Carrying a folder vs a multi tool

Wow, nice carry stuff you got there. ive thought about carrying stuff like that but I don't know how id keep my pants up! never really been much for the whole mall ninja thing either.

You see, in modern society we have these things called belts. Further, you clearly don't know what the word mall ninja means. I'll give you a top tip, ninjas don't carry glocks or traditional GEC folders or SAKs. They do carry S&W garbage knives though

Look, you've been going around suggesting people buy the absolute cheapest pot metal knives saying they compare favorably to obviously much better options. You've also said that you only buy black coated knives because a guy at wallmart told you the coating increases edge holding by changing the molecular make up of the steel. Then finally you have also admitted to knowing nothing about knives. If you are not a returning troll who is here to mess with us then it is time to read a heck of a lot more in order to learn some of the basics of this place. Learn more. Read more. And to avoid embarrassing yourself further, post less. Or continue on. Either way it is a win. You either learn through reading or you will learn through people telling you how wrong you are when you post.

A multi-tool is always secondary to a knife. I always have a knife unless I've had a stupid attack and leave the house without it. I don't always carry a MT. My knife normally is carried in the front right hand pocket of my trousers. At times, I will carry a modified Gerber MP600 or MP400 on my belt or in my bag. If for some reason I plan to only carry a MT, I'll reach for my Leatherman Wave. If weight is an issue, I will grab a SAK instead of a MT.

It has been my experience that a MT is nice to have around but is rarely the right tool for the job. I have seen times when someone will use a MT on a project even though regular tools are available. Just to lazy to walk six feet. Also have seen someone use a knife blade as a screwdriver when they had a Leatherman Wave with them. Crazy.

As for me, it depends on your definition of "multi-tool." Some people put SAKs in this category, but when I use the term I mean pliers-based tools.

For me, the weight and bulk/utility ratio is too high, and the tools--including the pliers themselves--are too much of a compromise for me. I keep a SAK in my pocket, and I keep very small (and most excellent) Knipex pliers (the 87 01 125 model) in my bag.

Amazingly reserved response. I was bracing for fireworks when he sort of called you a mall ninja

On topic, I carry a Leatherman Surge daily as tools tend to walk away at work and I'm usually where folks go when something breaks (yep, they go to the printer). I have one of those flat pocket wrench deals so I can hold bolts and tighten nuts and it fits nicely in the sheath.
I also carry a traditional, SAK and box cutter for various tasks and the fun of it.
I normally only use the blades on the leatherman if I have to cut something that I wouldn't want to ruin a good knife on.

Now he doubled down. Either doesn't know what he is talking about or is a returning troll. Whichever one it is, no reason in me getting upset :)

Nice carry options craytab! I'm digging it! I must be in the same "mall ninja" category because this is seriously what I just got back from the store carrying this fine Saturday morning :D

P.S. Belt absolutely required!

So returning troll it is then! Enjoy your stay!

Looks like he broke character. Been wondering how long it would take.

OP: I find a multitool to be too bulky for daily carry so I leave one (LM Juice S2) in my bag. Alox SAK Cadet in my pocket gives me something of a multitool along with a blade.

Oh, and I like to carry the skeletool since it's got a pocket clip. Otherwise I carry the multitool (older wave usually) in an ankle magazine carrier along with the spare mag. I rarely use an MT, but it's nice to know it's there. Honestly sometimes I'll go out the door without one, but I gotta at least have a knife.

Did I also mention the new fangled invention called pockets? I wonder how many ninjas have pockets.....

To me multi-tools are in a different category than SAKs; I'm not saying I'm right - just that's my opinion. With that backdrop I will often carry a tactical-type folder (usually an Emerson), a smaller SAK and a MT - almost always a Leatherman in one iteration or another but I own and use other brands of MTs on occasion.

The LM Wave has readily accessible blades that do not require opening the tool to use. Others have this very desirable feature as well.

During those times when I am not carrying a sidearm, I will have a folder (again, typically an Emerson) as my primary SD implement. For those other times, a MT like the LM Skeletool makes for a very handy pocket knife that allows for one handed opening w/o opening the pliers, etc. Even so, and as stated by others, a MT just doesn't seem to be able to take the place of a pocket knife - be it a SD/tactical knife or other.

A Wave or Skeletool can and will take the place of am EDC folder but IMHO gives up some convenience and performance in exchange for more versatility. Every design of just about anything involves compromise.

All of that being said, a MT - even if only a LM Micra, is just about always part of my kit; but the Surge or LM 300 is only lugged around when I anticipate actually needing that level of MT capability.

don't much see how you harassing me over my choice of pocket knife makes me a "troll"

I already explained it. Go read my post again. You are either here for the hobby in which case you will be here to learn or you are here to troll. You've not chosen learning but have chosen trolling. Notice how you responded to me unprovoked with childish name calling? That be trolling.

At this point you might be getting a bit sore because everywhere else you have posted people are having the same reaction. Seriously, read more, learn more, and post less. Or continue to troll. You can choose who you want to be here.

And whatever you choose don't ever tell anyone that your S&W pot metal knife has a magical blade coating that increases edge retention through molecular metallurgical process and you learned such a thing from a Walmart employee. Great way to ruin your credibility right there and it insults those here who know a little something about metallurgy and molecules (not me BTW).

On topic, I have a wave that I got a pocket clip for. I hardly carry it though. It stays in a pack mostly. My juice and power lock do just fine. By far I use the pliers and bits the most.

I love the mini bit adapter on the newer wave (maybe?) and the Charge, since I wear glasses and sometimes the screws come loose, not unlike my mind most days, haha! But even though my TI Charge has a pocket clip, it's a little bulky. I just picked up a new Wave of the forum that I might find a pocket clip for. Might take the place of my Skeletool.

:( i never called you anything until after you felt the need to insulted my choise of knife and call it pot metal. i guess if it makes you feel good to harass people who have less than you, that you feel are inferior then i guess theres nothing i can do. its ok, ive dealt with it before, i guess i can do it again. its just not how id prefer to live my life, picking on people. anyway, i have no hard feelings, ive been aroung too long to have time for that now. wish you the best, buddy.

I'm not your "buddy". Nor am I "picking" on you. Having less money is no excuse for the things you are saying. You can buy less expensive but higher quality knives than your S&W. What it takes is learning. Reading more. I think I mentioned something like this before? Your first post in this thread is you singling me out and calling me a mall ninja. You did so completely inaccurately. You admittedly don't know what you are talking about. Sit back and read. Learn. You seriously need to look at what you're doing and try not to contradict yourself or make statements that everyone here knows aren't true. How is anyone supposed to take you seriously when you do that? That is unless you are doing it on purpose. It's up to you.

Im curious what do you carry and why? Id be interested in a good multi tool i think. How are they to carry everyday?

I, as many here, carry a folder and MT as part of my EDC as well as some type of SAK.

As the others, I find the pliwers based tool heavy and it usually rides in the bag, while the SAK is on my person.

The smaller knife gets much use, then comes the folder and finally the Multitool sees some use from time to time.

No need to carry it in the pocket, since there is usually no hurry when it is needed.

Smaller tools usually go clipped in back pocket, though (Micra, Dime, Squirt, etc.)

Pics are of some of my EDC carries, always including a SAK, MT and Folder/Fixed blade
