Case Yellow Handles - Yea or Nay

Well, I followed this thread very exactelly.

For me - yellow handles: Yea (oh course)

I like the look and how the Delrin feels in hand. Ok, the prize range is one thought, but the material feels so smooth, somehow like silk in the hand and it doesn´t loose that feel even when there are may scratches in them and the whole knife is already worn out. IMO it feel much better than any of these new high-end-synthetic materials. Those are really cold in hand, but Delrin moves to a nice, warm touch. Like wood, somehow. It doesn´t feel like wood, but it has the same warmth in it.

The yellow make the knives a little unique, especially here in Germany, maybe whole Europe. Workman´s knives here are wood handled knives or the red handles of the SAKs. But the yellow handles are not well known on this side of the world. So something special ;)

Kind regards
Andi

Yeah, that is also a good reason, and a good one, explaining the 'special' unique look for those on the other side of the world, as Andi put it. Very different from what you get in Europe. That special unique feature could also be another reason for my instant love towards the little yellow serpentine friend, and may be what caught my eye when i first opened the box and saw it. I had to put it in my pocket.
But those old time yellers seem to be special in the US too, and are getting lots of attention. That yellow handle and carbon steel pair, must be something magic :D

Yellow's the only plastic color I like. There's something classic about yellow and carbon steel with a dark grey patina. Looks great together! If the steel were stainless (I wouldn't buy the knife), but if I did I'd prefer the black delrin.

I like it. Absolutely authentic and Old School too.

Tough, smooth and slim in the hand and, sort of welcoming/reassuring.

This is what I've always perceived, with a yeller-handled knife in hand. There's something very comfortable, warm and 'right' about it.

A lot of that perception is likely built on nostalgia for me. I think the knife that made the biggest impression on me, when growing up, was my Dad's yellow-handled fishing knife. Not a Case, but just another inexpensive Japanese brand. My dad used it to clean almost every fish we brought home, over the span of a couple of decades. Many great memories were attached to it. :)

Only have one - a Case Sodbuster Jr.

The "yellow" is certainly nostalgic, but the looks seem to me ho-hum compared to bone or wood.

I hate yellow. It makes me think of urine, jaundice, stains, cowardice etc. Next to pink it's my least favorite color. If a knife I wanted was only available in yellow, I wouldn't buy it.

wow ya must really despise the color. although i'm with ya on pink...
gene

heres mine, my edc medium yeller, my beloved soddie and a trapper i gifted to a good friend last year that had lost his father, he loves trappers, weird because i dont like 'em, so it lives in California now:D

It's traditional, but I prefer bone or wood scales on my slipjoints. I like the look and grip of jigged bone or stag better than the yellow delrin on about any knife. I do have a yellow CV trapper from Case, but I'm not likely to buy any other "yeller"-handled knives.

I used to not care for "yeller" handles at all, but I picked up a Camillus 23 with cream colored scales, an advertising knife with the ORR FELT COMPANY logo on the handles. Great knife, and while I've even thought of dyeing the handles (don't worry, I won't, I don't even know if I can), I have carried it off and on over the past year. Lots of members here seem to like them. I didn't like the peanut model at first, for example, but after I saw Carl's, I picked one up. Now I have three. One amber bone SS I just got in a trade, a brown delrin SS model and a year old heavily patina'd CV chestnut jack model.

You might find you like it after a while.

I very recently acquired my 1st yellow peanut, I have tried to get only bone or stag or MOP scales trying to avoid synthetic scales. I have one micarta handled peanut and two very old black handled ones from the WW 2 era when sacrifices had to be made to support the war efforts. The marigold scales are a nice even color unlike some other colors in the spectrum of colors, shades and tints offered by Case.

nay for me too but maybe not as strong as Stelth though :D

wish I could get a back soddie is CV....

Give me any of type natural scales rather than synthetic any day.. That said, having a synthetic derlin yella handled knife won't prevent me from using the hell out of her CV steel and that's for sure.

I can't say that I love it, but it is not terrible and it is a reminder of the old days. And I will tell you, all you have to do is to drop a knife on the ground or on a road---just once--and have to go back and look for it. You will become a big fan of yellow handles right there.

Yellow is the classic working mans knife. Someone who wants a case but don't want to pay an extra thirty or forty dollars for bone or stag bc these knives is going to b used hard. I believe if case didn't offer the yellow handle they would b hurting. How many guys y'all know that owns or carried a yeller handled case trapper? Everybody I know owns or carries one. Most of them is self proclaimed millionaires that works hard every day and still carries one bc paying extra for the same knife just because of the handles is a waste of money to them.

And the bonus to that is that the delrin is not only a cheaper handle product but at the same time it is a lot more durable than the more expensive bone or stag.

Uh oh, it's looking like this thread might cost me...

Here are my yellows so far:

Case yellows are stainless. I rubbed down the blades with 600 grit for more of a satin finish. I like it.

The German Eye has a great yellow custard color but the retailer pawned a bad one off on me [blade rub so bad, the main is displaced when closed] so I put it away until now.

The GECs are "Yellow Rose" bone.

Yellow handle scales are a kick. Plus, it helps me find them when I drop them in the woo- well, I guess I'm in the city far more than the woods ;) It helps me find them when I'm in the city :thumbup:

EDIT to add: yea.

Yea!

Most of my early Case purchases were yeller handle knives. I do prefer natural handle materials, especially on expensive knives, but a Case with yeller covers is usually very affordable. The yeller covers are easy to spot if you drop the knife and they cut just as well as the identical knife with a more expensive handle material. It also has a nice feel to it. If you just need a knife to cut stuff, there's little reason to pay for handle material. They don't look like pocket jewelry, but I personally think the yeller looks pretty good. That said, if there is no price difference, I'd go for jigged bone... but I wouldn't want to give up all my yeller Case knives.

Wow!! How long did it take you to find all those words in the Thesaurus????? Cowardice huh????? Lots of people like yeller handles here. What about that old dog "Yeller"??? Maybe he ought to have his yeller butt kicked to the curb.

Maybe this will change your mind. Typical Case CV yellow delrin covered 4 1/8" Trapper.

Oh heck!! I'm was too curt and short. I could only picture "Old Yeller" sitting by the curb sopping wet in the rain with no family or home to go to and nothing to eat and my mind snapped. I hope this doesn't mean that our engagement is off.

Just keep looking at the pictured trapper and maybe you'll change your mind.
