I handled a 1301 the other day. Silky action was impressive…all the weight saving plastic bits seemed out of place at the price point, but very spot on ergonomically. This one was a 20” with a blue anno receiver. I told the sales guy I don’t have any shoes to match. ;) That’s not the one I’m after but the 18” would still be appealing.

What are you guys running on your deer/elk rifles? I’m finally looking to upgrade my scope this year, looking to stay with a Leupold , but also looking at Vortex. Looking at 4-12 x 30 or 40.

On my Tikka .270 I have the Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44. You will see tons of recommendations for it when searching for Leupold optics and I love it. Great low light quality and it’s the first scope I’ve had with an illuminated reticle. What a great option to have!

Under that option I also have a VX-3i 3.5-10x40 mounted on a Win. Mod 70 in .243. This scope is now discontinued and replaced with the VX-3HD. Obviously this scope is cheaper than the VX-5 but can still get the CDS dial made and you can get a version with the illuminated reticle. You lose the extra magnification and 30mm tube though.

I love the VX-5.

Are you happy with the Vortex red dot?

Yeah for just general shooting it’s been no issue at all. The dot isn’t a nice crisp circle, especially looking at it indoors, it cleans up when you’re outside though. That’s one of the main complaints I read before purchasing.

It’s easy to operate and has pretty good battery life, but what I really liked was how compact it is. It comes with the low mount, there’s others that will work for it too. I had a gift card and caught it on sale from Cabelas so it was a pretty good buy for me.
