Carrying your survival knife

well said...:D if mine is not on my belt,it's in my pack.....

Here Here!

Even if I'm in a place where I'll see other people,
I figure as long as I am not dressed in Camo, lookin' like a sandinista rebel,
all is cool.
If there were any Q's, in the pack it would go, but only under protest.

I'm never without a smaller 4-5 inch fixed blade on my belt, but the larger Leuku, Golok, etc. will usually ride in or on my pack. I have the luxury of not needing to deal with perception very often. Either just aint many around, or they're used to living with guns, knives and implements of death and mayhem being carried openly here in Alaska.

Hey California residents, I just found this link:

OVERVIEW

Under California state law, non-switchblade pocket knives that are concealed in the closed position can be legally carried, concealed or open-carry. Fixed-blades must be carried openly. Knives that are disguised as something else (belt buckle, shotgun shell, etc.) are completely banned. Switchblades may be owned privately in the home, but not street-carried; while not specified, most people assume that transport is legal on the same basis as a gun: locked in the trunk in a locked container. Cane swords are completely banned.

If I'm at home it's my Fallkniven or my Northstar. Also in my local area nobody will bother you for wearing a fixed blade. The main places I hike are at home in the woods so I can carry a GUN there if I wanted to:D The other place is in the wilderness areas and nobody cares there either although my nessmuk is what I usually take there.

So the next door kid comes over to show me his new big knife.
It's a nice one, a fine knife, full-tang, and ready to go into the woods.

Later after he came back, he said that he could not wear the knife on his belt because of the thick padded belt that is on his backpack.

So his dad rigged it up to the outside of his pack.

I never knew that some of the new moden backpacks have such wide belts with them that they make wearing a belt knife a bit hard to do.

YOu can fashion a drop leg or extension to the belt loop on the sheath so it rides below the pack waist belt.

BLackhawk and other make such an extension about $8.

I was curious, It seems like alot of people have survial knives in this forum (obviously) but I was wondering how many people wear them when ever they go to the woods, even for a short day hike or do you bring something smaller.

As many mentioned here, I always carry a knife in the woods. Day hike, backpacking trip, or truck camping.

For the most part, this:

My Mora is always around my neck, and my SAK is in my pocket.

Yes.... the Mora is my "survival" knife.

One more brief bit about California State Laws, I just found.
(Local laws can and will vary in any state).
I know this would better belong in the 'Knife Laws' forum, but, when we discuss camping and hiking it seems that "the law" comes into question, dependant upon where we are hiking.

24)(d) Knives carried in sheaths which are worn openly suspended from
the waist of the wearer are not concealed within the meaning of this
section.

Also, for any state, here is this quick index:

i have a one handed trekker in my pocket at all times, it goes everywhere with me, off the asphalt i carry different blades or an axe depending on the activity. sometimes a sheath knife, but many times a strong folder i like my tops 747 . in the pocket of my hunting pants there is a couple of mylar blankets, a remington scout knife with saw, a whistle, gerber strikeforce, survivo match box with life boat matches, tea bags and sugar packets, cordage, heavy foil. my pack has a lot of other gear, water bottle, cup, chopper of some type, bag of trail mix and jerkey, sportsmans blanket water purification tabs.

I have a sheathed fixed blade on my belt every step of the way on ANY trail / hike / hunt adventure off the beaten path. Why would I care what some sheep-assed yuppie thinks about the hardware hanging off my belt. It's a tool, and wholly appropriate for wilderness trekking. The places I go to "get away", I rarely run across anybody else anyway, and in instances where I have, the exchanges have been brief, cordial, and then everybody just goes about their business. The knife has never even been mentioned.

What's the point of having one if you consciously leave it behind because you're worried about coming off as a "Rambo wannabe". Let people think what they want. It can't help YOU if you don't have it close at hand.

Sorry for the rant.....JMHO.

Amen. I would feel pretty stupid to find myself in a mess somewhere with a perfectly good tool sitting at home. How many stories have you read where people took off on a day hike and didn't have a compass, map, knife, firestarter, water, or water treatment? I prefer to avoid having my name become a verb or adjective :)

RR,
I think you are talking about a big knife, but I have my survival knife on my person except when I am sleeping and then it is on the bedside table with a surefire and springfield. I just got home from work and it was casual clothes friday so I have on a pair of khaki pants a corduroy shirt with a leatherman wave on my belt and a queen mountain man in my pocket. Those two might not be what I would specifically choose if I was going to get dropped off in BFE but if it happend, I think I could get by with them. Chris

I always have a sak on a lanyard or in my pocket, and somthing bigger if im planing on a trek in the woods.

Since my favorite "survival" knives are all 5" or under in the blade length department, the only thing smaller I carry would be various EDC folders.

Since my fixed bladed knives are already "smaller," I wouldn't want to go with anything "tiny."

A mid-size knife merely requires that your wits be sharper for tackling those "big knife jobs." I have never seriously needed a 7+" knife in the field, though I do have a few for convenience and fun.

On a casual jaunt into the woods, my minimum knife is a BRKT Gameskeeper in a homemade leather cross draw sheath. Many people never even see it until I get it out.

Because of the way the laws are in Alabama, I keep my survival knife in my haversack. I keep my pistol on my belt, and it's too cumbersome to have both on there!

If we're even on a half hour hike in the woods, my survival knife and kit are always on my hip and openly displayed. Keeps me legal, keeps us prepared. The opinion of sheeple means nothing to me.

Whatever knife is on me is my survival knife by definition. That big knife doesn't make a good survival knife in the back of my truck.

Well, I carry a Becker BK1 for hiking and Jungle bashing trips. And of course my trusty Wenger for those small handi works.

For my BK9/Leatherman combo I made a 3 position detachable back rig for it and attached a few pouches and what not for the things i couldn't fit in the sheath itself. Altogether it seems to make a nice little set up that can be carried with ease without it catching on brush or pulling on my waistline. I plan to make a similar design for my BK1. I put a more detailed description in the Camillus forum for those interested in making one themselves. I plan to post some pics soon as well. Cheers.

When in the woods, I carry my fixed blade strapped to my inner calf. That way you cant see it but its there if i need it.
