Carrying your survival knife

Every day, no matter what the dress, I'm carrying a SOGS62 multi-tool on my belt and a BM975S inside the waistband.

Much of the time, I'm carrying the RAT-3 on my belt too.

If I'm going out in the desert or up in the mountains, I'll be carrying either the RAT-3 or a BM Nimravus.

If I have my pack, I'll be carrying either the RAT-3 or a BM Nimravus AND a Frost Grizzly Skinner in the pack.

Well, My ''survival" knife would be my Buck 192, I allways have that on my belt while in the woods, And now i'll have a Fiskars saw that has a little belt clip beside it too. Now I won't feel so bad about not taking the axe ;)

i always have my grohmann #4 on my belt in the woods and my vic spirit (in my pack if its my big bag ) on the belt if its a dayhike

I like my #4 as wall, but I allways had trouble with its grind, it was a little thick.

I'm trading my #4 to normark for a couple of sheaths maybe :D
We shall see what happens.
Anyone carry strapped to the thigh? I always liked it so the handle was right at my hand, though it does look a bit "tactical" it just feels comfier. However I have been wearing a radio on my hip for three years and I havent had a knife on my hip in that time, so maybe its a more natural motion for me now.

I set up my seal pup based survival kit to be worn on the thigh using the straps from a dive knife, it seems to ride a little to high at the waist and is diffi cult to draw, on the thigh even if I'm crouching or sitting I can draw the knife and if I'm wearing my heavy pack w/ a waist strap the knife wont get in the way

I carry on my thigh as well. It's by far the most convenient option when you've got a pack on. It might look a little 'off' if you are in the city or something, but luckily looks aren't too important in the hills.

where you carry a knife,. always is up to the given situation at the time.

If you are just on a nice little hike in wods you know, then stuck in a backpack is fine.

If you are in a woods that you dont know, then getting the knife in a position where you can reach it faster is called for.

and if you are really dumped into a nasty place , then you better get that knife very handy.

This is why a good knife comes with a sheath thats easy to work.
a good sheath should allow you to wear it on the belt all the time. So that if you need it handy, it's no big deal to have it out and handy.

And if you dont need it all that handy, then a good sheath should pack well and not get lost too easy too.

I always have a multitool (usually a Vic Spirit) at hand. If I go into the woods or I'm camping, I also have a fixed blade (Becker Crewman) on my belt or lashed to my pack.

I have recently ordered a BRKT Mini Canadian, which I plan to carry in a pocket sheath so that I can edc an inconspicuous and benign looking fixed blade.

Legal ? We are talking about hiking and camping here folks.
Are you speaking of a crowded park like Yosemite or the woods where few go ?
Nobody is going to give a rats ass about a concealed knife if you are hiking unless you are acting like an idiot. (when is the last time you have been stopped and searched while hiking... )
I have never once gotten stares from people when I'm camping for carrying a sheath knife and I live in PCfornia. It is all in your demeanor IMO.
Are you all decked out in urban camo and sneering at people or do you like a regular joe whose out to enjoy nature , nobody is going to care about your knife unless you are in a big city or bringing attention to it and yourself.

I carry on my right of my belt a Chris Reeves shadow III next to a small pouch
with a small psk in it in my right front pocket i carry a leatherman lock back
knife.

I'm just adding this to all my threads, but I wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the help they've provided so far... I know I ask a lot of crazy questions but I think it is wonderfull to belong to such a friendly community where I can talk about these things without people suggesting therapy.

Yeah, you need "more knife therapy". My wife said "Another knife? Didn't you just get one last month?" I said "Oh, that one last month? I found that one" ...........(on the internet)

The one for Christmas (that she didn;t know was coming) she said "Where'd you get that knife?" I said "They sent it to me. They wanted me to have it" She said "Oh, they felt guilty about charging our Mastercard so they sent you a knife to kind of make up for it?" I said "Yeah. They sure are nice"

This is therapy. My wife has her own therapy, and it aint cheap! I'm just evening the odds :D

When hiking I usually have a small folder in my pocket.
A fixed blade on my belt usually about 4 inch in length
In either my fanny pack or backpack depending on which I have I will usually have a multi tool (though sometimes this is on my hip oposit the fixed blade)
I may have a larger fixed blade as well in the pack.
My theory is if crossing a steam or such and I fall and lose the pack at least I will still have the small fixed blade and possibly the folder as well

Sounds about right.

Backpacking, the waistbelt precludes the typical carry of a sheath knife. I have a lockblade in my pocket and the other tools in my pack.

Knocking around the city/suburbs/xurbs, I have a Lockback (and flashlight, Bic, and whistle) in a small case on my belt and a SAK in my pocket.

For day hikes, I carry a folder in my pocket and a fixed-blade and other PSK stuff in a day pack or fanny pack.

I have never noticed abyone taking notice -- except a gent who asked if I had done SAR work due to the lanyard on my Queen Mountainman.

For my BK9/Leatherman combo I made a 3 position detachable back rig for it and attached a few pouches and what not for the things i couldn't fit in the sheath itself. Altogether it seems to make a nice little set up that can be carried with ease without it catching on brush or pulling on my waistline. I plan to make a similar design for my BK1. I put a more detailed description in the Camillus forum for those interested in making one themselves. I plan to post some pics soon as well. Cheers.
