"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Hi, gentlemen. I just pulled the trigger on a Buck 309. I liked its price, size, weight and reputation for sturdiness. In terms of size and width, it is between my Vic classic and tinker, so hopefully it fills a nice niche. It will be buddied up with my Vic Classic. I definitely wanted to go made in the USA on this purchase; I was tempted by a Victorinox Pocket Pal for its lower price for just a moment. Only thing I wish for is maybe carbon steel. Case's 109 pen knife is bigger, heavier and more expensive, so I passed on it. A peanut is more similar to the 309, but I'm hoping that additional 1/8" length on the 309 makes a difference. Anyhow, my purchase is based on what I've read here, especially Carl's stories and 300Bucks' pictures.

Congrats on the new knife. I'm sure you'll like it when you get it. My friend Wayne won't part from his for anything.

The size of a knife handle when it gets down to 3 inches, is a matter of not just length, but of thickness and width. Although the 2 7/8ths handle of the peanut is too small for heavy work, the almost square, boxy shape amkes it easier to grasp in a differing variety of ways. Of course, the 309 is longer, so it does give options of grip. My friend Wayne is a good size guy, about 6' 2"and 250 pounds at least. He's kind of a mix between a St. Bernard and Ned Beatty, but watching him clean out a nice big Chesapeake Bay Rockfish with his 309 is an example of game surgery at it's best.

If you haven't carried that small a knife before as an edc, it may take some time to get used to it.

Good luck.

Carl.

Guys, I was thinking about 1scooter's worn out old Case loom fixer when I came across this stockman on a giant online auction site you might have heard of. Something told me y'all might get a kick out of seeing it ...

In case you weren't sure, the item description says the knife has been carried, sharpened and used. :D

Only sharpened once? :D

I picked up the Tidioute 73 two blade trapper with chocolate bone scales, that got me started on GEC trappers, this past weekend at Scott Gossmans campout.

Is a long pull more expensive to put on a knife? That's the only reason I can figure they aren't used more.

I don't have a preference between pulls..not that I can identify my preference at least. But I do know that sometimes I see pulls that just look wrong on that particular knife (even tho I can't tell exactly why).

I like long pulls, but LOVE long match strike pulls.

From what I understand long pull (both plain and match strike) were die struck in a jig of some sort. A lot of the custom makers though it appears hand cut them in.

Guys: Don't tell anyone, but I really dislike long pulls, always have. I think it's rooted in my formative years spent drooling over the knife displays in hardware and sporting goods stores. As a kid, none of the knives I lusted over (mainly Old Timers, Cases, Bucks, Gerbers and Victorinox) had long pulls. The only ones that did were the dreaded $2.99 Imperial barlows with crimped bolsters and plastic handles. :barf: Am I the only one?

Every old timer in the displays I lusted over had carbon blades and long pulls! :p I still got the 120T I got many moons ago and lost several times.

I just cut myself with a Case Small Caliber lockback. The tru-sharp steel really takes an edge. I was touching up the edge on the small caliber, and slipped. The tip dug into my pointer finger, and I thought it didn't do anything, as it didn't hurt, and wasn't bleeding. I was wrong. The tip sliced open my finger, going in about a millemeter (guesstimation, not gonna measure), and cut it so cleanly that it didn't bleed until I pulled the flesh to make sure I hadn't cut myself. I slapped a bandaid on it, and it should be healed up in a day or two. Wow.

Well right not I am traveling for my job and have spent the past 3 days in Washinton DC. I am having dinner on the 15th floor of the J.W. Marriott and staring at the beautiful Washington Monument, and if I crank my neck around I can see the Capitol building and then if I look to the right the White House is a block away. Regardless of who might be in those buildings or how you feel about those folks the structures are just down right impressive. It really is inspirational to look and think of how much has gone into making our country so wonderful, insprational, and uplifting. I sincerly hope we can always keep it that way and sustain the law of the land. I also took an hour today and went to the Smithsonian (American History) and wandered around for about an hour just studying history etc. there is a million things to see. I'm always careful when I come here about what I carry in my pocket. This time before I leftI picked up an AG Russell funny folder. That design has been around for quite a long time and also brought my Schrade 233. I leave tomorrow morning and can't wait to get back to the rolling plains of Kansas and the prettiest girl in town. Thanks for the great reading here and the friendliness of the place. My regards to all xbxb
