Carrying more than one EDC. Why?

I carry more than one most of the time. Usually a modern locking knife and a traditional slipjoint, or a fixed blade and a slipjoint. Sometimes I carry a multitool.

I do it partly cause it gives me different blade options (for example, today I used the california clip on my stockman to cut my lunch and the wharncliffe to cut tags off life jackets, then when I needed to quickly cut a sharp piece of plastic off a canoe I used my one hand opening modern knife), partly because a fixed blade or modern ("scary") knife sometimes doesn't fit the situation, and partly because I just like knives and like to have a mix of modern and traditional.

Diff knives have different purposes. I got a esee 4 that i use for anything rough or messy, a delica that i keep razor sharp for fine tasks, and a surge for all the random tools on it. Sure i could get away with only one but whats an extra pound or two?

I keep a modern folder in my right pocket (para2 lately) and a leatherman on my belt. In my line of work I am in constant need of a screw driver and pliers, but I need one handed opening when I need a blade. I never have understood the whole 2 different folders at a time, but hey different strokes for different folks.

I carry my Emerson Super CQC-7 and belt carry a Leatherman Wave. And sometimes I'll carry my Spyderco Endura as well.

I carry an Avispa and a Delica because they both slice well, and because I tend to put one down somewhere and don't have it when I need to cut something.

I usually carry a Buck 301 in pocket and an Alpha Dorado on the belt. This leaves the rf pocket free for a larger folder when I feel the urge. Why? I like knives.

I almost always carry 6 knives -
Paired fixed blades - 1 L 1 R usually Kabar 1232s (4 inch) or 1 1232 and 1 Kabar shortie (125x)
2 Buck folders - 1 LFP 1 RFP 482/484
1 BK11 LRP
Leatherman in a belt sheath, R side, aft of the fixed blade

Why this configuration??
One knife doesn't always match what needs cutting.

I prefer fixed blades - I have never had one accidentally close on my finger, never had one "lock-fail" on me, easier to pull and use as needed.

Why 2? If the knife is on the left and you left hand is engaged, you're screwed. Ditto on the right.

Why the BK11? The bottle opener, of course. (JK) It's so I can drop the other fixed blades if needed for the business I'm about to go in and still have a fixed hiding in my hip pocket.

Why 2 folders? Well, same L/R reason as above - also some situations, a smaller folder works better.

Why the MT? For the tool kit in a sheath.

And then there are the various knives/cutting implements that ride around with me each day in whatever vehicle I'm in, but those are all JIC knives.

A BK2, a BK9, a BK3, an Ontario 20" machete, 14" or 16" bolt cutters, and a hacksaw in every vehicle. 24 years as a FF/EMT makes one paranoid about havingthe right equipment for the job.

Now, on Sundays/funerals/weddings - it drops to folders, BK11 and an elegantly slim, vintage, 1931 Western "Patent Applied For" K3, R side.

Bk24 convex and a SAK cadet to appease the sheeple...

I saw today someone posted their edc which included 2 flashlights. I don't see the point but maybe it's usually pretty dark where they go.

People get obsessed with being "prepared". Not knocking the guy above at all, but does anyone need doubles of a fixed blade and double of a folder, as well as two other knives? No. Not unless you spend a lot of time in very isolated places where one has to fend for oneself. But people get hooked on the "prepared" aspect, the "what if?" mindset.

I usually carry a modern locking folder and a SAK. The SAK is mainly for the other tools (primarily screwdrivers, bottle opener / prybar, scissors). I like having the modern folder for one-handed operation.

I always carry one full serrated and one plain edge. I serrated my Leatherman juice, and all my folders and fixed blades are plain edge.

I think there is a reasonable limit. I normally carry one and a multitool in my bag. But I see nothing wrong with a blade and a SAK/small MT
