge smoker in general just run the gamut despite knowing the evils

It's probably dried out a bit. Still smells good though. I have no plans of smoking it. I have it in a canning jar, and it's actually not as dry as you'd think after almost a year in there.

I used to love the smell of pipe tobacco and I always put a slice of apple in my pouch. Don't know if it's true or not but had always heard it kept the tobacco moist and fresh.

I remember as a kid, my youngest uncle got a pair of Doc Martens, and my father boasted about bulling them for him. Typical of my father, he spent 4 hours on one boot, bulling it to a glass-like shine, then told my uncle we had to get off, and he'd have to do the other boot himself. I can still see the poor lad's face! :( ;) :D

Thank you for that story, Jack. I read it a few hours ago and am still chuckling about it. :)

Thanks Greg, it was somewhat typical of my dad  :D

I quit smoking in 1978, but on the increasingly rare occasions I come across an old fashioned tobacconist, I can never resist going in for a look around. I usually find something I can buy (pipe-cleaners for my knives, shaving cream, snuff for Andi, etc)! :D

In granddaughter Emy's fingerprint in sterling silver. Hangs on an adjustable leather loop around my neck.

I have tobaks in mason jars that are 9 years old as some tobaks are better aged. The trick is to not break the seal, and when you do to smoke it vs trying to cellar it any longer. When I break open a new tin or jar, my tobaks remain moist enough that I still have to lay out a couple of days supply to dry a bit. Too moist is just as bad as too dry, excepting you can dry much easier than remoisten.

no way randy, quick age test, how do you type, with two fingers looking for letters? :D

1 finger guessing at letters.
