Carrying a knife . . . .

Wow. Just wow! I have highlighted some of the quotes below from Barney Fif...er, Wannabee, I mean, Marcinek.

Unbelievable. I've always wondered what he was up to! I guess now maybe I'm beginning to see it might be a mission to mold us into "thoughtful, considerate, intelligent, civic-minded folks", rather than the "overcompensating whackos with fetishized tactical "killing junkie terrorists" bents" he sees "many" or "plenty" of us (BF users) as...

Of course, carrying knives is an option (at least in free countries and locales) and should not be the criteria for judging someone's character.

He's probably gonna sic somebody on me. But if I would have posted that "... plenty of the (people on BF) ... are overcompensating whackos with fetishized tactical "killing junkie terrorists" bents" - I would be the one EXPECTING to hear from a moderator.

I'm surprised that he's never met anyone who DOESN'T carry a knife, that isn't "thoughtful, considerate, intelligent, civic-minded". That's what ALL means, right?
If you are going to cherry pick the words of a grumpy old man, at least listen to him. He says people he knows. Not just people he's met, different bar of expectation. Anyway, you've been here long enough, you should have realized that there are certain people who you aren't going to get along with, and no one much cares. If you have a problem, you have an ignore setting, and a report button, use one, or not. You are an adult.
There are plenty of Jack Reacher wannabies here. Plenty to me is a single digit number, as in, there are enough of them, we don't need more. Did I commit some sort of crime saying I think there are members of BF who think way too highly of themselves? If I named names in the open forum, then yes, I have. Otherwise we are just discussing ideas, not people.

Kids nowadays don't even know what an atlas is! lol

GPS isn’t foolproof & batteries die. BTW, once upon a trip, I found a town with two addresses that were just the same, but were at least two miles or more apart. The post office and the town’s land office ought to have eliminated that.

Anywho, I have carried a knife ever since my Dad got all three of us little guys a knife for Christmas one year in a galaxy far far away.

I don't think whether or not someone carries a knife should be seen as a character issue.

I did "listen" to him, by reading his post. I read yours, too. Apparently, you like his and you don't like mine. You've got an ignore button, too. It won't hurt my feelings - I'm an adult. You said so yourself.

I did not call anyone a grumpy old man, or use any profanity. If you read my posts, you'll see that they are almost never personal, unless I'm offering congratulations or condolences.

I am not nearly as free with my opinions of other people, or how they should act, or what they should do or not do, as some other unnamed people consistently are. I try not to generalize, or stereotype, and whenever possible I mind my own business. I try to encourage civility and respect for others, but I don't go around trying to "nip it in the bud!" How's that for not naming names?

Thanks for your input. If you have further suggestions for me that aren't related to the thread topic, feel free to PM me. Happy New Year!!

Different areas call for different types of preparedness. I like redundant systems, so I like to back it up with a good folder or small fixed blade, but if I can only have one type of knife in an urban environment I want a good multi-tool.

Not sure how we got from carrying a knife to GPS and a tragic event but just IMHO ... anytime you go off the beaten path you should prepare for alot of things ...

unlike a trip in town where help can be found ...

and to go off into winter ... and especially into the wilderness ... you should ALWAYS pack extra clothes ... food ... water ... blankets ... good insulated boots (if you aren't wearing them to start with) ... at least 2 or 3 ways to start a fire ... a saw and or hatchet and a knife ... lights and spare batteries ... first aid kit ... and probably the most important ... tell someone where you are going and when you will be back ...

so to the orginal question ... just my personal 2 cents worth ... I would feel unprepared for 99% of my days if I didn't have a knife of some type on me ...

but a knife alone would not have changed the outcome of that particular tragedy ...

and lastly ... your brain and keeping your wits about you ... and having knowledge is by far the most important survial plan.

I recently turned a buddy onto carrying a pocket knife. Picked out the Kershaw Leek for him. He's being carrying it every day including around the house. He couldn't believe how handy it was to have on hand for the stupidest little things you would never think of until they happen.

I at least carry a small useable traditional any time I have pockets. It's the most used tool I own.
My small flashlight has become a close second as my eyesight has weakened with age.
Lol

We're in the same boat, pal. My keys hand on a carabiner on my left side and I reach of the little Fenix E01 more times in a day sometimes than my keyring SAK or coin pocket slip joint.

Around my house I like being comfortable, to the point that I don't even wear jeans. I got a Gerber Para Mini that clips right into the pocket of my lounge pants and I never even feel it there, no matter how I might be sitting or laying around. No running to the kitchen to dig for scissors around here.

I can appreciate your comment, it's good to know what people are thinking, but if any principality comes for your knives it IS a simple matter that knives HAVE BEEN defined as 2nd Amendment weapons. They are not legally allowed to be restricted.

Now that said, some cities, counties, states and Congress have restricted 2nd Amendment implements.

My question to you is why did YOU and your fellow man allow them to do that and what are YOU doing to overturn their position? Do you donate to all of the 2nd Amendment groups? Have you called and written your Congressman?
Despite what you may have read on various internet sites, the 2A is far from an absolute right and there have been numerous cases in which restrictions on “arms” of all types have been found to be within Constitutional bounds.

There may be places where the right to keep and bear arms is an absolute one in both practice and definition, America is not that place.

Me! :)
And I carry a flashlight, plus Naloxone in case I come across overdose victims...I feel a strong case of superiority coming on. ;)

(Oh yeah, I carry knives also)
I want to believe that you carry the Narcan since you’re some kind of first responder who is likely to encounter ODs...sadly I know that opiate use is so common these days that one doesn’t need to be in the emergency services profession to have a need for it.

The US Supreme Court tends to avoid hearing 2A cases as the Constitution restricts Federal infringement upon those rights.

its not something that youre aware of how useful it is till you actually carry one every day. Watches are the same, much handier and more noticeably so than you would think over a cell phone. Most folks us included could get by just fine for the most part without one and live our lives.

We just kinda ended up figuring out how useful they are.

I agree 100%.

I'm in Illinois and if things get more restrictive here, I'd like to retire to a state that is far more 2nd Amendment friendly.

Umm, no.

The two (arguably) most significant 2A cases of the last 30 years (Heller and McDonald) are both SCOTUS decisions, one overturned DC’s handgun ban and the other Chicago... similar cases but McDonald expanded case law from Heller to apply to states under 14A.
