carrying on college campus

(and are prone to errors in judgement 18 year-olds are so likely to make).

Don't you have to be 21 to carry in North Carolina?

Do you think the requirements to obtain a North Carolina concealed carry permit should be more stringent?

No, I don't think the requirements should be more stringent. I think they are pretty strict as they are, although I don't know much about it. I know the person requesting the permit has to provide evidence as to why he/she needs it, and it's at the discretion of the county sheriff. Very few permits get issued in my county (there is some state website that shows a county by county breakdown). Don't know why that is. My guess is that if I applied for one it would be denied due to my profession, as in, I don't need one. If, God forbid, there are any more VT type incidents, I would argue my profession is a reason I do need one.

Gotcha! I would feel better if professor's could carry.

The thought that one cop can protect hundreds (if not thousand) of students/faculty is ridiculous.

I happen to go to a particular school in which has unfortunately made front page news in the past few years. Just take a wild guess....

Fortunately, we are still allowed to carry knives (I believe up to 4" folders, no fixed). Since its a public state university, you can technically CCW even though its a "gun free zone" and they worst they can do is tell you to leave. Being a student and not yet 21, I cannot CCW on campus but keep a loaded shotgun in the Apt.

We have a very active "Students for Concealed Carry" club and have done a lot of work try to push legislation through. Although I greatly support both teachers and students being to continue to CCW on campus, if you only allow teachers to carry then they will immediately become the first targets. By allowing students, then a much more significant population will be armed, and cannot be as easily singled out.

Rest assured I WILL be getting my CCW in 9 months when i turn 21. Already starting to save up for the gear/training.

One should also remember that the police have no duty to protect individuals. I'm not saying they don't try, but its impossible for them to be everywhere.

Lets not forget about Warren v. District of Columbia, DeShaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services, Balistreri v. Pacifica Police Department, Riss v. City of New York, Freeman v. Ferguson, McKee v. City of Rockwall, Texas.

All of those cases are very good reading...and I'm sure there are plenty more.

I just want to state for the record that I do think knife carry should be allowed on campus, and I do think that if you have a concealed carry permit you should be allowed to carry on campus. I have some concerns about weapons on campus, but if it came down to a yes-no vote, I'd vote yes.

I was told last year by the RC of my dorm that anything 4" or less is allowed, the dorms are on campus so I just go by that. I carry just about anything I'm comfortable carrying around campus that's 4" or under. So far I haven't had any issues.

If your rules say you cannot carry, I would suggest you be very discreet about the knives or don't carry them. You could even probably get away with carrying the one in your bag. If you want to know more about the rules I would go to your dean of students and ask.
They also say no drugs or alcohol on campus
College rules were meant to be broken.:p:D
Ah yes, Freshmen year...

I carry folders mostly, Strider SnG, Spyderco Leafstorm, Spyderco Manix 2 CF/S90V. Carry them on campus at community college. I also carried in HS basically everyday, especially in band, started with a CRKT M16 went through 2 of those, eventually moved up to a BM710, then a BM710 and BM940, then finally the Strider.

Don't get caught, and if you do, make sure they don't care anyways. Most people knew I carried, never had a single issue.

I always carry on campus, I dont go to a large university so they seem to be pretty lenient. But I would never be caught not carrying at school, also we only have a few police/guards and all they do is drive around the parking lots in golf carts and make sure you have a parking pass! WTF?

The college I went to allowed the students to carry folders on campus and the Cops/Security encurreged the girls to do so. We were even allowed to carry a concealled pistil with a CCW. Here in Utah state run colloges have less gun/knife laws but the private universitys for the most part are supper strict. I'm looking at going back to school and one of the first things I look at are their gun/knife/weapons rules.

In school I always had a leatherman Mini and a folder on me at all times.

dude. just, dude.

A friend of our daughter just had his SAK taken from him by school authorities, in Germany schools nowadays have a very strict no knife (and weapons) policy.

That 17 year old only had the knife on him, cause it was the one with integrated USB, and he didn't find his other USB stick and he was told to bring his homework in on USB ...

His parents had to go and get the knife back for him.

When a younger kid was found to have a small kitchen knife in his lunch box along with his apple they even had a conference ...

I used to carry, and teachers and head of school knew and nobody had a problem. Others couldn't carry back then, but that had more to do with how they behaved when they had carried than with school politics ...

I our country with strikes on campus and violence breaking out I have seen some weird things. With that said I use my knives as tools. All my professors know that, but I do know how to use it if necessary. So I have always carried on campus. We have about 200 security personal for 50000+ students. They do the bare minimum. We had a bomb scare in a building we were in......they did not even evacuate us!!! That was pathetic of them.

I agree. I am post grad at another university and the same happens here! I have been fined a R1000 total, aint no way I am paying that! They do not know whose car it belongs to and they are apart from the traffic police. So

Yup, its ridiculous. They gave me a ticket the first day of the new semester because I still had a pass from last semester (we have to buy them every semester:mad:) so I went in to buy a new one and I guess they wrote down the car info and they wanted me to pay a $50 fine! I said no way in hell im gonna pay that! Its the first day! Gimme a break! Luckily the girl gave me a a freebie on the fine.
Anyways, I believe their time would be much better spent if they divided up the duties and patrolled different areas of the school instead of going from lot to lot writing tickets:rolleyes:

Well I have been out of school for a while.... (like since '79) but when I did go to school, I always have a folder on my belt, so did everyone else. They are really nuts about knives in school these days, but my son has a SAK with him, and the understanding he isnt to show it to anyone. In 5 years I don't think anyone knows he has it. Of course he has been instructed that if anyone at the school gives him a hard time about it, then he is to refer them to me. I am more then happy to deal with the issue.

All the current society's hate on guns and knives. I wonder what the actual statistics are for injuries and deaths from these by law abiding citizens. Hell I would bet my pay check that someone walking around with HIV or herpies is more of a threat to their fellow mankind than a student with a pocket knife. But then again, I cant see a police officer asking you to hand over your penis becuase your a threat to socitey..

I have a feeling I'll be doing the exact same thing when I have a child. Seriously, I can't believe they ban SAK's in school. How many stabbings/homicides have you heard on the nightly news being done with an SAK?

See now, I don't understand why they would take away an SAK. I mean, its a TOOL. People are just idiots. I'm in class right now and I have a leatherman charge clipped to my pocket. I can't even imagine someone coming up to me and telling me I can't have it. I would just laugh. What do you want to do, stop me from fixing a desk. The regulations are ridiculous.

Last year one of my professors even asked the class if anybody had a knife to cut something open. I tossed him my mini-grip and he even complimented it.
