I'm sure I'm not the only one out there with a CCW, so last night I was thinking about my never ending quest for holsters... and I wanted to know what you guys thought. What's the most comfortable holster you've ever used. where do you carry (IWB, OWB, ankle, pocket, etc.)what do you carry, what kind of holster material? leather? kydex? clothing options too, what kind of pants and shirts have you found that lend themselves to better ccw. how do you dress and carry for different seasons. (fall is the best season here for ccw, cool enough for a nice jacket, but not so cold that you have to dig through layers) summer is the worst but right now I mostly carry in my boot. its not ideal but it works and its more comfortable when I'm on the bike. once it cools down ill move back to IWB. anyway it would be cool to hear what some of you think on the subject of concealed carry options..

As far as IWB and OWB, I've tried a ton of different holsters and the Garrett holsters have been my absolute favorite. Incredibly comfortable. They are a hybrid. Kydex exterior for retention, but leather permanently bonded on the inside for a quiet draw, plus it's not as tough on your finish as kydex on steel. I carried occasionally on my ankle with a Galco Ankle Glove and that was very nice but I just preferred IWB. Depending on what you're carrying though, for me, the best combo I have ever had was my Shield in a Garrett Silent Thunder Solo. It was the most comfortable, it concealed very well, even in light clothing during the summer, the fit and finish were top notch, and it worked well. BTW, the Silent Thunder Solo has a neoprene backing covered in leather so IWB, you don't even notice it's there.

Thunderwear..................just kidding.

I hear you on the summer part. When I lived in Houston it was pretty much unbearable May-Oct. I'm a pretty big guy and eventually found a few brands of pants that let me pocket carry a P7 with no issues.

IWB carry. Front right between naval and hip. Cheapest $5 holster I could find at Academy. I carry between either Sig P220 or Kimber TLE II. The holster for the 1911 doesn't cover the hammer so when I sit, it digs in....so I don't carry it as often as I would like.

I wear the Sig with elastic shorts, blue jeans, everything. Any untucked shirt covers and with it in the front, it is much faster to reach and draw.

I know a guy Beef, E-mail me Brother.

+1 for garret industries.....but currently im using a Blackhawk and I hate it....lol. I carry my glock g22 which I don't really ccw I prefer open carry...i use the Blackhawk riggers belt with I think kydex or some plastic like material sewn in it....wilderness systems makes a much better belt imo but mine was free so I never got a new one. Im now looking at the blade-tec partial eclipse. As far as clothing goes...T.A.D. Gear is my choice. I carry kydex cuz well its a glock and the 2 just seem to go together.

Its a problem at the beach.

a sig 232 is about the largest thing I can manage in shorts since most of the room is already taken:eek:

Its why I open carry a MOAB, or an AK:D

Milt Sparks Versa Max II. Best IWB holster I have tried. I own one for my SIG P229 and one for my G19. They are worth they wait, like other things.......

Beef,

Appendix IWB is the only place worthy of carrying such an important tool, IMO. See link below for detailed explanation.

For this application, I feel that leather will be superior if all day comfort is important to you (it should be, otherwise you may not carry it all day). I've tried excellent quality kydex for this (from the maker shown in the link), but I am a very thin framed guy and kydex just doesn't work for me comfortably all day.

I'd look at any of the straight drop (no cant), high riding leather holsters from quality makers. There is not going to be one holster that works for everybody, so obviously you might have to try a few (possibly dozens).

For this reason, I'd suggest High Noon Leather as they offer a "30 day Return Policy" on most of their stocking items. This means you can wear it, beat it up, roll around in the mud with it, whatever you want and send it back if it doesn't work for you.

Here's how you don't want to carry your primary arm......

- Pocket carry, the old axiom being "have a gun" doesn't mean much if you can't access it quickly. With this mode of carry, good luck getting it into the fight while running, grappling, sitting, etc.

- Ankle carry, requires you to basically kneel to get it into the fight. Hopefully the BG will let you call timeout while you go fishing for your ankle gun.

- 4:30 carry, difficult to access while pinned on the ground, grappling, running, etc.

- Shoulder rig, basically requires you to wear a coat to conceal, slow to get into the fight.

Once you get out of the 'static' range mindset and accept the reality that paper doesn't stab or shoot you and the 'real' range is a 360 degree 'dynamic' environment, you'll see that these forms of carry don't really have much place for a primary CC arm.

Oh and when I have a jacket or like item on I'll keep my keys or something with weight to it in the pocket on the side I have my firearm so I can flip the jacket out of the way to allow quick to access my firearm.

I love these threads. We're moving to OR in less than 2 months so I'll be in the market very soon. (Stupid California)

I love my White Hat Holster. I can swap guns easily, and if you mod your equipment (I put on a Big Dot front sight for example) they will tweak the kydex for no charge.

They are cheaper than crossbreed and you don't need a new holster if you carry a different gun. I love mine had it for a little over a year.

I would also like to add if you don't have any weapon retention training get some it may save your life if someone grabs your gun....and practice your draw everyday take all unnecessary movement out ...watch for things like bowling the gun during the draw ECT....and don't worry about speed worry about form and accuracy....speed will come with practice.....and what good is being fast if you can't hit sh*t.

Hey Beef,

I carry a full-size 1911 45 acp all year long. I use a wilderness instructors belt and a Tommy Theis horsehide and kydex holster. It's a IWB holster. I wear shirts with patterns on them and leave the shirts untucked. The belt and Theis are very, very comfortable.

Oregon has great carry laws!

I carry at 4:00 in leather IWB. I haven't tried appendix in years but my gun always dug into my pelvis especially when sitting. Do others experience this? I have a few rigs I like but really want a Del Fatti

Appendix is very body type/holster dependent, what works for some will not work for others. What gun/holster combo were you using? Are you in good physical condition?

I will post a picture of my holster. It has a flap that covers the hammer and rear end while sitting. It isn't bad at all. I firmly believe in having it in front you rather than having to reach behind your back or ankle or some other strange place.
