Carry two knives?

I've noticed that a lot of y'all carry two (or sometimes more) knives at a a time as EDC. I'm not judging or being critical in any way (truly not my intention) but I am curious as to why you would need more than one folder? It is for different blade styles for different applications? Or is it for a backup in case your primary knife is lost somehow?
Don't get me wrong, I own quite a few knives but only ever carry one at a time. carrying two at a time may elimate the predicament of waking up every morning and debating which knife to take with me for the day (lately it's been between my ZT 0300 and my Emerson CQC-15).

You nailed one of the good reasons! Because then you can enjoy more knives throughout your day.

With knives as big as the ones you carry, some people bring a smaller one to use around people who aren't familiar with pocket knives. To break em in easy.

I carry a slippie as a utility knife, and a SAK as my food knife, I don't want 3 in 1 oil from my slippie to end up in my food.

That seems like a pretty good idea. I do get tired of the looks some people throw my way when I bust one of those knives out. Plus I work in sales and often become paranoid that it may turn a client off...

i was once harrassed by a ky dot officer for carrying too many knives I had a leatherman a stanley boxcutter a kershaw blackout and a swiss army knife he thought that was too many knives

For large tasks, you can carry your ZT or Emerson. But if you're just going to cut some packing tape around some sheeple, it doesn't hurt to have an SAK too.

Who says it has to be a folder?:)

My daily carry.

And I am by no means shy about using my fixed in public.

Already posted this in another thread (Too Nice to EDC), but most applies here as well:

I would recommend getting a smaller knife like Boker Subcom or better yet Gerber EAB and carry it in addition to your expensive knife that you so afraid to carry and use. This will let you have your bigger (or not so much bigger) most favorite knife with you. You get all the comfort, looks, features of your pride and joy when showing it off, and using it for light every day tasks (cutting soft material and such). Your favorite knife will stay pristine for a very very very long time. And if you need to perform a task that most likely will scratch or damage your knife, just use Gerber EAB (or whatever).

I carry my Strider PT most of all, and I'm not afraid to use it, but I like to carry EAB or Subcom just in case. Like when I needed to cut a whole bunch of wire mesh material on a screen doors. I could use Strider, I would care less if I put more scratches on it, but I knew that task will dull the blade pretty bad, so I just used Gerber EAB, and replaced the blade later on. No sharpening, no problems. If you carry Boker Wharcom you can actually open cans with it (not comfortable, but doable) and your Sebenza (Benchmade, Spyderco, Whatever) will stay safe. Anyways, most likely 95% of your everyday tasks will be a light use (unless you have some special job) and you can carry and use your baby without feeling bad about it.

Also, if you tend to carry big knives, having sub-2" folder on you will help to avoid scaring people in some situations.

If someone will ask to borrow a knife for a second, give them this small inexpensive knife (or don't give anything at all) and don't worry about it.

Too add to the adove:
On rare occasions, if there is a somewhat dirty task to do and I can't clean up the blade right away, I'd rather do it with Gerber EAB (Or Subcom) and keep my main blade clean for food and other tasks.

Beautiful Koster, Todd. I'll whip my HEST out in public too-and have had sheeple comment negatively on it. Funny part is the blade is an eighth of an inch shorter than the SAK they have in their pockets. The Air Force and SAS survival manuals both recommend having at least two cutting edges. That reason alone is enough to get me carrying two knives. Whether or not I may be put in a survival situation doing day to day stuff, anyone can debate-it's the principle. A cutting tool can save lives, including your own, and having something so small and light on you is worth it in case the other fails.
Arpaio, unfortunately, reflects many people in here that equate "knife" with the term "folder". IT DRIVES ME NUTS! You might as well join the sheeple herd! What is it with folding knives that fixies can't be used for EDC? When most of the time they are the more reliable and cost effective option? I just don't understand that.

Wasn't trying to insinuate that every knife is a folder, just that most of the threads I read are about folders since I only have a couple fixed blades and it was in the threads about folders that I saw a bunch of people talking about carrying two knives. Didn't know that made me a sheep....

Didn't know that made me a sheep....

It doesn't. Don't sweat it.

Most here carry folders because they can't legally,or because of dress/lifestyle,carry a fixed.

I can. Concealed or open.So I do.

I carry two folders because I carry small ones. I carry (nearly all of the time these days) a Small Sebbie 21 (2.95") and a Spyderco Cricket (<2"). The Sebbie is very nice and I use it most of the time, but the Cricket is good for those odd tasks and also it's a fun little knife. Plus, I'm not too scared to use it in hard tasks compared to the Sebbie (though I could easily bust the tip on the Cricket.

I generally carry some sort of Spyderco for most cutting tasks, and a SAK for the tools and food-related knife work.

Arpaio, you have nothing to explain. You did nothing wrong. Most folks who EDC in the city do carry folders. I know I do.

And, BTW, I carry two. Always a slipjoint in my front pocket because that will take care of 99% of my cutting needs. But I often also carry a one hand opener that has a bit larger blade in case I find something that needs it (and also because I can.)

I carry two as my main preference is for bigger than 5" knives.
SO I carry a small sheeple frinedly knife, for those occassions when
whipping out a Cold Steel Large Espada would be unwise.

And also as said above, if someone asks for a knife, they get the little one.
Unless it is someone I know is into knives, then I might just pass them the Espada. Or whichever of my large knives I happen to be packin that day.
