"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I'm going to post a GAW tomorrow to thank this wonderful internet community for supporting me by buying knives, sending gifts and all the well wishes and support you showed me during my recent hardships. Today my SSI check came and I am completely back on my feet. Not much left over for extras but we really don't need them anyway and I have realized the last few months instead of moaning about what we don't have we should be thankful for what we do have. There were millions of people around this planet who spent the day in search of clean water and just anything they could eat. Not to say anything against any other country but for me the USA is the greatest country on earth and with just minimal effort on our part we can not only make it in life but live well. Okay I'll get off my soap box but I find myself not only happy but thankful to have landed on my feet with what is important still in tact.
Back to the GAW, the prize knife is a used Solingen made Boker Tree Brand Trapper that I found for sale at my buddy's outdoor store and he is holding it for me. I know it's not a new GEC or the like but it is in good shape and all I can afford right now. I'm sorry but this time I'll have to limit shipping to CONUS only but it would be a honor to me to see as many of you that will participate. I really hope a lot of you participate and thank you again for being the character of people you are.

Although I haven't been here long enough to say it for myself--not knowing your situation from the beginning--I have witnessed how folks have responded to getting back on your feet. I think you could give away a butter knife and folks here would be glad to have it from you, knowing that you're back on your feet.

Living in suburbia I use a butter knife FAR more often than any of my slipjoints, hahaha.

I actually used my #35 chuchill to spread some butter on my bread at dinner tonight. I must say that a butter knife would have done a better job!

Randy, you are incredible. To be able to step back, analyze, and come away from your situation with the perspective you have is admirable and praise worthy. I knew you were a good egg before all of this unfolded, but you are clearly an absolutely awesome human to all that have witnessed. Much love to you my friend. I'm stoked for you.

The longer I live, the more plainly I understand that if you have a roof over your head, clothes, food and drink, and family members who love you, then you have much for which to be thankful. All of the other stuff is just that - stuff.

Best wishes to all our Texan members

Wow Jack I agree there is something about that knife is just extraordinary. One of the things that attracts me to knives is how in the hands of a true craftsman a chunk of metal and a section of antler or wood or what ever material can be fashioned into a beautiful, useful tool that can last for generations. I love old knives and when ever I acquire one I like to think about the person or persons that made it, those that owned it, what all it was used for and all the places it has been. I guess I'm a bit crazy and don't get me wrong I love a shiny new knife but to me there is something almost magical about beautiful old knives like this one you posted Jack. I think it is also what draws me to traditional knives even with new ones there is always a history of the patterns. People have been carrying and using them for hundreds of years and they have character that modern style knives just don't have. I love this forum because it is a place I can share my knife passion with like minded persons because in my day to day life even those that I know that like and use knives just can't understand why I get so much pure pleasure from them but here most of you are as nuts as I am. Two days ago I left home forgetting to put a knife in my pocket as soon as I realized it I turned around and drove eight miles back home to grab one before I continued on to my destination. I felt like I had forgotten my pants.:D
