looks good. I remember how daunting it was to face making guards instead of bolsters. it is really a good feeling after, though.
if I can, you surely can. Here is the best info I can give. Don't forget that you can close the slot for the guard up a lot by squishing it in a press or whacking it with a hammer (especially if you make it a little elliptical so the area you want to squish sticks out farther than the rest). For smaller gaps, make a flat punch, and lightly tap along the area to be closed. just keep doing that until all of the gaps are closed, then polish the face of the guard. You may have to go back and forth a few times, especially at first. But, this technique, combined with using the tang as a swage to stretch the guard open, gives almost complete control of the size and shape of the slot.
Patience is the hardest part. Especially at first.
