Carothers and Guns

I’m in the market for a .22 pistol and wanted to get some feedback. Looking for a compact with threaded barrel.

I was initially thinking the FN502 but found they are having issues. I then went to the new Beretta 20x - I like the idea of the size. Add a small can and where can’t you shoot…?

I’m not into S&W but found they have a compact. I have the Ruger SR22 with standard barrel and it’s okay.

Y’all have any suggestions?
The best stock 22LR pistols I've ever owned have been Browning Buckmarks. I haven't been in the Market for a new 22 pistol in awhile so I'm not sure what Buckmarks are offered with threaded barrels these days.

The Ruger Mark IV series are a solid option too. Or if you want to step up ... Volquartsen pistols are the next level in perfomance with a price tag to go along with it.

As far as compacts ... I've never shot any that I would consider reliable.

Well, unfortunately, today was a pretty lousy day since we had to go pick up our beloved Pugs remains after she passed away Friday before last, at just shy of 15 years old.

Usually, when I get a little down, I try to find a way to decompress a little so I've decided tomorrow will be a range day. I mostly shoot 9's and 45's but tomorrow, I'm busting out the obnoxious stuff to take my mind off of things, even if only for a few hours.

Apologies about being a buzzkill but at least we get a picture out of it and a wrist workout at the range tomorrow. The HDFK won't be making the trip since I don't want to scare anyone.

Sorry to hear that. I had a pug that lived to be 13. They are great little buddies. Enjoy your distraction.

I had a 502 but ended up selling it, loved the looks but just wasn’t “it” for me

Have a Buckmark that’s seen over 20k rounds and still going good, mostly, probably need to replace some parts again, but is heavy and low cap considering today’s market

I have a Sig 322 that’s been pretty good, and super lightweight and with a lightweight can is nice for a backpack or shoulder rig for the woods

The new S&W 22x looks pretty interesting, just so new I haven’t had any experience with one yet

The beretta…..it’s cute but a novelty. I threaded a 21a years ago for laughs, I shoot it about once every 2 years for a couple mags just to giggle but they’re not the quietest host

Appreciate the great information. I started leaning toward the Ruger Mark IV but will also handle a Buckmark and compare.

I’ll have to consider the S&W and Sig, though I’ve never been a big fan of Sig. Going out next week to handle. 🤞 my LGS has these in stock.

I bought a Mark IV tactical from a guy a couple years ago for a good price, enough to make me want to mess with one

Never could get a whole mag to cycle standard velocity and tried 10 different high velocity options and still wasn’t great. Previous owner barely shot the thing (maybe 100 rounds), I gave it 800-900 so should have been broken in. Gun was maybe a year and a half old. I ended up sending it to ruger for them to look at and they replaced 5-6 parts on it. Got it back and ran HV fine but never standard velocity (unlike the buckmark which ate everything)

Buddy of mine liked the looks of the ruger and wanted something to teach his kids on so sold it to him and told him to stick with HV ammo and it’s been good to him (he’s not shooting nearly the volume I do though)

All that being said, Ive had to work on and clean more Mark 1s and 2s than I care to think of, ones that have had 40-50 years of crap in them and kept on going until they just had too much crap in them to work. The platform is reliable, just like anything could have its quirks

I’ve had similar experiences with the mark IV. My wife has one and it would have trouble getting through a mag when she first got it. It was sent back to Ruger. They said that they couldn’t replicate the issue. I think it was just particular about the type of ammo. So we can get it to run for plinking but I would not want to count on it when it really matters.

I’ve also had good experiences with the Browning Buckmark but it was more than 20 years ago.

I love the Browning Buckmark Target, absolutely the most fun gun I own. Unknown round count but it’s well into the tens of thousands and as long as keep it clean or well lubed while shooting a ton it hasn’t given me any issues. It needs a little TLC, probably some new springs because it will start to light strike/misfire shells once it gets dirty but it’s really not that bad of an issue, once it starts the 325 round box of ammo is getting empty anyway lol.

I wasn’t taking the odds on Santa delivering this so I said screw it and called a local shop to order me the new Henry Lever Action Supreme (LASR) in .300BLK, it’s going to make a great little compact deer and hog gun. The plan is to swap the stock and forend with Ranger Point parts and add a small scope of some sort.

Love it - have been going back and forth on a similar one. How about cleaning ?

I just got it in, haven’t fired a round yet but after seeing some videos on the gun it should be pretty easy. First off when the mag is removed and the lever is opened there’s a lot of space there that should make it easy to get it pretty damn clean without taking anything apart. For a more in depth look at things you simply push out the two pins in the receiver and everything pulls out of the bottom, lever, trigger assembly, and the carriage that the bolt rides on.

Thanks !

That’s the stock 10 round Pmag they come with but I added the baseplate. It has a limiter to make it 5 rounds and it was pretty stiff to start with inserting and releasing. The mag release pushes forward and mine seemed like it wanted to hang up on the magazine notch, not sure if there was a burr somewhere but after some constant back and forth inserting and taking the mag out it seemed to go away and now I can press the release and the mag will drop most times. It’s a little finicky and there’s a little more play front to back with the magazine than the Pmag has in the AR but I inserted a 20 round mag and shook the gun upside down to beat hell over my bed and it stayed locked in so I’m not gonna worry about it at all.
