"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I understand how some folks could feel cheated to not be able to buy the forum knife; but, as has been pointed out already, just participating in the forum knife threads would get you over the participation line. I know that for myself the majority of my participation on the porch comes out of the annual forum knife process. I do post elsewhere, but on most of the topics that are discussed I don't really have much to add. But everyone can participate in the forum knife discussions. You don't have to be an expert to have preferences.

And the knife is about the community. If you never engage with your community are you really a part of it? If you never talk to your neighbors do you really have a neighborhood?

Canada. Only been there once. In the bush at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown and a couple of days in St. John's 33 years ago. Will go back one day.

I also found one or two of the posts in that thread whiny and irritating.

Here's Gary and my thoughts regarding the limits on forum participation for buying the Forum Knife .

The intent is to not have the knives showing up on eBay or the allaboutpocketknives store.
Probably some will, anyway. Some folks who meet the qualifications appear to primarily be here to sell knives. They sell a lot of NIB Traditional knives for inflated prices. But they also participate in the discussion forums. They meet the stated qualifications. So they can buy. PooPoo occurs. There's only so much we can do to prevent it.

By the same token, there are some folks who don't meet the basic qual, either through post count or newness. Gary and I have been taking those on a case-by-case basis. We look at the participation. We look at individual posts. A fair number of those have been added to the buyer list.

Gary and I would rather err on the side of letting a flipper buy them, than preventing a fellow knife enthusiast from buying a great one-of-a-kind knife.

So that's the deal, folks.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to make it work for as many as possible and still stay true to the forum. It isn’t without notice, despite the squeaky wheels.

I do understand the desire to reduce if not completely eliminate flippers taking advantage of the forum knife. I also understand that it’s impossible to establish criteria in an effort to do so that prevents 100% of flippers while allowing 100% of forum contributors to take part. Parameters were set, and it appears that some allowances are being considered. I do understand that running something like this can seem like a “can’t win for losing” premise.

I don’t meet the length of membership criteria by about 10 days. The only reason that feels a little like a kick in the head is that I paid to be a member here. When you lay out cash to become part of an online community, and then you are excluded from a key aspect of the community, it can leave a bad taste in your mouth. Especially when it’s been very clear that some members will be buying an extra to give to non-members. That’s the aspect that seems out of whack.

If that sounds like whining, I can live with that. We all seem to have things about which we speak our minds, and not all of them constitute whining. I’m not terribly interested in the design that we landed on, so I’m not losing any sleep over it, and won’t be asking for an exception. So why share my thoughts on this? I’m only posting this to share my perspective because, quite frankly, some have been a little flippant if not quite nastily dismissive of anyone who has expressed disappointment, including some I had previously held in fairly high regard. That certainly doesn’t help people feel welcome.

Did you message knarfeng knarfeng Frank and explain your case?

Thought I'd share a bit of my weekend, just a bit of goodness for my soul. Was such a good weekend for me I can't help but share a bit. My nephew and his fiancee came to visit. Its almost a 4 hour drive for them, and as they're only 19 one of their first long trips by themselves. While I was somewhat taken aback that their engaged at 19 (to me he's still a kid lol) I remember his mother was 19 when she married her husband. They've been married 21 years, so hopefully its proof its not so bad to start so early. I was thrilled for the visit due to distance and work schedules I don't see them as much as I'd like. His fiancee seems to be a wonderful person and his mother really likes her. We went to Atlantic beach on Emerald Ilse, spent the day Saturday splashing around in the ocean, walked the pier and generally had a good visit. Before heading home today they wanted to go to a good bbq place we like in Kinston nc. Near to where I live now. We went to the sporting store next to the restaurant, as my nephew wanted to buy a new holster for a handgun he has. While they was shopping the holsters I slipped over to the knife counter. I bought him a rough rider white smooth bone stockman, and her a amber jigged bone medium trapper. Gave them to them in the parking lot before they left to drive home. They was both very happy, which made me happy to have given them. Wish I would have got a pic of them holding their new traditionals, but at the time I didn't think of it. This weekend has given me much uplifted spirits.

Nice story :)

So it's Canada Day then?

Here's a beautiful Talon that Ken Kroll in Canada gave me as a present, he doesn't post anymore but I hope he's well and content. I was very moved by his kindness, he also sent me a Canada Ice Hockey pin in good humour, little realizing I don't follow the national game here at all:D But football that's different, especially with an electrifying World Cup on! Also in the picture a Beaver 5 cents coin my girlfriend's daughter gave me when she was a very little girl, she is half Canadian and a very grown-up and inked 24 year old now:cool: I carry a couple of coins out of superstition, this is one of them:thumbsup:

As for flies....honey/vinegar ;)

Horsefly season has started here, several nasty species that inflict painful large bites:eek: I used to buy these traps you fill with water, certainly no vinegar or honey in them :D A dreadful 'broth' of rotting meat extract :poop: that attracts the flies to their doom in thousands:cool: Only problem is the sole distributor has gone kaput and they're not available in outlets:eek: the downside of living in a small market:rolleyes:
