"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

My condolences to his friends and family. Derrick will be remembered fondly by this community. RIP Derrick.

What tragic and surprising news to find here this evening. :(
Prayers for his family and friends trying to make sense of, or at least cope with, this loss.

wow.
I guess you never know when it's your time.
smoke and prayers up for the rest of his family.

Usually a knife bought from any reputable manufacturer will have good steel in it, but it will cost you $1.50 to $2.50. It will be worth every cent of that, though, in saved sharpening time.

— E. J. Tangerman in Whittling and Woodcarving originally (c) 1936

This quote made me smile this morning as I was re-reading Tangerman’s advice on knives, both because of its truth and those prices. :)

Adjusting for inflation, thats about $27–$45. If Schrade USA and Camillus were still around, I wonder if their popular patterns in Delrin would be available in that price range.

Because I just joined recently I never had the chance to learn about Derrick till now and it sounds like he was well liked. Prayers and condolences From another Michaganian/Michigander.

I’m not much of an animal person. Between animals not allowed inside as a child, and being allergic to dogs and cats, I’ve just never really bonded with many. We did have a black cat growing up (named whitey lol) that I was fond of. So i do understand. But I saw this today, and It touched even me. I thought some of you dog guys here would appreciate this.

Edit: language blacked out.

My cats are more like "We have deduced that the best way to kill the giant monkeys is to trip them so that they break their necks. So far, despite our best efforts, they manage to survive. One day, they will make a mistake. Until then, we will continue to time our mad dashes between their legs to the exact moment when they are walking through doorways, and continue to accept their sacrifices of chicken and tuna to appease us. But some day, we will feast on primate flesh."

The only knife of the weekend so far is part of a carving set. I'm pretty sure it says "Universal"(=Landers Frary & Clark), and quite sure it says "crucible steel", which makes it at least oldish.
