Carothers and Guns

Yeah for just general shooting it’s been no issue at all. The dot isn’t a nice crisp circle, especially looking at it indoors, it cleans up when you’re outside though. That’s one of the main complaints I read before purchasing.
I only have one dot, an Aimpoint H2, (on my AR), and with the bit of astigmatism I have, it's always a bit of a starburst, but not at all problematic for getting a good sight picture. Mine is 2 MOA.

Everything else, I just use irons.

I use an EOtech holographic on my rifle that has a 3x magnifier that flips in and out of position and really like it. That’s the only one I be used.

I was inquiring about the Vortex for my wife’s Glock that she is picking up in a couple of days. I would prefer to have back up iron sights on there so it may have to be modified to accept the mount for whatever red dot I decide to go with. It seems most of the mounts replace the rear sight.

Thanks. It is a McMillan TAC-50. I have had it for about 12 years.

Ahh. I’ve briefly looked at the McMillans but don’t see them often so completely forgot that’s what the actions looked like, I usually think Cadex Tremor style chassis.

How do the American Rifle Company rings hold up? Any issues with the Kahles and windage adjustment?

I’m hoping to get my 99 out this summer but work really killed that last year and im
Assuming this year will be the same

The scope and rings are a recent swap to that rifle. Every round I have put through that 50 were with a Nightforce scope. The 99 has a cool form factor!

Thanks, but not as cool as mag fed 🤣 just nice to have a “compact” 32” barrel, and something that fits in a hard case (that it comes with). Have a couple friends with Armalites and 1 with a Bushmaster and the things are so large they have issues finding cases for them

Have a NXS on mine but no rounds through it on that rifle

Lets see...
...math....

If you need .5-1.0 cubic inch of volume capacity per grain of powder, and a 50 BMG holds well over 200 grains, a 3-in diameter can would need to be almost 3 ft long. Holy crap what an enormous round to try to quiet. Safe to say it's not practical to get hearing safe on something that big?

It’s almost 15” long and close to 5lbs

I wish I could say I knew what it sounded like but unfortunately I don’t. Stamp took a long time to come in and work ever since covid has been stupid and no free time for long range stuff. Being a bolt gun and sound going away from the shooter I’m hoping it’ll be borderline hearing safe but may be I just need ear plugs instead of ear plugs and muffs

I do hope to maybe do some subsonic loads but feel like a 510 whisper build would be a better set up for that

Sorry, I'm having a little trouble wrapping my head around this one.

I'm not a reloader, never have. Might try it some day, but it's a bit of investment. But I digress. Searching for the density of gunpowder, I've found that rifle powder ranges from 215 to 255 grains per cubic inch. If that's true, and a typical powder load for a 50 BMG might be 233 to 250 grains, it sounds like you'd need a little over 1 cubic inch of powder space. Maybe someone familiar with reloading can help clear this up for me?

Nathan is talking about gas volume per grain of burned powder - not volume of unburned powder.

Suppressors cool the gas.

Also a wider bullet makes for louder sonic crack. The 165db crack of a 50 BMG is heading away from you at 2750 fps so maybe it will be tolerable.
