"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thanks JP. There are flypapers but they're more of an indoor/attic type.

Interesting that it's 'mouche' I thought I've heard French people call it 'abeille' as well o_O Whatever, it looks great at the end of a spring, I believe there are others like a fleur du lys ?

Indoors today, so there a No Flies on Me :D

Very cool, Jack.:thumbsup: Not many better crime novelists than EB. And I always think of Little Boy Blue as a kind of mid twentieth century reimagining of an urban delinquent Huck Finn.

I can vouch for the effectiveness of this method. We use use soft drink/soda in them to trap introduced European wasps, which are a menace in the summer months here. Horseflies might require different bait, but the traps are basically free, and easy to make and experiment with.

I hope he's ok - last I recollect hearing from Randy, he'd had a painful fall.

Congratulations kenspen kenspen and JTB_5 JTB_5 !

Yes indeed my friend :)

I also hope Randy is OK, and that he'll be back here soon

I just had to share this with all of friends here on the porch. When I started radiation and chemotherapy for brain cancer nearly 18 months ago, I decided that I’d do my best to entertain the radiation techs with wild socks. So, every day for next 6 weeks I wore a pair of wild socks. It really was pretty overwhelming as people from our church and all over the country started sending me socks. Before I knew it, I had over 35 pairs!
Here’s a small sample:

That brings us to the reason for this post. I just had to show off the latest pair that my daughter found for me.:D:D:D

You revealed a lot about yourself in this post Ken and above all you revealed that you must have a caring heart :) To think about entertaining the radiation techs under the circumstances shows tremendous character on your part... kudos to you and keep it up!:thumbsup:

Your daughter has great taste. Thats a awesome collection of socks!!

Great posts by everyone lately... from retirement, to the forum knife process and then on to bugs and socks LoL :D The one thing that stuck out to me when I was catching up on this thread last night was that I am in the "relatively new" category to The Porch and this 2018 knife is going to be my first official Traditional Forum knife (or any "forum type" knife for that matter). I joined BladeForums in November of 2016 and lurked / learned-a-lot / read-a-lot and got a feel for everything for almost a year before I ever even posted anything. I understood that although I was paying a fee to be part of this community, I couldn't come in like a "bull in a china shop" because like any social media site you can get the hammer dropped on you pretty quickly and then it just becomes a hostile environment. I'm very impressed with the care that our mods put into trying to suppress that negative environment, especially in the Traditional Forum. Sometimes the community itself steps up too and lets people know that they may want to tread a little lighter for a while. It happened to me a couple of times but I certainly didn't look at it as "elitist", I looked at it as getting to know the community and finding my seat on The Porch. I stepped back and realized that many members have been participating on BF for 10+ years and have posted thousands of comments, informative pieces, pictures, etc. above and beyond what might be expected in a social media community. The last couple pages on this thread alone you have R8Shell with 10,000 posts, Jeff with 13,000, Charlie nearly 17,000, Will with nearly 20,000 and Jack with nearly 30,000 posts... that's amazing considering I have ~750 LoL.

So taking all of that into consideration, when it came to participating in the forum knife process I knew where my seat was on The Porch; I voted for what I wanted, I read nearly every post and contributed previous information where I could, I referred to @meako 's Porchenberg forum knife process checklist as many times as I could :D I lobbied with PhotoShopped pictures of what the forum knife I wanted could look like ;) and above all I minded my Pints and Quarts. To expect any more than that based on my Traditional Forum membership status is unrealistic. It takes time to earn your stripes and I have no problem with the limitations that the mods are wanting to have for the Traditional Forum Knife, I waited a year to be eligible and didn't think twice about it; just makes the knife that much more awesome for me this year :D:thumbsup:

My suggestion to the mods would be to add a "sticky" to the top of the Traditional Forum thread that lays out the whole process and lists the necessary qualifications for getting the knife. That way people know when they first pop into the thread that if they want to be a part of this special knife, then they should try to contribute to The Porch. Grab a broom, sweep the birdseed off the steps and then find your place to sit and chat a while :D

Very nice of you Jack and @Cambertree to be thinking about me I'm here just been reading much more than I've been posting. I did have some more health challenges but doing better now.

Good to hear from you Randy, and glad you're OK. I did try to PM you earlier, but I couldn't get the software to recognise your user name, think it was down to a very slow internet connection. Take care my friend

Thanks for all your great contributions here Kevin, not least the incredible old knives you've shared with us. That's an excellent post in my opinion, very well-considered, if there is a sticky like you suggest, a link to your post wouldn't be a bad idea :)

And since I'm just wasting time in my last half hour at work today :D... here's a pic of an old knife, United Cut Co which if I remember right is one of the many trademark's by A Kastor & Sons

I'd been a BF member a few years before I started posting regularly in Traditionals. I was struck straight away by the great attitude of the regulars here, who were both helpful and welcoming :) Like many new posters to this sub-forum I neglected to read the Porch-specific guidelines  In a discussion about Richards knives, I made a post saying I saw them all the time, that they were very inexpensive here, and I'd be happy to pick them up for folks. I was just trying to be helpful, but I'd actually committed an act of 'Deal-spotting'! Gary meant to issue a warning, and accidentally infracted me! We've been friends ever since! :D I felt so bad, I ran a giveaway. Soon after, @Blues, who modded here at the time, gifted me a Gold membership. I've been renewing it ever since. I feel very honoured to be part of the community here :)

The "sticky" guidelines are very helpful and I read them frequently... recently I re-read them when there was the whole "what is traditional?" debate LoL. I should give myself a warning infraction for even mentioning that debate :rolleyes:

Kevin, this is an extremely well written and obviously well thought out post! Thank you for your contributions to the Porch! You fit in here nicely if I do say so myself! :D

LOL! :D I still read them regularly myself! Sometimes newcomers complain about them, but for me the guidelines, together with our mods, are what helps to keep The Porch such a nice place to hang out - that and our members :)
