"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

That post count and join date restriction on the forum knife is going to cause some tears.
Ya, I was a little surprised when I read the qualifications. I've only been a member for a couple of months, so no knife for me. But I'm over it, just placed an order for one of the GEC #14s coming out soon. They didn't have requirements for purchasing

What we are trying to get away from is the issue we have had in the past of people buying the knife for the sole purpose of turning around to sell it at a large profit.

Add:
The intent is not to keep members out of this. We tried to make the qualifications reasonably easy to meet. If there are members who miss the qualifications in some regard, we'll look at their posting history.

Frank, maybe you should start a separate thread for "Petitions for exceptions to the limits on ordering the Forum knife" because your main ordering thread is starting to get a little cluttered with extraneous comments.

Local gunshow today was a wash as far as knives go. Just saw nothing interesting at all; however, it paid off in cent coins. From a couple of different vendors I picked up a VG+ 1909 Indian Head cent, a VF 1909 Lincoln cent with VDB's initials, an AU 1909 Lincoln cent (no VDB), an XF 1944 Lincoln cent, a XF 1939 Canada cent, and an VF/XF German 1949-D pfennig.

The 1909 VDB is always a nice pickup.

This is for the British members of Bladeforums.
Last October the UK government held a public consultation on a proposal to alter the Offensive Weapons legislation for England and Wales. This encompassed Knives and other bladed articles, corrosive substances and certain firearms. I believe one of our members (Chui-888?) highlighted this at the time.
The consultation ended in December and since then the UK government has been considering it's response in regards to what legislation would be introduced.

I've been occasionally going back to the UK government website to check. I'm sat here with a beer and was about to go to bed when I thought I'd check again.
Now unfortunately I've given up watching and reading UK based news media, so this may not be a surprise to some but it was to me. Not only has the UK government responded, but it has actually already passed the legislation and introduced further restrictions.

The actual legislation.

Essentially, and of most interest to the fans of traditional knives, is the ban on the delivery of knives (which have been purchased online) to residential addresses. I've only quickly scan read the document but it mentions delivery to 'lockers'. I'm not sure how this will work in practice so I'm going to have to investigate this further. I'm sure one of the major online knife retailers (perhaps Heinnie?) will have details on their website.
Also I'm not sure when this new legislation actually comes into force, but I'm assuming soon if it's not already effective.
Please pass this on to any British knife owners you know. And my apologies if this has already been raised.
Thanks.

-David.

Thanks Frank. My apologies. I like coming on here precisely because of the lack of politics and legal discussion. I wasn't really wanting to start a discussion on it; it was just more of a heads-up for everyone really. I'm not even sure how many Brits there are on BF. Anyway I've just done a duplicate post in the General Forum as well and stated for the Mods to move if inappropriate.
Thanks again.

-David.

The forum knife thread has brought out the lurkers who seldom post, but just read. It's also brought in folks who don't normally hang out in Traditional. All are welcome. There are some folks who have more selling posts than discussion posts. Some of those are a question mark.

Gary and I are making a check sheet for Steve. There are currently 15 pages in the thread and we've covered 8 of them. From that 8 pages there are 155 names on the check sheet so far.

I do like the idea that you have to publicly post to get to buy. The old process where anyone (including non-members) could just click a link in the ordering thread probably led to some abuse of the system.

If I recall correctly the minimum order was 250? With 155 names and some wanting two, it didn’t take long to get close to the minimum.

I haven't checked the thread the past couple of days, but personally I think the restrictions, which I'm sure will be fairly applied, are more than reasonable. I'm really not concerned with how people who don't post in the Traditional sub-forum feel about the Traditional sub-forum annual knife, bad enough that they turn up once a year to skew the voting, and sometimes bring unpleasantness to the discussions. The numbers of knives being ordered over the past couple of years has been way in excess of the number of posters here.

(I realise this differs from the official position! ;))

I have to say, having read through the ordering thread, it really gets my goat when posters start whining about not being part of an "elite". Anybody can join and participate in this sub-forum, and most of us find it very friendly and welcoming, and very far from snobbish. It seems that a lot of members outside The Porch have missed the whole point of the knife (some of them haven't even read Frank's post, let alone the forum guidelines). Honestly, the sheer avarice of some knife enthusiasts fills me with both horror and disgust - it's a KNIFE for crying out loud! And if you don't get one, it's not like someone is kidnapping your kids or something, you can stick around, join in the fun here, and hopefully pick up next year's knife

That’s a good point about the forum knife discussion threads—anyone new to the forum who started by participating there would have easily made 30 posts and (almost?) three months.

I really don't think 30 is a high figure, though it'd be nice if people also posted elsewhere, apart from the forum knife threads

Are you saying that a club knife should be exclusive to the members of that club? How elitist of you! :p

I can see it both ways. I believe that there are a number of knife collectors, some of whom are specifically collectors of Buck Knives, who have no intention to flip the knife for profit. They want one to own and use, and I can't blame them for that. On the other hand, one of the things that makes this knife special is that it's an annual knife made for the people who post in this forum. I'm glad I'm not the one drawing the line on who qualifies.

My understanding is that this year, there isn't an upper limit on the knife order; they will make as many as we want. This takes some of the pressure off, in that no forum members will miss out due to newcomers buying them all up, and there will be less of a secondary mark-up (at least for a while)

No, 30 is a low bar. I’d rather people post around and participate in the community as well, but I mainly was reiterating how reasonable the standard was: if ALL one cared about was a forum knife, simply participating in the process of choosing would get one to the mark.

LOL! :D I don't blame them either, but I think the Buck forum should sort out their own knife, I know that many of our regular members also participate in the Buck forum, but I think some members of that forum kind of muscled in on the voting and discussion threads in this forum this year. I think most of those who want the knife will still qualify though, and as you say, none of the forum members here are likely to miss out on the knife knife if they want one

Absolutely Joshua

CANADA DAY!

For the Canucks, one of yesterday's gun show finds:
