That is a beaut! Congrats on the gorgeous storage case.

Wow! How thoughtful. She did great!
I have not seen many chests like that with a glass top, that is just perfect!
Congrats!

Dylan, that chest is gorgeous, and what a thoughtful gift!

You now owe her big time my friend . That is an excellent case to have .

Harry

That's a great display! Like Ramrod said, I've also never seen one with a glass display top section like that.

Thank you, guys, for the kind compliments. I let my wife know and she is absolutely thrilled. She has a knack for finding things that she is interested in, I do not know how she does it sometimes. I can look for the same item and come up empty and then let her know what I am seeking and she will usually find it within a day... I wasn't looking for a storage chest for my knives but apparently she came up with the idea when she would see the knives strewn about on my end table. She almost bought me two! I am glad she didn't, this one will take me quite some time to fill...

It's nice to have a great place to store and display 'em, Dylan! Congrats to you and compliments to your better half!!
37 degrees and raining pretty good, I am looking out across a rocky, mossy field, surrounded by Arbutus trees. This is a lovely spot to spend a New Year long weekend with my better half. A lovely Fir and Cedar house we have borrowed, is a taste of paradise!!
Several cafes and bistros on the oceanfront are the icing on the cake.
Salt Spring Island is in the heart of Rainforest country! Pics will have to wait until we get back home . . . . .sorry.

Changing the subject somewhat, my wife gifted me with something rather thoughtful and extraordinary. I love my wife dearly but she is generally more comfortable allotting me money to spend on my own gifts rather than trying to figure out what knife or gadget is currently on my short (or rather long) lists. This Christmas she went well out of her way to gift me something that I was not actively seeking but ended up wholeheartedly appreciating and loving. It is a rather large display/storage case made of oak with locking bars, a glass top, and brass furniture. I think you can make an educated guess as to what is going to be displayed/stored within... Perfect timing too, my old cigar humidor was getting particularly short on space...

A very thoughtful gift.

Congrats on the new display/storage case, Dylan; "rather thoughtful and extraordinary" is an apt description of the gift from your wife!:cool::cool::thumbsup:

My dog is snoring beside me on the couch as I dringlk a cup of joe from beans I received for Christmas from my Abominable Snowman mug on the morning of the first day of a four-day weekend. Life just doesn't get better than this.
Sounds quite satisfactory, leghog!! :thumbsup::cool::thumbsup:

I'm currently eating left-over Christmas turkey, gravy, green bean casserole, and nuked potato with a hopped beverage; I have 3 dogs sleeping nearby.:)
But earlier today, I shoveled snow, went to the dentist on treacherous streets, came home, shoveled snow, and waited until 1:30 for the refrigerator delivery guys who said they'd arrive between 9am and noon. With windchill at 7˚ F, had to take off back door of our house and its storm door to get the fridge down the back stairs when they did finally show up, and I still have to readjust the storm door that now doesn't close all the way on its own. Not a horrible day, but I've experienced that life DOES often get better than this!:rolleyes::p

Current temp 68F, predicted high 74F, low for the night 53F here in Ventura, CA
Go ahead, kick a freezing man while he's down, @marsturm!!;)

Hope your day gets better, GT! Another hopped beverage or two might help you forget about the draft coming through the door. ;):D

Charlie, it sounds as though you have a slice of Paradise there- where is this location?
That's 37 degrees Fahrenheit, Duncan. Cold and rainy, yet spectacular!! Salt Spring Island is the largest of the Gulf Islands in the waters off mainland British Columbia. Travel between islands is by Ferry boat.
A largely rural island populated by farmers, artisans and fishermen, loggers and other frontier trades, as well as well-off retirees. The geography is a reflection of the rocky mainland coast, tough and rugged to clear, with typical rainforest conifer growth, interspersed with colourful and gnarly Arbutus tree groves. We are staying in a nice house on five acres, partly cleared, courtesy of the caretaker who used to be my apprentice in my Cabinet-making business. The owner is visiting Atlanta for the winter, and we are grateful to her as well!!
Quiet and peaceful is my best description, contrasting the wonderful but hectic Christmas/family time.

A belated Merry Christmas and an early Happy New Year to everyone!

I thought I'd share a couple of photos I took over the past few weeks of things that made me think of the porch. First, from Sebastopol, California:

Unfortunately, the building did not actually contain a supply of Barlows. ;)

And, from Santa Fe, New Mexico:

The cross street, of course, is in no way intended as a commentary on our preferred style of pocket cutlery. :D

Looks like I missed out on some Christmas drama here... All for the best, I think, Christmas can be stressful enough as it is without other outside elements negatively impacting it.

@Peregrin and @knarfeng, thank you for all that you do here. You guys have a rather unenviable and oft unappreciated job. I hope that despite the undue attention you received, you had a very pleasant holiday with your friends and families and hopefully we all will do a better job at making your responsibilities here easier.

Wow! Dylan that is really a nice piece! Lucky man you are.

A Happy New Year to all my friends on the Porch! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and will be back on the porch early in 2018. The rest of today, preparing for a NY party. I'm thinking, I'll carry this tonight. Nice and elegant and probably won't scare my guests.
