Case Mini Trapper with Bottle Opener / Screwdriver ("Beer Trap"!!!)

From those pics, it looks like the screwdriver blade was tumble-polished. Probably not a good idea for a screwdriver edge to be rounded, even a little.

I personally have no interest in those knives but it's nice that Case is still innovating beyond just handle materials.

Looks like a nice knife and at half the price of a GEC 15 will be a bargain. This kind of competition is good for knife buyers.

I'm definitely in for an Amber bone. I'll probably throw it into a mixture of coffee and hibiscus tea to try to get a deep brown/red bone.

They may look a bit odd to some folks; but for me the minitrapper handle shape pleasingly fits in my hand like few other knives. That makes it an interesting choice to use for this blade combination. I'm not much one for bottle openers on knives, but I might have to make an exception for this one.

I owned a Case Mini-Trapper in pocket worn red bone from the late 90s that was an outstanding knife in terms of fit & finish. I really liked the size of the knife, but I just don't like the blade combination on trappers. My oldest son liked it so I ended up gifting it to him. I could actually see me carrying the new amber jigged bone one. Looking at the pics, I'd probably have to square the edges on the screwdriver though.

I know cap lifters are quite popular but they just don't do it for me...

Caplifter? What caplifter? I see a screwdriver/tool for light prying. ;)

I had the same reaction. :thumbdn:

The only Mini Trapper I had I gave to my Grandpa when he lost his Peanut.
I've been thinking of picking up a new one, however it would probably have to be in CV and these are all stainless (wasn't that also a complaint about the original Beer Scouts not being stainless)?

The edges of the Victorinox screwdrivers are also rounded so I'm pretty used to it. If necessary, I just square them up after I finish sharpening the blade. But it's not always necessary. We'll see.

Case might be watching GEC, especially after GEC reproduced knives they've made in collaboration with Tony Bose... and in quantities close to their own limited production. Trestle Pines/Queen recently made a barlow with a caplifter and that seems to be a more clear response to the demand for GEC barlows and caplifters. Case's pattern is distinct from GEC's beer scout in many ways. The handle is completely different than the straight jack handle used by GEC and Trestle Pines/Queen. The straight jacks from GEC are more close to the old knives made a long time ago. The "beer trap" ;) from Case is a bit more unique... slightly resembling an old pattern from Case history.

Case's steel has been talked about elsewhere. Frank did a nice comparison of the performance of Cases SS and CV. They're pretty close. I'd still like stainless steel "beer scouts" and "radio knives" from GEC. Options are good. There is some benefit to rust resistance on a knife that's intended to open beer.

I only saw SS. SS seems like an appropriate choice for this pattern (bottle opener) but I don't know if they will use CV in the future. I used to have a preference for Case's CV over their SS but I don't see much difference between the two now. Performance is pretty close. Those who like color changes may be disappointed but they could always buy a mood ring instead of a knife. ;) :p :D I do prefer 1095 and 440C but SS and CV have reasonable performance. And the relatively low cost of these knives is a plus.

Perhaps if you like Belgian monastery beers you could call this knife "trappist" :D

Most of the Belgian beers I buy are in corked 750 ml bottles. My Radio knife in ebony gets used for American craft beers. It's very handy. I've learned to live with the steel liners corroding. Nickel silver would have been my preference. i think this Case knife might be better for me in the summer months.

I'd love to see one of these in chestnut jigged bone. I like the handle profile of the mini trapper quite a bit.

There's already a beverage thread. Please keep this one focused on the new Case knife.

I'm definitely on the other side of the fence to the "not much use for a bottle opener on a knife " crowd.:)
I find them far more useful than any flathead screwdriver on a knife. Except for the most dire emergency I would rather use a proper screwdriver which is designed for the screw.
All that twisting and turning can't be good for the knife.

I use the screwdrivers on my Victorinox knives quite a bit... not really conservatively either... and they seem to be holding up pretty good. They have a rivet construction though. I'm much more careful about applying torque when using the screwdrivers or punches on knives that have peened pin construction. But a screwdriver on a knife will never replace my Snapon Ratcheting screwdriver.
