"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

The Lounge has all manner of topics, some sad, some profound, others happy, irreverent, asking for help or just thinking aloud - as it should be. On Saturday I was plunged into gloom, the cat loves to be taken from the town to the countryside for visits. It's where she turned up originally and has been a stalwart ally in the battle against rodents, most sinisterly, rats who she has wiped out or driven off completely:D:cool: The garden is large with plenty of trees, a brook, shed, barn, disused house, a cat paradise. Across the lane is a small woodland and around it fields with forest in the distance, neighbours are visible but not near.

On arriving there she naturally wants to get out unless it's very cold -15c or worse or heavy rain, on Thursday night she had a feed and then went out for most of the night as usual. Morning she returns very pleased with herself;) Usually on the following days she will stay in a bit more or go up into the loft to hunt, very often she will walk with me up the lane across fields or to the very edge of the large forest, much like a dog would! Never had a cat that liked doing this before:cool: Friday night she goes out and by 6 pm on Saturday no sign of her anywhere, I really begin to fear for her safety, but she is a very fierce cat despite being only little and curious about people. There are foxes about but I think they leave fit adult cats alone and she is aggressive not timid, the Racoondogs (not a racoon but some escaped fur animal) have only just woken up and they're unaggressive, local dogs are kept securely tied up or walked on leads (the law) and the cat is a very good climber, but...there's been talk in the local paper of wolves - I came face to face with one years ago but in another part of the country. I have seen enormous paw prints near the forest...local wolves have been disturbed by a lot of logging lately but I think they avoid coming near houses from instinct. It's the Lynxes I worry about, never seen one but not only are they powerful but powerful climbers, a cat would stand no chance:( Walking around I found the remains of a large goose or Grebe something had got it but what? Eagle, Eagle-Owl, probably a Lynx.

No sign of the cat anywhere. Really worried, running all kinds of devouring tales through my mind, wolf,lynx,eagle-owl, even snakebite as they're waking up. Then the little madam appears totally exhausted, drank a huge bowl of milk and fell into a coma like sleep. My gloom turned to jubilation:D A happy ending indeed and she is a very merry little animal, always pleased and always ready for a game.

Here she is at under a year, fast asleep next to her biggest fan, me:) I am by nature rather pessimistic, worrying type, but I like being proved wrong!

Is this a good place to ask about the Forum knife thread? I didn't think it got all that bad this time. Other than a handful of people (some usual suspects) I thought it wasn't that bad. I have seen worse years. Should we not have a thread to even discuss it?

Nothing to discuss at this point.
Mike is talking to GEC to find out what can be offered.
Steve is ready for the poll.
As soon as we know what can actually be offered, then there will be a poll to choose. Once a maker is chosen, there will be polls to choose further options.

The latest thread had not gone very far down the slide, but it was headed there. Lest it get as nasty as the other, I closed it.

This forum is not about a forum knife. This forum is about sharing information and our love of traditional knives in a friendly supportive atmosphere. Anything that takes away from the primary goal of this forum is not something I want anything to do with.

The poll threads are going to contain warnings. Negative posts are going to receive infractions. You will be able to talk about the knife you want and why you want it. No negatives.

Glad she’s ok! We had a Tom that would go on romps for two or three days at a time until we had him neutered. Cats are great adventurers!

We have 4 cats. I will never let them roam freely outdoors. We learned what can come from that, and I will not repeat that experience in this lifetime.

We've definitely had worse years Mark, though of course it's not over yet. It's got to the point where my heart sinks when the first of the year's forum knife thread appears. The forum knife should be a celebration this place, and yet it often brings together the very worst aspects of BF :( We seemed to get off to a good start this year though

I'm not sure why some think the best way to get what they want, is to bash the other options. I'll be happy with whatever is chosen, because it is representative of this subforum. The meaning behind the knife is what matters. I of course have a preference, but in reality, the maker, materials, and pattern don't really matter.

I really like this story Will and as I read along experienced the involuntary stomach flutters that well up as rational reason slowly deteriorates into worst case scenario. More times than I care to admit uneasiness has crept in as I searched and called out the name of the subject of my avatar as evening faded to twilight. On one occasion deep in the national forest hiking back to camp she bolted off the trail fleeing from a terror that only she perceived and we (my much better half and I) descended into full blown all out panic as low light turned to darkness. I will spare everyone the details but let’s just say only those of us who know the depth of love one can hold in their heart for a four legged family member would understand the circus of drama that ensued. Willow is her name and one could do worse than emulate her character.

Whenever I see bickering about a forum knife (or other similar matters), I am reminded of a rather amusing joke by comedian Emo Phillips. The synopsis is that he sees someone who is about to jump off a bridge, and they enter into a discussion of religion, narrowing it down to the the fact that both of them are in the very same religious sub-sect, except for one vital difference. The final three lines of the sketch tell it all:

I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?"
He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.
I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over.
:D

Whenever I see people arguing about the minutiae of traditional knives, in the back of my mind I keep hearing "die heretic" and chuckle.

I just spent 10 minutes at Sonic watching my wife searching her 12 year old 4Runner for a dime she dropped between the console and the driver's seat. She obviously found it, else we'd still be at Sonic, and I'd still be watching her search for it.
Be happy she found the dime and you got some Sonic... my wife has been searching for a new frame for her 1998 4Runner, which will cost a pretty penny! LoL ;)

Man, I really know all to well that sinking feeling when a beloved cat goes off and doesn't return on schedule, I've had a few in the past that disappeared for a weeks time or more, and come back. Also know the feeling of when they never return, and after a week or two having to accept the inevitable. We've got three and they never go outside, unless it's on the screened porch, I never want to have to wonder again, butI also have some thoughts that outdoor cats are in some ways better adjusted, it's in their nature to explore, Mark their territory, and hunt. Suburban environs are not the best place for such activities though...

Hey Will, did I read somewhere that you have a certain nagging want of a Sharpfinger?

So glad your kitty came back. I would have been worried sick!

I just got back from a trip to Bandera, Texas with my mother who is visiting from New York. We stayed at a friend's house, and sat with our toes in the Medina River.

I brought my new Hess fixed blade, but the only skinning it got to do was when my friend Bobby asked to borrow it to turn his jeans into shorts:

I did a little whittling, of course. (supposed to be a jaguar head)

On the way home, we stopped at a few "antique" stores, and I bought another cast iron pan. It's an 11" Lodge. Not a vintage collectable, I don't think, but it should do the job once I have it seasoned. I also found a little Robeson ShurEdge sleeveboard pen in mother of pearl. It was kinda rusty and the small blade is messed up, but not bad for $4.

It was a lovely trip. :)

Jack you are right my friend I no longer read the Forum Knife threads I wait until a knife is chosen and am always grateful to those that make it happen. If it's a knife that is not for me I pass but still happy that there are those that are willing to work so hard to give us a knife of our own.
