"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Donna and I took off to NW Arkansas for the weekend to check out Crystal Bridges Museum, and stop by AG Russell's store. The museum was packed and fantastic, but Mr Russell gave his employees the weekend off for the holiday. Disappointing, but it's good to see an employer treating his employees well. Driving back roads on the way home did reveal a treasure though. Donna found a flea market that had a nice little box from Amish country. It needs a little love, but I think part of my collection will be happy with its new home. Not bad for $60

I'd a jumped on that too. Nice find for 60 bucks.

Great find, btmccutcheon! Glad to hear you enjoyed Crystal Bridges. It was built shortly after we moved away from NWArk, but we've been a few times on trips back home. There are usually some pretty interesting exhibits there, and the museum itself it pretty stunning. Sorry to hear AG Russell's was closed.

Thanks guys! I couldn't believe it when I saw it, and it was marked for $75. Fortunately, I also saw a sign posted in the store concerning "The Rules of Haggling". I mentioned I saw the sign to the shop keep and she smiled. I smiled back and and asked "Shall we get started?". She told me she had planned on taking it to War Eagle where she knew she could get a lot more for it. I was tickled she let it go for what she did. All it needs is a little sanding, some stain, a new chain for the lid and polish on the brass. I might put in some new felt if I can't get the current as clean as i'd like. Honestly, it's in great shape as it is.

I don't need no Gerstner now.

Not sure. It looks like some pieces of it may be particleboard with an oak veneer. But, there is a lot of solid wood in there too. I'm thinking of eventually using it to help with a pattern to build at least one by hand. That's a ways away though.

I think I shared this a while back in a different thread, but I went slightly more "industrial" with my knife storage.

Also a flea market find. It actually works pretty well for the task. I lined the drawers, and each one holds 10-12 traditional knives (give or take a few, depending on the size). Those photos are from a while back, as the top now has a cigar box for temporary placement of the knives I've been carrying recently. (Also, the top of the cabinet, the table top around it and the floor underneath are rarely as neat/tidy as those older pictures. :D)

(I was using some of the bottom drawers for storing GEC tubes and boxes for other knives, but the tubes started taking over, so they got kicked out.)

Carl, glad the news was good, Bob, you and yours are in my thoughts and prayers every day. I have much respect for you, ever since I was a kid I always wished it was possible to share the burden of an illness amongst the entire world population, if everyone was a little sick we'd all live long happy lives.

This place can be a refuge for me when I'm feelin' bad and I'm sure many others feel the same. Thanks to all of you who make the porch a place to come and just hang out with friends talkin' about love life and the things we all like... knives.

Have a good night folks.

I completely agree Ted. I come to the porch knowing that people here tend to be supportive regardless. The show of friendship people have for each other here is fantastic.

My wee car died. A 16yo Renault. So we are a one car family again which sucks a little. But the sun is still shining so it's not too bad. Have a good day everybody.

We're sharin' my truck with our daughter, she brokered a deal with my buddy to fix her car in exchange for cookin' at his Labor Day picnic because of my shoulder I haven't been able to work on it so we share my truck, I feel your pain. ;)

Saw this on BF on a knife page I frequent. Thought you all might enjoy it.

Oddly enough, my walloping big 16-yr old Isuzu Trooper is temporarily also kaput with a bum transmission...again. Got the transmission rebuilt 3 yrs ago. It's a GM transmission. How and why the Isuzu engineers picked the same transmission used in a Jetta for 4-wd monster is beyond me. But they did, and it's the only thing on the car that's ever given me any trouble. Like you, that temporarily puts us in the 1-car family group for a spell. Hope they are both fixable.

While we are on the subject of broken cars my Granddaughter Kelsey Got her license on Saturday She works at Little Caesars Pizza part time and is a junior in high school an all around good kid so I gave her a 2003 Trailblazer I have. A great little car only 120k miles 4 wheel drive and I spent 2 grand putting a fresh paint job on it for her. Now due to the exorbitant cost for a 16 year old with a new license I opted for no collision insurance. On Wednesday her fifth day as a licensed driver she got against an utility pole while backing out of the parking lot where she works and $1700 worth of damage latter she got stopped. Now my wife drives a new Cadillac CTS 4 with the premium package I know some of you might not think so but to me a very expensive car and in all her wisdom decided Kelsey could drive her new Cadillac while hers was being repaired. Needless to say I was ecstatic when we picked up Kelsey's car from the body shop.

Perhaps this is an example of why they don't like to insure new drivers. At least it wasn't someone else's parked car (which I did when I was a young driver backing out of a parking lot once).
